Book excerpt: The global incidence of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases has been gradually increasing in recent years, which seriously threatens human health and increases the economic burden. More importantly, gastrointestinal and hepatic malignancies have the highest incidence and mortality rates among all tumors, such as liver cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer. There are also non-neoplastic diseases such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, chronic atrophic gastritis, ulcerative colitis, and reflux esophageal disease that also affect patients' quality of life. Although progress has been made in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases, and corresponding therapeutic drugs have been also developed, the specific mechanisms of the diseases are still not revealed and there is a lack of specific drugs. In view of this, this topic aims to explore new molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis and potential therapeutic agents and pharmacological effects of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases.

Book excerpt: This unique book deals with both inflammation and cancer in a single source of publication. They are seldom grouped together although it has been known that both diseases are closely associated, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract and liver. As the book touches on two such major areas of diseases in humans, it should be of interest to a wider audience of researchers and readers. It is noted that the book combines the effort of both basic scientists and clinicians from different countries with extensive experiences in molecular biology and clinical practice to unveil the most updated picture of the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies in the treatment of inflammation and cancer in the digestive tract. In this regard, potential pathogenic modulators and also therapeutic options are widely discussed. These types of information would definitely broaden our knowledge in better understanding these diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we provide insights into liver – cancer and immunology. Experts in the field provide an overview over fundamental immunological questions in liver cancer and tumorimmunology, which form the base for immune based approaches in HCC, which gain increasing interest in the community due to first promising results obtained in early clinical trials. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most common cause of cancer related death in the United States. Treatment options are limited. Viral hepatitis is one of the major risk factors for HCC, which represents a typical “inflammation-induced” cancer. Immune-based treatment approaches have revolutionized oncology in recent years. Various treatment strategies have received FDA approval including dendritic cell vaccination, for prostate cancer as well as immune checkpoint inhibition targeting the CTLA4 or the PD1/PDL1 axis in melanoma, lung, and kidney cancer. Additionally, cell based therapies (adoptive T cell therapy, CAR T cells and TCR transduced T cells) have demonstrated significant efficacy in patients with B cell malignancies and melanoma. Immune checkpoint inhibitors in particular have generated enormous excitement across the entire field of oncology, providing a significant benefit to a minority of patients.

Book excerpt: Obesity and its associated comorbidities (e.g. type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease) represent a serious challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. Obesity is a chronic disease, characterized by excessive adipose tissue mass, resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, with growing relevance in an increasingly sedentary society. Obesity is multifactorial, where alterations in the physiology of gastrointestinal hormones, playing a key role in the interplay between the gastrointestinal system and the brain, and in the gut microbiota, contribute to the development of this disorder.
