However, Saville (1993), states that, by filling these gaps, developing economies are able to achieve economic growth and development. The main objective of this research is to update the study of Saville (1993) in order to determine the impact of the multinational corporation on the host economy in reference to the drivers of exogenous and endogenous growth in contribution to filling these gaps. This is a quantitative study which makes use of secondary data obtained from JSE listed firms operating in the mining sector in South Africa. Statistical regression analysis was conducted and results are compared to the previous Saville (1993) study. In summary, the results of the study are mixed however in terms of informing government policy, this study confirms the importance of FDI in emerging markets. The caveat however, firstly, is to inform policy to attract the right kinds of FDI to contribute to filling specific gaps in to achieve the required economic growth. Secondly, policy should require collaboration between MNC's, private firms as well as public sector firms in order to share knowledge and profits in having a positive effect on social welfare and economic growth in the domestic economy.
Book Synopsis African Businesses and EconomicGrowth by : Imani Silver Kyaruzi
Download or read book African Businesses and EconomicGrowth written by Imani Silver Kyaruzi and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can institutions stimulate African local economic growth? After decades of poor economic growth, foreign aid-dependency, poor government policies and bureaucratic leadership by Africans in the 21st century, focus has increasingly shifted to the continent's business systems, entrepreneurship and governance. Also, the improving trade relations between Africa and the rest of the world has brought a renewed interest on the region's relatively slow economic growth. African Businesses and Economic Growth: Institutions, Firms, Practices and Policy examines policy approaches to economic liberalization and the effects of global forces and, in particular, how Africa can respond to globalization pressures in order to assume its rightful place in the global economy. Contributors to the volume, including researchers from East and West Africa, have examined the role of African institutions and firms, and the ways they impact on local economic growth. In particular, they analyse how African firms generate, share and transfer knowledge, the role of human capital on productivity, the role and impact of informal institutions on private sector and institutional development, firms` responses to laws and rules set by policymakers (the rules of the game) and the effect these laws and rules have on firms` development and strategies. The book also examines the role of non-governmental institutions, multinational firms, bilateral and multilateral institutions and how their activities and policies influence the structure and strategies of local firms and economic growth. Most of the contributors conclude that a full scale economic growth, liberalization and institutionalization across the African economies, though inevitable, are unlikely to be achieved overnight.
Book Synopsis Growth, Equity, And Self-reliance by : Ampah G. Johnson
Download or read book Growth, Equity, And Self-reliance written by Ampah G. Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores what is, for many African countries, a new and controversial policy of relying on private actors rather than on government organizations to foster economic growth and development. The contributors explore key issues such as the impact of private enterprise on the development process, small- and medium-sized businesses as a vehicle for growth, and strategies for the expansion of markets and trade. The contributors analyze the historical, social, cultural, and economic obstacles to the development of private enterprise in Africa; the roles of government, women, and business organizations; access to capital and the function of financial institutions; private initiative and agriculture; the use of skilled and semi-skilled labor; and technology transfer. Arguing that private sector forces are crucial to African socioeconomic development, the contributors recommend economic policy reform, establishment of more private enterprises, and encouragement of new domestic and foreign investment.

Download or read book Multinational Interest & Development in Africa written by Ilan Bijaoui and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the current economic situations in African countries at the local, regional, and national level. It examines the growing interest from developed and developing countries to invest in Africa and their different reasons for doing so, which aren’t always aligned with the interests of African countries. Growth in African GDP has benefitted mainly multinational corporations while the rest of the population remains at the subsistence level, creating a smaller middle class and less opportunity for local businesses to flourish. This book offers potential models of cooperation which could create added value for both African countries and the MNCs investing in them.

Book Synopsis Multinational Enterprises, Foreign Direct Investment and Growth in Africa by : Bernard Michael Gilroy

This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Africa, the world’s most lagging region, benefit from globalisation and achieve sustained economic growth? Africa needs greater investment by Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) to improve competitiveness and generate more growth through positive spill-over effects. Despite the fact that Africa’s returns on investment averaged 29% since 1990, Africa has gained merely 1% of global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows. The challenge for African countries is how to be a more desirable destination for FDI. The study integrates three currents of economic research, namely from the literature on (endogenous) economic growth, convergence and regional integration, the explanations for Africa’s poor growth and the growing understanding of the role of MNEs in a global economy. The empirical side of the book is based on an econometric study of the determinants of FDI in Africa as well as a detailed firm-level survey conducted in 2000.
