Book excerpt: This book presents a concise, clear, and consistent account of the methodology of phase synchronization, an extension of modal analysis to decouple any linear system in real space. It expounds on the novel theory of phase synchronization and presents recent advances, while also providing relevant background on classical decoupling theories that are used in structural analysis. The theory is illustrated with a broad range of examples. The theoretical development is also supplemented by applications to engineering problems. In addition, the methodology is implemented in a MATLAB algorithm which can be used to solve many of the illustrative examples in the book. This book is suited for researchers, practicing engineers, and graduate students in various fields of engineering, mathematics, and physical science.

It is addressed to graduate students and researchers in control theory with topics touching on a variety of areas of interest to the control community such as cascaded systems, flatness, optimal control, and Hamiltonian and infinite-dimensional systems. The reader is provided with a well-integrated synthesis of the latest thinking in these subjects without the need for an exhaustive literature review. The internationally known contributors to this volume represent many of the most reputable control centers in Europe. Advanced Topics in Control Systems Theory can be used to support either a one-term general advanced course on nonlinear control theory, devoting a few lectures to each chapter, or for more focused and intensive courses at graduate level. The book’s concise but pedagogical manner will give an ideal start to researchers wishing to broaden their knowledge in aspects of modern control theory outside their own expertise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoupling or non-interactive control has attracted considerable research attention since the 1960s when control engineers started to deal with multivariable systems. The theory and design techniques for decoupling control have now, more or less matured for linear time-invariant systems, yet there is no single book which focuses on such an important topic. The present monograph fills this gap by presenting a fairly comprehensive and detailed treatment of decoupling theory and relevant design methods. Decoupling control under the framework of polynomial transfer function and frequency response settings, is included as well as the disturbance decoupling problem. The emphasis here is on special or relatively new compensation schemes such as (true and virtual) feedforward control and disturbance observers, rather than use of feedback control alone. The results are presented in a self-contained way and only the knowledge of basic linear systems theory is assumed of the reader.

Written by eminent, leading, international experts, the contributors provide up-to-date aspects of topics discussed and present fresh, original insights into their own experience with Circuits and Systems. The main aim of this book is to present most of the new trends and recent advances of the impressive evolution in the discipline of circuits and systems. Special emphasis is given in the interaction between the classic areas of systems theory (feedback control, circuits design, electronics, etc) and the modern techniques of computational intelligence (neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic and expert systems) since this fertile interaction promises to open up new horizons in circuits and systems theory. This book is composed of four parts. Part I is devoted to Circuits and Electronics and also includes Power Systems. Part II refers to Systems Theory and Control (H infinity problems, feedback control, non-linear systems, robust stability and robust control, multivariable systems, hybrid systems and hydraulic systems). Part III presents the latest developments in the Robotics (theory and applications) while Part IV is devoted to Computational Intelligence in Systems Theory.

Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to presentation of new results of research on systems of non-integer order, called also fractional systems. Their analysis and practical implementation have been the object of spontaneous development for a few last decades. The fractional order models can depict a physical plant better than the classical integer order ones. This covers different research fields such as insulator properties, visco-elastic materials, electrodynamic, electrothermal, electrochemical, economic processes modelling etc. On the other hand fractional controllers often outperform their integer order counterparts. This volume contains new ideas and examples of implementation, theoretical and pure practical aspects of using a non-integer order calculus. It is divided into four parts covering: mathematical fundamentals, modeling and approximations, controllability, observability and stability problems and practical applications of fractional control systems. The first part expands the base of tools and methods of the mathematical basis for non-integer order calculus. Part two focuses on new methods and developments in process modeling and fractional derivatives approximations. In the third part a bunch of papers which raise problems of controllability, observability and stability of non-integer order systems is provided. Part four is devoted to presentation of different fractional order control applications. This book was created thanks to many experts in the field of fractional calculus: authors, anonymous referees whose comments allowed us to improve the final form of the papers and active and inspiring discussion of the participants of RRNR'2015, the 7th Conference on Non-Integer Order Calculus and Its Applications that was organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, West Pomeranian University of Technology, Szczecin, Poland.
