Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of Black racial identity attitudes, as measured by the Cross Racial Identity Scale (CRIS), and masculine norms, as measured by the Conformity to Masculinity Norms Index -46 (CMNI-46), in relation to men's academic helpseeking behavior. Participants were 120 African American undergraduate males at a historically White university in the Midwest region of the United States. Four hypotheses were designed to help guide the measure's influences on two academic help-seeking variables, avoidance and perceived benefits. The first and second hypotheses both focused on the effects of Black college men's racial attitudes. The third and fourth hypotheses focused on the effects of Black men's conformity on masculine norms. Participants were asked to complete an online survey, which contained a demographic sheet and measures of Black racial identity, traditional masculinity norms, and academic help-seeking behavior. Hierarchical multiple regressions were used to execute the primary analyses. African American male college students who endorsed higher levels of an Afrocentric racial attitude reported higher levels of perceived benefits for academic help-seeking. The study’s finding of hypothesis 3 suggested that African American men who conform to higher levels of self-reliance and power over women masculine norms endorsed higher levels of helpseeking avoidance behavior. The findings also showed that conforming to a higher level of work primacy norm negatively impacted academic help-seeking avoidance. Finally, Black college men with a higher degree of work primacy, and a lower degree of self-reliance predicted higher levels in perceived benefits academic help-seeking. Limitations of the study and implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Cultural mistrust and fear of potential racism from people in the medical profession may be contributing to a noted disdain for mental health counseling among African American men. The purpose of this study was designed to gain insight into how attitudes toward religious help-seeking, acceptance of change, cultural mistrust, and mental health stigma impact therapy utilization among African American male college students. The review of literature explored the theoretical frameworks followed by the historical perspective, epigenetics, family structure, masculinity concept and help-seeking behaviors, noting barriers, fear, stigmas, spiritual influence, and economic hardships. Acceptance of change-evolving action is not currently endorsed by male African American college students. This appears to be due to attitudes, cultural competence, mistrust, risks, and misunderstanding of potential benefits to therapy utilization. The information examined in the literature review provided a foundational framework for understanding the impact of barriers on African American male college students regarding utilization of therapy. Although there have been awareness efforts, prompted by the federal government and the counseling community, the problem of underutilization continues. A quantitative correlational study was conducted to explore if religious help seeking, acceptance of change, cultural mistrust and mental health stigma have a connection to decreased therapy utilization. The study significance focuses on minimizing barriers to therapy utilization while increasing understanding concerning the benefits of its use. The significance of the study is designed to influence health care outcomes and disparities. The methods and procedures used in this research are presented in eight sections: (a) overview, (b) design, (c) research questions, (d) hypotheses, (e) participants, (f) instrument, (g) data collection, and (h) summary.

This volume has a special section on Islam and Mental Health, an important and neglected area of study. The section draws on work, from six countries, that have applied different theoretical frameworks and empirical methods to examine the link between religion, psychology, and health in very diverse Muslim communities. Other articles examine topics as diverse as spirituality, psychological health, conversion, and the cultural psychology of religion. Disciplines represented include those that draw on qualitative, quantitative, and theoretical methods of study which together represent an important contribution to the contemporary study of religion.

Book excerpt: The current study investigated the role of masculinity, mental health stigma, religious coping, and cultural mistrust in accounting for attitudes toward help-seeking in African American men. While masculinity and mental health stigma are known to predict attitudes toward help-seeking, it was expected that religious coping and cultural mistrust might also be significant predictors in a sample of African American men. Participants from the study consisted of 133 African American men. The majority of participants were from one predominantly White university in the midsouthern part of the United States and one historically Black university in the southeastern part of the United States. A regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The hypothesis that masculinity and mental health stigma would account for a significant unique proportion of the variance in attitudes toward psychological help-seeking was confirmed. The hypothesis that religious coping and cultural mistrust would be significant predictors of help-seeking attitudes was not supported by the current study. The results add to the literature by supporting the importance of the masculinity and stigma constructs in a sample of African American men and suggesting that cultural mistrust may not be as important in explaining the underutilization of mental health services by African American men as previously suggested. Clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined cultural mistrust, racial identity and masculinity as influences on the attitudes of African American males toward psychotherapy. The sample consisted of 101 African American male undergraduate and graduate students. Participants completed the Cultural Mistrust Inventory (CMI), Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (RIAS-B), Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) Gender Role Conflict Scale (GCRS) and Attitudes toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPH). Pearson r correlations indicated a significant relationship between racial identity and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.314), but no significant correlation between cultural mistrust and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.184), nor between masculinity and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.045, .010, -.225). A regression analysis, with cultural mistrust, racial identity and masculinity as predictor variables and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help as the criterion, indicated no significant predictors (R=.135, R2=.060). Limitations of this study, as well as implications and recommendations for future research and practice, are discussed.

Book excerpt: The disparity between the academic success of Black males and their White peers in the United States is robust. Research supports the disparity is not only the result of low financial status but also racial and gender barriers that affect how Black males navigate academic environments.Intervention programs to improve Black males' quality of life through mentorship and motivationenhancement have impacted the academic success of Black males greater than those that provide financial resources. Yet, these interventions do not target Black males in primarily white education settings where academic stressors are greater, racial and gender barriers more commonplace and ability to successfully cope with stress is crucial to academic success. Although research supports that the use of maladaptive coping strategies by Black males negatively impacts academic success, few intervention programs have focused on improving college stressor coping strategies. Thus, the proposed intervention utilizes the concept of metacognitive feedback, or the process of "thinking about how one thinks", to instruct black men on how to use help-seeking as an adaptive and problem focused coping strategy. The intervention supports cognitive and behavioral change by instructing black men to consider how negative attitudes, discouraging subjective norms and low perceptions of control affect coping strategy. After the semester-long course students in the intervention should report higher intentions to seek out professional counseling services. Significant results for this proposal could potentially increase Black males use of available college help services, enhance this populations overall well-being and be a primary factor contributing to greater academic success.

The study investigated the relationships between cultural mistrust as measured by the Cultural Mistrust Inventory (Terrell and Terrell, 1981), identity as measured by the African Self-Consciousness Scale (Baldwin and Bell, 1985), locus of control as measured by Rotter (1966), and help-seeking behaviors as measured by Fisher and Farina's (1995) Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Help.

Gender role conflict (GRC) doesn't just harm boys and men, but also girls and women, transgendered people, and society at large. Extensive research relates men's GRC to myriad behavioral problems, including sexism, violence, homophobia, depression, substance abuse, and relationship issues. This book represents a call to action for researchers and practitioners, graduate students, and other mental healthcare professionals to confront men's GRC and reduce its harmful influence on individuals and society. James O'Neil is a pioneer in men's psychology who conceptualized GRC and created the Gender Role Conflict Scale. In this book, he combines numerous studies from renowned scholars in men's psychology with more than 30 years of his own clinical and research experience to promote activism and challenge the status quo. He describes multiple effects of men's GRC, including success, power, and competition issues restricted emotionality restricted affectionate behavior between men conflicts between men's work and family relations. O'Neil also explains when GRC can develop in a man's gender role journey, how to address it through preventative programs and therapy for boys and men, and what initiatives researchers and clinicians can pursue.
