Book Synopsis Robust Optimization-Directed Design by : Andrew J. Kurdila
Download or read book Robust Optimization-Directed Design written by Andrew J. Kurdila and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-04 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robust design—that is, managing design uncertainties such as model uncertainty or parametric uncertainty—is the often unpleasant issue crucial in much multidisciplinary optimal design work. Recently, there has been enormous practical interest in strategies for applying optimization tools to the development of robust solutions and designs in several areas, including aerodynamics, the integration of sensing (e.g., laser radars, vision-based systems, and millimeter-wave radars) and control, cooperative control with poorly modeled uncertainty, cascading failures in military and civilian applications, multi-mode seekers/sensor fusion, and data association problems and tracking systems. The contributions to this book explore these different strategies. The expression "optimization-directed” in this book’s title is meant to suggest that the focus is not agonizing over whether optimization strategies identify a true global optimum, but rather whether these strategies make significant design improvements.

Book excerpt: This volume presents up-to-date material on the state of the art in evolutionary and deterministic methods for design, optimization and control with applications to industrial and societal problems from Europe, Asia, and America. EUROGEN 2015 was the 11th of a series of International Conferences devoted to bringing together specialists from universities, research institutions and industries developing or applying evolutionary and deterministic methods in design optimization, with emphasis on solving industrial and societal problems. The conference was organised around a number of parallel symposia, regular sessions, and keynote lectures focused on surrogate-based optimization in aerodynamic design, adjoint methods for steady & unsteady optimization, multi-disciplinary design optimization, holistic optimization in marine design, game strategies combined with evolutionary computation, optimization under uncertainty, topology optimization, optimal planning, shape optimization, and production scheduling.
Book Synopsis Multidisciplinary Design Optimization by : Natalia M. Alexandrov
Download or read book Multidisciplinary Design Optimization written by Natalia M. Alexandrov and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) has recently emerged as a field of research and practice that brings together many previously disjointed disciplines and tools of engineering and mathematics. MDO can be described as a technology, environment, or methodology for the design of complex, coupled engineering systems, such as aircraft, automobiles, and other mechanisms, the behavior of which is determined by interacting subsystems.
Book Synopsis Optimal Device Design by : A. F. J. Levi
Download or read book Optimal Device Design written by A. F. J. Levi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dramatic advances in the control of physical systems at the atomic scale have provided many new ways to manufacture devices. An important question is how best to design these ultra-small complex systems. Access to vast amounts of inexpensive computing power makes it possible to accurately simulate their physical properties. Furthermore, high-performance computers allow us to explore the large number of degrees of freedom with which to construct new device configurations. This book aims to lay the groundwork for a methodology to exploit these emerging capabilities using optimal device design. By combining applied mathematics, smart computation, physical modeling, and 21st century engineering and fabrication tools it is possible to find atomic and nano-scale configurations that result in components with performance characteristics that have not been achieved using other methods"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Sponsored by the Technical Committee on Structural Design of the Technical Administrative Committee on Analysis and Computation of the Technical Activities Division of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report documents the dramatic new developments in the field of structural optimization over the last two decades. Changes in both computational techniques and applications can be seen by developments in computational methods and solution algorithms, the role of optimization during the various stages of structural design, and the stochastic nature of design in relation to structural optimization. Topics include: Ømethods for discrete variable structural optimization; Ødecomposition methods in structural optimization; Østate of the art on the use of genetic algorithms in design of steel structures; Øconceptual design optimization of engineering structures; Øtopology and geometry optimization of trusses and frames; Øevolutionary structural optimization; Ødesign and optimization of semi-rigid framed structures; Øoptimized performance-based design for buildings; Ømulti-objective optimum design of seismic-resistant structures; and Øreliability- and cost-oriented optimal bridge maintenance planning. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography of journal papers on structural optimization published between 1987 and 1999.
