The global thermosphere-ionosphere-middle atmosphere system is being extensively studied by means of satellites, rockets and ground-based observations. Research includes coupling between the ionized and neutral part of the atmosphere, coupling between high and low latitudes, coupling with the mesosphere and thermosphere as well as between the plasmasphere and the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The developments in this area by means of observations and modelling are presented in the twenty-nine papers contained in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 87. This volume provides a review of progress made in recent years in experimental and theoretical investigation of the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere and coupling between these regions and the ionosphere. Detailed study of the mesosphere/lower thermosphere/ionosphere (MLTI) region has historically been difficult because of its relative inaccessibility to direct measurement techniques and the complex and highly coupled processes which occur there. Although we have still not successfully unraveled all these complex interactions, we have made significant recent progress toward a fuller understanding of the basic state of the MLTI and of the dominant wave and coupling processes. This monograph includes a set of tutorial papers, which review our current understanding of aspects of the MLTI. These tutorials are interspersed with a selection of papers describing research progress on various topics of current interest in this region. The book should therefore be useful both to the newcomer, as an introduction to this field of research, and to the more experienced researcher, providing an overview of research in progress as well as a convenient reference collection of papers describing our current understanding.

Book excerpt: The papers presented at these meetings provide an updated review of the area and also cover a wide range of current research topics. This volume contains 46 selected papers covering the whole spectrum of modelling approaches, including analytical, empirical, semi-empirical and numerical models. A proportion of the papers deal with the energetics, dynamics and composition of just the thermosphere, whilst others are concerned with ionospheric behaviour at low, middle and high latitudes. Coupling phenomena figure prominently and numerical simulations are presented to show the coupling processes, feedback mechanisms and time delays associated with the interactions between the magnetosphere and ionosphere, the magnetosphere and thermosphere, and the mid-latitude ionosphere and plasmasphere.

Book excerpt: PAGEOPH, stratosphere, these differences provide us with new evidence, interpretation of which can materially help to advance our understanding of stratospheric dynamics in general. It is now weil established that smaller-scale motions-in particular gravity waves and turbulence-are of fundamental importance in the general circulation of the mesosphere; they seem to be similarly, if less spectacularly, significant in the troposphere, and probably also in the stratosphere. Our understanding of these motions, their effects on the mean circulation and their mutual interactions is progressing rapidly, as is weil illustrated by the papers in this issue; there are reports of observational studies, especially with new instruments such as the Japanese MV radar, reviews of the state of theory, a laboratory study and an analysis of gravity waves and their effects in the high resolution "SKYHI" general circulation model. There are good reasons to suspect that gravity waves may be of crucial significance in making the stratospheric circulation the way it is (modeling experience being one suggestive piece of evidence for this). Direct observational proof has thus far been prevented by the difficulty of making observations of such scales of motion in this region; in one study reported here, falling sphere observations are used to obtain information on the structure and intensity of waves in the upper stratosphere.

Chapter 1 provides four papers under the heading Up-dating of CIRA 1986. In Chapter 2, entitled Trace Constituents of the Middle and Upper Atmosphere, the papers published go some way toward providing a set of preliminary reference atmospheres of significant trace species of the middle atmosphere and lower thermosphere. These trace species play important roles in controlling the chemistry, radiation balance and circulation patterns of the Earth's stratosphere, mesosphere and thermosphere. The third chapter, The Localized Response of the Lower Thermosphere and Ionosphere at High Latitudes, describes the broad range of recent advances made by theoretical and modelling activities and also reports on experimental investigations using a wide range of methods, ground-based radar, ground-based optical, space-borne in situ and

Our knowledge of the dynamics of the upper atmosphere has increased substantially with the launch of NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). The winds associated with tides and planetary scale disturbances have been found to be significantly larger than expected. What has been even more surprising is the extent to which airglow variability is controlled by these dynamics. Variations in airglow emission rate have been observed for many decades, but until the global scale picture became available, their origin remained a mystery. Hence this session on Influence of Tides on Species Concentrations was particularly timely. This volume consists of papers presented at the session, including model results, satellite observations, and ground-based observations. What is clear from this volume is the very dominant role of dynamics in airglow variability and species concentrations. Experimental papers deal with GLO observations of E- and F-

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study of the causes of disrupted ionospheric E layers at middle latitudes. The irregularities described here are organized accordingly to the Richardson (Ri) number, starting from negative, to less than one quarter, to larger than one. Since Ri is a function of the neutral winds, a methodology to estimate the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) neutral winds between 95 - 130 km altitude is applied for data collected during the incoherent scatter radar (ISR) coordinated "World Day" campaigns at Arecibo. The methodology reflects the physical coupling between the neutral atmosphere and the ionosphere at E-layer heights. The method is compared with previous attempts to calculate the neutral winds at the Arecibo Observatory. The methodology is validated using error analysis and considering possible data contamination due to gravity waves. Temperature profiles, electric fields, and ion composition are also estimated. Using those parameters, the subsequent sections of the dissertation study irregularities observed in the neutral atmosphere in the MLT region during the day. Analysis of temperature variations following convective instability events shows that most of the days have broad unstable regions, where the condition needed to develop this kind of instability is present (buoyancy frequency N^20). During these days, disturbed temperature profiles are observed. Dynamic instability studies show zones with 0
