Book excerpt: Fight fat and win with the revolutionary “no-gym” machine-free at-home workout program to sculpt, firm, and “SLEEKIFY!” your body—in as little as four weeks. When Victoria’s Secret models need to look their best for a runway show or ad campaign, they call Michael Olajide, Jr. The former championship boxer has a patented fat-melting fitness program that has helped reshape the bodies of stars like Liv Tyler, Sports Illustrated model Alyssa Miller, and Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima. Now you can have Michael Olajide as your personal trainer, too. This is your chance to experience the same sculpting, firming, sleekifying results that have been turning heads on the red carpet for years. This twenty-eight-day fitness and nutrition plan—the same one Olajide gives his clients—lets you unleash your body’s natural energy at home without having to invest a fortune on useless gym equipment. Instead, Olajide is in your corner every day, every step along the way—a one-man entourage urging you on as you build strength, tone muscle, and lose weight without bulking up. SLEEKIFY!’s techniques are rooted in the “sweet science” of boxing, but you don’t need a class, a ring, or a punching bag. All you need is a jump rope—and the will to be your best. Equipment-free, plateau-proof, and, most important, fun, this workout puts the power in your hands. You dictate the intensity of the workout and, ultimately, your success. Had enough of what you see in the mirror? Ready to punch out stubborn belly fat and build the stronger, more streamlined body you’ve always wanted? Leave the machines behind and SLEEKIFY!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love stories wherein people ask themselves: what is love? In How Other People Make Love, Thisbe Nissen chronicles the lives and choices of people questioning the heteronormative institution of marriage. Not best-served by established conventions and conventional mores, these people—young, old, gay, straight, midwestern, coastal—are finding their own paths in learning who they are and how they want to love and be loved, even when those paths must be blazed through the unknown. Concerning husbands and wives, lovers and leavers, Nissen's stories explore our search for connection and all the ways we undercut it, unwittingly and intentionally, when we do find it. How do we hold ourselves together—to function, work, and survive—while endlessly yearning to be undone, unraveled, and laid bare, however untenable and excruciating? How Other People Make Lovecontains nine stories. "Win's Girl" features a single woman who works at an Iowa slaughterhouse and uses the insurance money from a car accident to update the electric system in her dead parents' old house, only to be unwittingly embroiled with a shady electrician who ultimately forces her to stand up for herself. In "Home Is Where the Heart Gives Out and We Arouse the Grass," a young woman flees after cheating on her husband and winds up at a Nebraska roadside motel populated by participants in a regional dog show who help her decide what to do next. In "Unity Brought Them Together," a young man heads to his favorite New York coffee shop intending to finish the Christmas cards his vacationing fiancée insists on sending, but winds up meeting another displaced young midwestern man there and going home with him instead. All these stories explore the question, "how do we love?" as well as the answers we find, discard, follow, banish, and cling to in all our humanness and desperation. How Other People Make Love asserts that there aren't right and wrong ways to love; there are only our very complicated and contradictory human hearts, minds, bodies, and desires—all searching for something, whether we know what that is or not. These are stories for anyone who has ever loved or been loved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tough girls are everywhere these days. Whether it is Ripley battling a swarm of monsters in the Aliens trilogy or Captain Janeway piloting the starship Voyager through space in the continuing Star Trek saga, women strong in both body and mind have become increasingly popular in the films, television series, advertisements, and comic books of recent decades. In Tough Girls, Sherrie A. Inness explores the changing representations of women in all forms of popular media and what those representations suggest about shifting social mores. She begins her examination of tough women in American popular culture with three popular television shows of the 1960s and '70s—The Avengers, Charlie's Angels, and The Bionic Woman—and continues through such contemporary pieces as a recent ad for Calvin Klein jeans and current television series such as The X-files and Xena: Warrior Princess. Although all these portrayals show women who can take care of themselves in ways that have historically been seen as uniquely male, they also variously undercut women's toughness. She argues that even some of the strongest depictions of women have perpetuated women's subordinate status, using toughness in complicated ways to break or bend gender stereotypes while simultaneously affirming them. Also of interest— Madcaps, Screwballs, and Con Women: The Female Trickster in American Culture Lori Landay
