The effect of addition of KOH on laminar burning velocity, peak mole fraction for H and OH, the rate of fuel and oxidizer decay, the rate of production of product species, and the rate of temperature rise has been studied. Computations have been performed for both fuel rich and fuel lean flames. The effect of uncertainties in the data base for rate constants used in the computations has been investigated. Two simplified reaction mechanisms are presented. Comparison of results with experimental data is presented. Book excerpt: Currently, very little data exists detailing the chemical mechanisms associated with the addition of suppressants such as Potassium sulfate or Potassium nitrate and their impact on the production of ions in either typical laboratory flames or solid propellant exhaust flows. On an empirical basis, potassium-bearing salts (Potassium sulfate, Potassium nitrate, Potassium chloride, etc.) have been found to be among the most general and most effective suppressants. The addition of such alkali metal salts to the plume gases, However, has been observed to increase ion/electron concentrations, which in turn may significantly affect the radar cross section and reduce the motor's performance (e.g., by producing a lower specific impulse). This report summarizes the results of a recent analytical investigation into the influence of the addition of potassium salts on both the inhibition effects and the production electrons in a Hydrogen/Air flame.

Book excerpt: Rate constants have been determined for gas phase reactions of alkali species which are relevant to flame suppression chemistry by sodium and potassium compounds. Sources and detection methods for gas phase molecular alkali species kO, kO2, Na, NaO2 and NaOH have been developed and applied to kinetic studies of these species using a high temperature fast flow reactor. Rate constants for the recombination reactions of alkali atoms with molecular oxygen, K + O2 + M yields KO2 + M and Na + O2 + M yields NaO2 + M, have been measured as a function of temperature from 300 to 700 K. Laser induced fluorescence is used to monitor the disappearance of Na or K as a function of O2 and M. The reactions of NaOH, NaO2 and NaO with HCl at 300 K are found to proceed at their gas kinetic limits to form NaCl. Other reactions studied include: NaOH + H yield Na + H2O, NaCl + H yields Na + HCl and both Na and K with H2O2. KOH has been detected in the gas phase by infrared absorption at 424/ cm using a tunable diode laser. This method has wide applicability for direct detection of a number of molecular alkali species for laboratory kinetic studies and for in situ combustion flame diagnostics. Theoretical sensitivity estimates are calculated for KOH, KO2, KO, NaOH, NaO2, NaO and NaCl for both high temperature, atmospheric pressure and low pressure flow tube conditions.

In addition, we have not considered other fossil-fuel combustion problems associated with oil shale, tar sands, etc., even though many aspects of pulverized-coal combustion would relate to these problems. For the case of pulverized-coal models, we have attempted to provide a detailed description of the model foundations. Parts I and II of this book emphasize general principles for describing reacting, turbulent or laminar, multiphase systems. General conservation equations are developed and summarized. The basis for computing thermochemical equilibrium in complex, heterogeneous mixtures is presented, together with techniques for rapid computation and reference to required input data. Rate processes are then discussed, including pertinent aspects of turbulence, chemical kinetics, radiative heat transfer, and gas-particle convective-diffusive interactions. Much of Part II deals with parameters and coefficients for describing these complex rate processes. This part of the book provides recommended values of coefficients and parameters for treating complex reacting flows. Parts I and II may well be suitable for use in an advanced course in reacting flows, and have been written partly with that in mind. Part III deals with more specific aspects of pulverized-coal characteristics and rate processes. Following a general description of coal structure and constitution, coal pyrolysis and char oxidation processes are considered.
