Book excerpt: "Asked why he decided to collect African art, Paul Tishman replied, "How does one fall in love?" Such was the passion Paul and Ruth Tishman brought to collecting. The Tishmans acquired their first works of African art - an ivory figure and a bronze mask from the Benin kingdom - in the late 1950s. Over the next 20 plus years, the Tishmans built one of the great private collections of African art that included the major art traditions found throughout the continent. The Tishmans' desire to share the art with as many people as possible led to the 1984 sale of the collection to the Walt Disney Company, who proved to be generous stewards, making the collection available for exhibition and publication. In the autumn of 2005, the Walt Disney World Co., a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company, donated the Walt Disney-Tishman African Art Collection to the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, continuing the tradition of sharing the rich history of African art and culture with current and future generations." --

Book Synopsis Art of the Senses by : Christraud M. Geary
Download or read book Art of the Senses written by Christraud M. Geary and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the "unique" look of African art captured the imagination of artists such as Picasso and Stieglitz is well known. But how do art aficionados today see African objects? And how does our view compare to the way in which these objects were seen in Africa? Presenting the William and Bertha Teel Collection for the first time, this book provides a chance to think about how our vision of such objects is shaped by the "ethnographic," "primitive," or "modern" labels that have been applied in the West, and to compare it to how those same works were viewed in their birthplace. Lavish, full-color illustrations of over 100 choice objects combine forces with essays by leading African art specialists Suzanne Preston Blier, Michael Kan, and Edmund B. Gaither, and object descriptions by the collector himself, to provide a thoughtful and visually stimulating examination of these important African forms--as well as of the dynamic relationship among their creators, their original cultural contexts, and the Western viewing public.

Book Synopsis A History of Art in Africa by : Monica Blackmun Visonà
Download or read book A History of Art in Africa written by Monica Blackmun Visonà and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2008 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Informed by the latest scholarship yet written for the general reader, this has been the first comprehensive study to present the arts of Africa in art historical terms. A History of Art in Africa covers all parts of the continent, including Egypt, from prehistory to the present day and includes the art of the African Diaspora. Many aspects of visual culture are given detailed consideration, including sculpture, architecture, and such quintessentially African forms as masquerades, festivals, and personal adornment. The arts of daily life, of royal ceremony, and of state cosmology receive compelling discussions. Throughout, the authors emphasize the cultural contexts in which art is produced and imbued with meanings." "Among the ancient works illustrated are masterpieces in brass, gold, ivory, stone and terracotta. Religious arts serving Islamic and Christian communities are presented, as are fascinating hybrid arts that periodically arose from African interactions with Europe, Asia and the Americas. Twentieth-century arts are explored as part of the vibrancy of modern Africa and as ingenious responses to historical change. 'Twenty-first-century African artists, and artists of the African Diaspora, are presented in the context of changing global economies and new theoretical positions." "This expanded and revised second edition provides a new chapter on African artists working abroad, and five new short essays on cross-cultural topics such as tourist arts, dating methods, and the illicit trade in archaeological artifacts. The illustrations - featuring a vast and rich array of images of artworks, archival and contemporary field photographs, explanatory drawings and plans, and individual objects displayed in museums and in use - have likewise been greatly extended, with many more pictures now shown in color."--BOOK JACKET.
