This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Prostaglandins and Related Compounds, first held in Vienna 1972, revisited the city after 24 years for the 10TH Symposium. For the many re searchers working in this multi-disciplinary field it was an opportunity to exchange their ex periences and share new data with colleagues from all around the world. This scientific exchange was largely encouraged by the unseasonably cold and rainy weather. For the first time, there was quite a large attendance from the former Communist countries. Eugene Garfield prepared a key note address delivered during the meeting (The Sci entist 1996, 12) reviewing the contribution of the Nobel Laureates U.S. von Euler, l.R. Vane, S.K. Bergstrom, and B.I. Samuelsson, discussing the relevance of the more than 40,000 pa pers in this area published since 1991. Overall, there is still a rapidly growing interest, and in particular a great variety of clinical applications of this family of compounds which were dis cussed in detail during the meeting. Beside the lectures there were 19 workshops covering nearly all the topics of key in terest. All the speakers were invited to prepare a manuscript which has resulted in the volume now in your hands. Special thanks to Dr. Patrick Wong and the new publisher of this series who helped to publish the proceedings in the usual quality and reasonable period of time. Looking forward to seeing all of you again in Florence in 1999, hopefully with much more sun.

Book Synopsis Development of Anti-Asthma Drugs by : Derek R. Buckle
Download or read book Development of Anti-Asthma Drugs written by Derek R. Buckle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of Anti-Asthma Drugs reviews existing asthma treatments and novel approaches currently under investigation, in the context of their mode of action and clinical effectiveness, in the hope that this might lead to a greater understanding of the factors involved in the expression of the disease and, therefore, in the design of better drugs. It is planned based on the concept of the causes and treatment of asthma, This book is organized in three main parts. Part I deals with the nature of asthma, its pathological mechanisms, natural history and epidemiology. Part II discusses mediators associated with asthma including platelet-activating factor, leukotrienes and histamine. Part II covers pharmaceutical approaches in the development of anti-asthma drugs and includes sections on inhibitors of mediator release and competitive and functional antagonists. This book will be of interest to persons dealing with studies on anti-asthma drugs and those interested in pharmacological development.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Eicosanoids (1987) by : A. L. Willis
Download or read book Handbook of Eicosanoids (1987) written by A. L. Willis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the extensive compilation of biochemical data featured in Volume I of the Handbook of Eicosanoids, the new Volume II describes the past, present, and potential future impact of eicosanoid research on new drug development. The reader is taken from a historical perspective through state-of-the-art basic concepts to extensive tabulation of molecular structures of compounds known to act via the eicosanoid system. Much emphasis is given to recent breakthroughs in the mechanism of action of anti-inflammatory corticosteroids and the development of receptor antagonists for prostaglandins and leukotrienes. There is also an introductory chapter that proposes areas that require further investigation and novel approaches using existing technology. This handbook will thus be invaluable for medicinal chemists, pharmacologists, and all those involved in basic research in the eicosanoid area. In addition, many parts of this handbook are suitable for use by university lecturers and students. There are 20 figures and 44 extensive tables as well as a bibliography containing more than 2,000 references that complement the text.
Book Synopsis Eicosanoids in Reproduction by : Murray D. Mitchell
Download or read book Eicosanoids in Reproduction written by Murray D. Mitchell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide comprehensive coverage and an update of the major roles of eicosanoids in reproduction. It presents considerable evidence of the importance of lipoxygenase metabolites of arachidonic acid metabolism in reproductive processes. This interesting volume embraces a multidisciplinary approach to research in reproduction (biochemistry, endocrinology, physiology, pharmacology, etc.) at all levels, from whole animal studies through organ, cellular, and molecular approaches. This one-of-a-kind work provides several clinically relevant chapters and places emphasis on the relevance to human reproduction, when applicable. This text is an excellent update for researchers and clinicians on the current state of knowledge of the role of eicosanoids in mechanisms critical for successful reproductive function. This informative, easy-to-read resource is also useful to all those with a more specific interest in obstetrics, gynecology, clinical endocrinology, and the study of fertility.

Book Synopsis Biology of Sleep Substances by : Shojiro Inoue
Download or read book Biology of Sleep Substances written by Shojiro Inoue and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-03-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All aspects of sleep sciences are included in this excellent resource text, with special reference to sleep substances and sleep modulators. The historical development of the theories of sleep are reviewed in conjunction with the technical problems. All candidate substances are overviewed as to their sites of presence, chemical nature, bioassay techniques, physiological and pharmacological effects. On the basis of a standardized methodology developed by the author, sleep-modulatory characteristics of some substances are compared and evaluated in quantitative terms. The sleep regulatory mechanisms, which are composed of complex neurohumoral subsystems, are analyzed from the results of recent neurophysiological and neuroendocrinological experiments. Furthermore, an evolutionary aspect of sleep substances is taken into consideration. Chapters Highlight: Techniques for isolation and evaluation Prostaglandins Paradoxical sleep factors Sleep-promoting substances and nucleosides
