Book excerpt: In September 1968, the FDP of AGARD held a specialists' meeting in Paris on transonic aerodynamics, in recognition of the fact that the absence of adequate theoretical methods and wind-tunnels of high enough Reynolds number had already led to costly shortcomings in the transonic performance of certain combat and transport aircraft. Since projected aerospace systems, military, civil and space-oriented, would involve flight at Reynolds number of up to 100 million, the FDP undertook an examination of the requirements of NATO nations for wind tunnel facilities for testing large models at high Reynolds numbers.

Book excerpt: As a contribution to a 1971 NATO seminar on aerodynamical testing facilities, a brief report is given on the outcome of a specialists' meeting organized by the fluid dynamics panel of AGARD and held at Gottingen. The best technical advice available within AGARD leads to the conclusion that one or several large new windtunnels would contribute immensely to the effectiveness of a large number of aerospace systems now planned or contemplated within the NATO nations.

Pankhurst and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependence of transonic flow phenomena on Reynolds number gives rise to serious problems in the extrapolation of results from existing test facilities to the conditions of full scale, and in model-scale simulation of flight conditions in ground-based facilities; at the same time, the transonic flow about a given body can only be predicted with limited success, particularly for the flow about a complete aircraft. With such considerations in mind the Fluid Dynamics Panel sponsored this Specialists' Meeting on Facilities and Techniques for Aerodynamic Testing at Transonic Speeds and High Reynolds Numbers. Its main purpose was the advancement of our understanding of the tools needed in the future, particularly for testing sweptwing aircraft, slender-wing aircraft and space-shuttle vehicles, in the transonic speed range, so as to clarify what techniques need to be developed, and what facilities are required. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists have learned to use liquid and gaseous helium to overcome the limitations imposed by the usual wind and water tunnels for testing the performance of aircraft or the behavior of the atmosphere. This book covers fundamental studies of the turbulence problem, practical applications of turbulence, superfluid turbulence, cryogenic turbulence research, and new types of miniature flow instrumentation, all which are crucial for high Reynolds number research. This state-of-the-art presentation will interest physicists in fluid dynamics, engineers working with turbulent flows, and naval and aerospace engineers testing realistic parameter ranges.
