The area of aviation research, technology, and development is constantly growing, and many marvels in this field await our next generation. Through this unit, students will read several selections about aviation, research topics of interest, conduct scientific experiments, construct aircraft, and make connections with prior knowledge. The Courage to Soar has been designed for students in third through fifth grades, and, with some minor modifications, it will interest and challenge grades six and seven as well. Even though the content is primarily science, the activities are rich in the language art skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. For many of the lessons, a student text with a vocabulary list is provided for guided reading instruction. In states where science subjects are mandated, teachers may use this guide to meet their language arts objectives while presenting enriching science activities to their students. This educational guide is made up of ten activities, which are divided into one or more lessons about the topic. The objectives and national standards are given at the beginning of each activity. However, the location of the material lists and the pre-lesson instructions varies. For some activities, these are given at the beginning of the activity and include the necessary materials and instructions for all of the lessons in that activity. For other activities, the lists are simply too long, so they are included at the beginning of each indi-vidual lesson. The procedure for each lesson is always given with the lesson. When student text and vocabulary are a part of the lesson, they are located after the procedure. Special homework instructions, patterns, diagrams, charts, etc., are located with the lesson or at the end of the activity. The activities in this guide have been divided into lessons that generally represent one class period of 1 to 11/2 hours. Teachers should feel free to modify these lessons to meet the needs of their students, and to vary the length of time needed to complete each one. The preparation times to gather the materials and follow the pre-lesson instructions are listed at the beginning of each activity. It is recommended that The Courage to Soar be taught before this guide, but it is not necessary. The Courage to Soar Higher covers just a small part of the whole NASA story. The accomplishments of this Agency are vast; however, this guide addresses only the work thought to be most interesting to young students. The combined knowledge, intellect, and creativity of the scientists, engineers, and other workers who make up the NASA family is a significant treasure. These workers are dedicated to NASA's mission and they are determined to make it successful. Teachers should try to instill a great respect for these workers and inspire their students to join the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers as they teach the unit.

ESMD does this by developing robotic precursor missions, human transportation elements, and life-support systems. Ultimately, this Directorate of NASA serves as a stepping stone for the future exploration of Mars and other destinations. The NASA BEST Activities Guides were designed to teach students the Engineering Design Process. Our team created three guides to accommodate three grade groups: K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. All follow the same set of activities and teach students about humans' endeavor to return to the Moon. Specifically, how we investigate the Moon remotely, the modes of transportation to and on the Moon, and how humans will live and work on the Moon. The Engineering Design Process is a series of steps engineers use to guide them in problem solving. Engineers must ask a question, imagine a solution, plan a design, create that model, experiment and test that model, then take time to improve the original – all steps that are crucial to mission success at NASA. What makes this guide different from others is: (1) there are no specific instructions or “recipes” for building the items; and (2) there are no given drawings. The emphasis is for students to understand that engineers must “imagine and plan” before they begin to build and experiment. To successfully complete the NASA BEST Activities, students must draw their ideas first before constructing. Many of the activities have been adapted from others, and then aligned with the theme of efforts to return to the Moon with a focus on using the Engineering Design Process. Each activity features objectives, a list of materials, educator information, procedures, and student worksheets. When appropriate, the guide provides images, charts, and graphics for the activities. All activities are intended for students to work in teams. It is recommended that each team consist of 3 or 4 students. The activities can be used to supplement curricula during the school day or as activities in after-school clubs; as a set or individually. This guide of activities was also designed to keep material costs to a reasonable limit, using items often already found in the classroom or from home. Furthermore, all activities correlate to national science, mathematics, technology, and engineering standard(s).
