Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This informative study helps to complete the saga of the Choctaw by documenting the life and culture of those who escaped removal. It is an account that until now has been left largely untold. The Choctaw Indians, once one of the largest and most advanced tribes in North America, have mainly been studied as the first victims of removal during the Jacksonian era. After signing the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830, the great mass of the tribe—about 20,000 of perhaps 25,000—was resettled in what is present-day Oklahoma. What became of the thousands that remained? The history of the Choctaw remaining in Mississippi has been given only scant attention by scholars, and generally it has been forgotten by the public. As this new book points out, several thousand remained on individual land allotments or as itinerant farm workers and continued to follow old customs. Many of mixed blood abandoned their ancestral ways and were merged into the white community. Some faded into the wilderness. Despite many obstacles, the remnants of this Mississippi Choctaw society endured and in the modern era through federal legislation have been recognized as a society known as the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

Book excerpt: Overstory removal cutting, the most common means of converting old-growth stands to younggrowth stands in California, can produce excessive residues that pose management problems. Utilization is an attractive option for managing residues. However, the cost of residue retrieval and utilization is often prohibitive. Residue retrieval by a private contractor was studied to determine production rates and effectiveness after overstory removal on three blocks in true fir stands in northeastern California. Residues were inventoried before and after residue retrieval to determine the amount removed. The contractor removed 97 percent of the residue specified for retrieval and 68 percent of residue smaller than specifications, for a total of 136 dry tons (123 t). Residues down to about 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter were utilized for fuelwood. Production rates -- 0.53 ton (0.48 t) per man-hour and 0.67 ton (0.61 t) per equipment-hour -- were low (costs high) for several reasons, including the small size of residues and restricted yarding patterns. Damage to the residual stand was negligible.

Book excerpt: Advance regeneration is common under decadent, old-growth stands of California red fir (Abies magnifica A. Murr.). Intense competition for the site's resources can create sapling stands of poor vigor and advanced age. When competition is reduced by overstory removal and thinning, suppressed advance regeneration has been shown to respond with increased growth. But, to select leave trees, land managers need to know which tree characteristics we associated with growth after release and thinning. This paper reports those easily measured tree characteristics found to be most closely associated with growth after 8 years, on the Swain Mountain Experimental Forest in northeastern California.

Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanisms that underlie brain activity and function remains one of the major frontiers of biology. All the processes of how we co-ordinate our movements, sense our surroundings, react to stimuli and learn and retain information rely on complicated networks of neurons thatcommunicate with each other and their targets. This fast and accurate intercellular signalling most occurs at synapses, specialized processes of neurons that release chemical signals, called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters: Frontiers in Molecular Biology will provide the reader withextensive background information on neurotransmitter release. It takes a multidisciplinary approach, but does not assume previous knowledge having basic introductions to most topics. Topics however are covered in enough detail to be of interest to experts in the field. Throughout, emphasis is placedon the rationale by which proteins are assigned specific functions rather than just providing facts about function. The first chapter provides an introduction to the basic features and properties of the synapse and is followed by a chapter detailing several important techniques used to elucidatevarious aspects of release. Chapters 3 describes many of the biochemical approaches used to identify proteins involved in neurotransmitter release and then chapters 4 and 5 focus on more specific aspects of synaptic transmission: the proteins that transport neurotransmitters and the role ofphosphlipids in the process. The next five chapters concentrate on approaches to unravel the function of many proteins in vivo by using toxins, giant squid axons, C. elegans, Drosophila, and mice. The final chapter summarizes current knowledge on endocytosis and recycling. Knowledge of themolecular mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter release has expanded tremendously over the last 10 years. Many of the proteins involved have been isolated, but their roles have yet to be determined. These discoveries will be a major challenge and it is therefore the major aim of this book not onlyto provide information but also to generate excitement.

Book excerpt: With about 10–20% of the adult population in Europe being tattooed, there is a strong demand for publications discussing the various issues related to tattooed skin and health. Until now, only a few scientific studies on tattooing have been published. This book discusses different aspects of the various medical risks associated with tattoos, such as allergic reactions from red tattoos, papulo-nodular reactions from black tattoos as well as technical and psycho-social complications, in addition to bacterial and viral infections. Further sections are dedicated to the composition of tattoo inks, and a case is made for the urgent introduction of national and international regulations. Distinguished authors, all specialists in their particular fields, have contributed to this publication which provides a comprehensive view of the health implications associated with tattooing. The book covers a broad range of topics that will be of interest to clinicians and nursing staff, toxicologists and regulators as well as laser surgeons who often face the challenge of having to remove tattoos, professional tattooists and producers of tattoo ink.

Book excerpt: Despite the rising popularity of the minimally invasive laparoscopic option, open nephron-sparing surgery is still seen by many experts as the 'gold standard' for open surgery for kidney tumors and should remain the first choice for many patients. This challenges the idea that less-invasive therapies are always more desirable than open surgery. Whi
