Book Synopsis The Amboseli Elephants by : Cynthia J. Moss
Download or read book The Amboseli Elephants written by Cynthia J. Moss and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elephants have fascinated humans for millennia. Aristotle wrote of them with awe; Hannibal used them in warfare; and John Donne called the elephant “Nature’s greatest masterpiece. . . . The only harmless great thing.” Their ivory has been sought after and treasured in most cultures, and they have delighted zoo and circus audiences worldwide for centuries. But it wasn’t until the second half of the twentieth century that people started to take an interest in elephants in the wild, and some of the most important studies of these intelligent giants have been conducted at Amboseli National Park in Kenya. The Amboseli Elephants is the long-awaited summation of what’s been learned from the Amboseli Elephant Research Project (AERP)—the longest continuously running elephant research project in the world. Cynthia J. Moss and Harvey Croze, the founders of the AERP, and Phyllis C. Lee, who has been closely involved with the project since 1982, compile more than three decades of uninterrupted study of over 2,500 individual elephants, from newborn calves to adult bulls to old matriarchs in their 60s. Chapters explore such topics as elephant ecosystems, genetics, communication, social behavior, and reproduction, as well as exciting new developments from the study of elephant minds and cognition. The book closes with a view to the future, making important arguments for the ethical treatment of elephants and suggestions to aid in their conservation. The most comprehensive account of elephants in their natural environment to date, The Amboseli Elephants will be an invaluable resource for scientists, conservationists, and anyone interested in the lives and loves of these extraordinary creatures.

Book Synopsis African Antelope Database 1998 by : Rod East
Download or read book African Antelope Database 1998 written by Rod East and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1999 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most antelope species still exist in large numbers in sub-Saharan Africa (some in hundreds of thousands), up to three-quarters of the species are in decline. Threats to their survival arise from the rapid growth of human and livestock populations, with consequent degradation and destruction of natural habitats, and excessive offtake by meat hunters. In addition, some parts of Africa are mow almost completely devoid of large wild animals because of uncontrolled slaughter during recent civil wars. This report presents the information currently held by the IUCN/SSC Antelope Specialist Group on the conservation status of each antelope species (and selected subspecies) in sub-Saharan Africa. Key areas have been identified for the conservation of representative antelope communities. While external donors make the greatest contributions to the conservation of antelopes, greater recognition of wildlife conservation in national and regional development plans is often a critically important requirement.

Download or read book Killing Game written by David J Harland and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994-09-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989 the international community banned the international trade in elephant ivory; three years later the ban was renewed. Dr. Harland believes the ivory ban is the most controversial--and most misunderstood--piece of international wildlife law ever made. His book, Killing Game, seeks to unravel some of the misunderstandings, and it attempts to determine if international law can be an effective tool for the conservation of wildlife and if international law has served the African elephant well. Part I is an extended investigation of how and why international law is used so badly by the conservation community, and how it could be used better. Here Dr. Harland focuses on the problem of which laws are complied with and which are not; in the process he shows the importance of factors of compliance in determining the degree to which laws will be followed. In Part II he examines the status of the African elephant in international law in light of these factors. This book will be of interest to those involved in formulating international law, as well as the conservation community in general.
