Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This picaresque novel owes much to Cervantes, Fielding, and Bellow, with a certain nod to Dostoevsky and Franzen. We meet the main character as a young successful adult and follow him into friendships and situations that are amusing, crushing, and even criminal. We follow his hilarious and fateful paths through multiple French trips, including a pig hunt in Perigord. Paris, Nice, Monaco, and Val d'Isere are richly explored. In Mexican trips, he is trapped in Mayan sexual rites, climbs Orizaba, and almost dies at sea in a Pacific storm. His formative life is recounted, including events which warp forever his relationship with women. His psychic state permits sex with Greek goddesses and to receive stunning predictions from Apollo. Finally, he is led to Hades by the goddess Juno, a lover, and tried by King Minos for the crimes of rape and murder. Persephone prosecutes and Pluto defends. A jury of prominent dead is selected. One witness, Hitler's ghost, describes the event that triggered his order to exterminate the Jews, offered in evidence by Pluto as a counterpoint in magnitude to Rory’s crimes. Rory denies guilt as the trial ends. Memory and imagination grow from the soil of the author’s brain and by definition are autochthonic. Could you say that the fiction that fiction is fiction is not fiction?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rusty Hix first developed a love of travel and adventure when he accompanied his family across the United States as a young boy. As he matured into a young man, Rusty began traveling internationally to feed his curiosity for understanding the worlds greatest mysteries. From hiking in national parks to caving in foreign countries, Hixs fascinating stories detail unforgettable adventures in Cancun, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, China, Easter Island, Finland, and many other locations. In sometimes irreverent prose, Hix chronicles his not-so-typical travel tales of helicoptering over the geothermal areas of New Zealand; zip-lining, kayaking, and whitewater rafting in Costa Rica; and visiting pagodas, Buddhist temples, and the Great Wall in China. He also describes many of the wild experiences that include a panda sitting on his lap, vertical caving, sky diving, climbing the worlds highest structure, and a serious car accident that nearly cost him his life. Hix also details the food, customs and behavior of people within a variety of cultures along with vivid descriptions of the scenery where it all takes place. No Adventure Too Ridiculous is a colorful celebration of one mans escapades as he explores far-flung places on a legendary and sometimes farcical journey around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When 40-something housewife/mother, Muriel “Boo Boo” Gertrude Setzer Wilkerson Knowlton collides with middle age --a.k.a. “change” -- she clings the more stubbornly to her sacred convictions of her own inferiority, unworthiness, undesirability, and to her false pride and arrogance. But “change” persists: * Classes with the swami in New Age thought, combined with her daughter’s clairvoyance, begin to topple personal paradigms; * A new job at Great Convenience Store forces proximity to the dreaded gamut of humanity -- “Americana” at its best and worst -- which teaches that life is funny and worth is more than skin deep; * Husband Larke forms a friendship with a beautiful rival; * A mystery man -- an astrologer/ecologist/Vietnam veteran -- forces Muriel to claim her womanhood, mercilessly stripping her of false concepts, leaving her soul naked before her personal power of Being; * Danger and death force a shift of awareness and perspective, enabling Muriel to see that there is “extra” in the ordinary; that one creates one’s own reality; that it is one’s personal responsibility to be joyful, to savor the life experience with no apologies, to be Who one truly is, to love and be loved, and indeed, to relish the journey through life as a Great Adventure. Humor, pathos, a bucolic small-town setting, a believable narrative pace, a cornucopia of personalities and an endearing American family combine with some out-of-the-mainstream thought to create a unique, engaging read. The storyline is loosely constructed (typical of life) while a deeper, more comprehensive thread of meaning subtly weaves through life’s daily kaleidoscope, tying together the whole picture and building subconsciously in urgency right up to the last chapter’s WHAMMY.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Grof presents a useful model of the psyche--a model extended by his thirty years of studying non-ordinary states of consciousness. It is useful for understanding such phenomena as shamanism, mysticism, psychedelic states, spontaneous visionary experiences, and psychotic episodes. The model is also useful in explaining the dynamics of experiential psychotherapies and a variety of sociopolitical manifestations such as war and revolution. This book might have been entitled Beyond Drugs. The second part describes the principles and process of the non-pharmacological technique developed by the author and his wife, Christina, for self-exploration and for psychotherapy. Grof explores in detail the components of this technique. He describes its method, its effective mechanisms, as well as its goals and potential. Its practice is simple, since it utilizes the natural healing capacity of the psyche.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, she cooked veggie burgers for friends and hamburgers for herself—to enjoy outside, six feet apart. Her Mormon ancestors canned peaches to prepare for the End of Days and congealed beef broth into aspic as a surefire cure for ailment. Throughout the richly layered essays of Processed Meats, Walker ponders food choices and life choices, dissecting how we process disaster, repackage it, and turn it into something edible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We understand who we are and the world we live in only because of story. Without story, it is impossible to define our identity, meaning, purpose, or action. The Bible, after all, is a story--it begins with Alpha and ends with Omega. It is God's story--the story of everything. By it, we learn how the Christian story is not a piece of a larger story but claims to be the story in which other stories find their place. To answer the most fundamental questions about who we are and the world we live in, we must use a story. From a mother who visits her son on death row, to a disillusioned man questioning suicide, to a family experiencing the hope and hardship of a premature baby, this book explores ten central themes of the gospel--steadfast love, sin, faith, holiness, joy, goodness, hope, compassion, forgiveness, and peace--in story form. An interpretation of each story follows in a section where careful analysis sheds light on each biblical theme. By using storytelling to communicate theological truth, this work provides a unique resource for theological reflection that's helpful for anyone willing to step into a story.
