Book excerpt: Aesop's FablesBy George Fyler TownsendReverend George Fyler Townsend (1814-1900) was the translator of the standard English edition of Aesop's Fables.Although there are more modern collections and translations, Townsend's volume of 350 fables introduced the practice of stating a succinct moral at the conclusion of each story, and continues to be influential. Several editions were published in his lifetime, and others since. In 1860, Townsend also published a revised edition of The Arabian Nights. In 1872, Townsend published, under the auspices of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, a volume entitled 'The Sea Kings of the Mediterranean'. Download or read book How to Tell Stories to Children written by Sara Cone Bryant and published by Boston : Houghton Mifflin Company. This book was released on 1905 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories which are given in the following pages are for the most part those which I have found to be best liked by the children to whom I have told these and others. I have tried to reproduce the form in whihc I actually tell them--although that invariably varies with every repetition--feeling that it would be of greater value to another story-teller than a more closely literary form. My hope is that this book may be of use to those who have much to do with children. -- Preface.

Book excerpt: Comprised of over 300 classic animal tales, this edition of Aesop’s Fables will capture any young reader’s imagination. Aesop’s Fables have long been remembered as farcical, but resonant tales, capturing the imaginations of adults and children alike. Aesop’s Fables have been a cornerstone in narrating to children the differences between right and wrong. Including such revered tales as the Tortoise and the Hare, to lesser known but equally as insightful stories such as the Mountain and the Mouse, Aesop’s Fables have provided timeless guidance to young children through the guise of anthropomorphized animals. Using common animals in this manner has been a treasured vehicle for young readers to better understand and relate to the world around them. Aesop’s oral stories had been passed down through generations to celebrate the morality of life before being captured on the page. Other well-known fables in this collection include; The Goose Who Laid the Golden Eggs, The City Mouse, and The Kid and the Wolf. This translation was compiled by George Fyler Townsend. With eye-catching new covers and a new note about the author, this edition of Aesop's Fables is both modern and readable.

Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables by Aesop - Translated by George Fyler Townsend - THE TALE, the Parable, and the Fable are all common and popular modes of conveying instruction. Each is distinguished by its own special characteristics. The Tale consists simply in the narration of a story either founded on facts, or created solely by the imagination, and not necessarily associated with the teaching of any moral lesson. The Parable is the designed use of language purposely intended to convey a hidden and secret meaning other than that contained in the words themselves; and which may or may not bear a special reference to the hearer, or reader. The Fable partly agrees with, and partly differs from both of these. It will contain, like the Tale, a short but real narrative; it will seek, like the Parable, to convey a hidden meaning, and that not so much by the use of language, as by the skilful introduction of fictitious characters; and yet unlike to either Tale or Parable, it will ever keep in view, as its high prerogative, and inseparable attribute, the great purpose of instruction, and will necessarily seek to inculcate some moral maxim, social duty, or political truth. The true Fable, if it rise to its high requirements, ever aims at one great end and purpose representation of human motive, and the improvement of human conduct, and yet it so conceals its design under the disguise of fictitious characters, by clothing with speech the animals of the field, the birds of the air, the trees of the wood, or the beasts of the forest, that the reader shall receive advice without perceiving the presence of the adviser.

Download or read book Newton on the Christian Life written by Tony Reinke and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Newton is best known as the slave trader turned hymn writer who penned the most popular English hymn in history: “Amazing Grace.” However, many Christians are less familiar with the decades he spent in relative obscurity, laboring as a “spiritual doctor” while pastoring small parishes in England. In the latest addition to Crossway’s growing Theologians on the Christian Life series, Tony Reinke introduces modern readers to Newton’s pastoral wisdom by leading them through the many sermons, hymns, and—most importantly—letters that he wrote over the course of his life. Considered by many to be one of the greatest letter writers of all time, Newton has valuable insights to offer modern Christians, especially when it comes to fusing together sound doctrine, lived experience, and godly practice. Part of the Theologians on the Christian Life series.

Book excerpt: Æsop was a storyteller who was freed from slavery because of his wit and cleverness. Æsop told simple tales which always had a moral or "sharp point." WHile his stories were told to adults, because he used animals as the main characters, Æsop's fables came to be considered children's stories. This collection of over 300 tales is based on the nineteenth century research and translation of Reverand George Townsend, and returns the fables to the adult audience for which the fables were intended. The familiar stories are there, as well as dozens of lesser-known fables
