Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a blunt axially symmetric object is exposed to a sufficiently high speed air stream, the air behind the shock has a very high enthalpy and the object will melt. In order to compute the rate of melting, or any other macroscopic features of the composite flow, both the gas boundary layer flow and the melting body flow must be analyzed. This analysis can most conveniently be carried by (1) assuming an interface temperature, Ti, (2) predicting the gas boundary layer associated with that Ti, (3) predicting the liquid layer flow using as boundary conditions the results of step (2), and (4) selecting the correct Ti as that value which leads to a consistent energy balance. This note contains an analysis of the liquid layer flow for a given, quite general, family of material properties. The interface temperature, Ti, the skin friction at the interface, the evaporation rate at the interface, and the pressure gradient, are taken as known quantities since the latter three items are controlled by the gas layer and are known once Ti is given. Book Synopsis Free-flight Investigation of Heat Transfer to an Unswept Cylinder Subjected to an Incident Shock and Flow Interference from an Upstream Body at Mach Numbers Up to 5.50 by : Howard S. Carter
Download or read book Free-flight Investigation of Heat Transfer to an Unswept Cylinder Subjected to an Incident Shock and Flow Interference from an Upstream Body at Mach Numbers Up to 5.50 written by Howard S. Carter and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat-transfer rates have been measured in free flight along the stagnation line of an unswept cylinder mounted transversely on an axial cylinder so that the shock wave from the hemispherical nose of the axial cylinder intersected the bow shock of the unswept transverse cylinder. Data were obtained at Mach numbers from 2.53 to 5.50 and at Reynolds numbers based on the transverse cylinder diameter from 1.00 x 106 to 1.87 x 106. Shadowgraph pictures made in a wind tunnel showed that the flow field was influenced by boundary-layer separation on the axial cylinder and by end effects on the transverse cylinder as well as by the intersecting shocks. Under these conditions, the measured heat-transfer rates had inconsistent variations both in magnitude and distribution which precluded separating the effects of these disturbances. The general magnitude of the measured heating rates at Mach numbers up to 3 was from 0.1 to 0.5 of the theoretical laminar heating rates along the stagnation line for an infinite unswept cylinder in undisturbed flow. At Mach numbers above 4 the measured heating rates were from 1.5 to 2 times the theoretical rates.
Book Synopsis Stagnation-point Shielding by Melting and Vaporization by : Leonard Roberts
Download or read book Stagnation-point Shielding by Melting and Vaporization written by Leonard Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate theoretical analysis is made of the shielding mechanism whereby the rate of heat transfer to the forward stagnation point of blunt bodies is reduced by melting and vaporization. General qualitative results are given and a numerical example, the melting and vaporization of ice, is presented and discussed in detail.

Book Synopsis Heat Transfer in Structures by : H. Schuh
Download or read book Heat Transfer in Structures written by H. Schuh and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat Transfer in Structures discusses the heat flow problems directly related to structures. A large section of the book presents the heat conduction in solids. The fundamentals of the analytical method are covered briefly, while introduction on the use of semi-analytical methods is treated in detail. Various approximate methods and finite difference methods are fully explained. The description of structural elements is dealt with extensively. The subject of analogues for finding temperature distributions are briefly discussed, while similarity laws and model testing are covered more comprehensively. Another topic of interest is the heat flow inside the solid part of an ablating body which is covered in detail. Thermal conductance across interfaces and joints are analyzed. And a thorough discussion of the steady heat flow is provided. A section of the text covers the simple structural elements. The book will provide useful information to aeronautics, astronautics, mechanics, engineers, and students of the physical sciences.
