Book excerpt: Over the years, the spray pyrolysis method has been used to deposit thin films of metal oxides and chalcogenide semiconductors. It is well known that the substrate temperature is the central parameter in spray pyrolysis that determines the physical and chemical properties of the deposits. However, somewhat high growth temperatures applied during the spray pyrolysis derived synthesis of metal oxide thin films may limit the surface-to-volume ratio requisite for their reasonable gas sensing characteristics. Thus, there is a strong drive to modify the spray pyrolysis technique in terms of growth temperature by retaining its inherent advantages. The present book is focussed on the effort to modify the conventional spray pyrolysis technique into novel route of advanced spray pyrolysis to synthesize the undoped and doped ZnO nanocrystalline thin films at relatively low substrate temperature and investigation of the effects of various preparative parameters and dopant incorporations, on the film properties such as crystallinity, surface morphology, the electrical and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas sensing properties.

Book excerpt: Advanced Oxidation Process is modern chemical method for the treatment of water containing non- biodegradable /toxic substances and to get decontaminated drinking water. Zinc acetate precursor is used to deposit zinc oxide thin films by Spray pyrolysis technique. Preperative parameters such as, substrate temperature, solution concentration and quantity of spraying solution were optimized to get good quality zinc oxide thin films. The prepared films were characterized by PEC, XRD, SEM, EDAX and UV-vis spectroscopy characterization techniques. Silver and gold deposited zinc oxide films were prepared to enhance photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria. The optimized stratified layer of TiO2 was given on zinc oxide thin films to improve its performance in photocatalytic process. The films prepared at optimized conditions of temperatures, concentrations are used in specially designed photoelectrochemical detoxification reactor. The prepared ZnO, Ag: ZnO, Au: ZnO and ZnO/TiO2 films are used to degrade Methylene blue (MB), textile effluent and inactivation bacteria such as E.coli, Bacillus, Salmonella, Staphylococcus etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrical, optical and structural properties of thin films of zinc oxide in the thickness range 10-400 nm on glass and fuzed quartz substrates have been investigated. The films were prepared using a new chemical spray technique which permitted deposition on either insulating or conducting substrates with a high degree of control over both the dimensions of the coatings and their electrical properties. The effects of variations in film thickness and heat treatment in oxygen have been examined and an assessment has been made of the dimensions of the depletion layer and of the diffusion coefficient of interstitial zinc in zinc oxide. Films with thicknesses greater than 40 nm are stable for long periods and show a crystalline structure with a preferred orientation of the C-axis normal to the substrate. An amorphous phase together with crystallites is apparent in films less than 40 nm thick. However, these films are unstable and show crystallite growth after storage at room temperature. In general, the optical properties of the films correspond with those of films prepared by other methods. (Author).

Book excerpt: Because of their unique properties (size, shape, and surface functions), functional materials are gaining significant attention in the areas of energy conversion and storage, sensing, electronics, photonics, and biomedicine. Within the chapters of this book written by well-known researchers, one will find the range of methods that have been developed for preparation and functionalization of organic, inorganic and hybrid structures which are the necessary building blocks for the architecture of various advanced functional materials. The book discusses these innovative methodologies and research strategies, as well as provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of the cutting-edge research on the processing, properties and technology developments of advanced functional materials and their applications. Specifically, Advanced Functional Materials: Compiles the objectives related to functional materials and provides detailed reviews of fundamentals, novel production methods, and frontiers of functional materials, including metalic oxides, conducting polymers, carbon nanotubes, discotic liquid crystalline dimers, calixarenes, crown ethers, chitosan and graphene. Discusses the production and characterization of these materials, while mentioning recent approaches developed as well as their uses and applications for sensitive chemiresistors, optical and electronic materials, solar hydrogen generation, supercapacitors, display and organic light-emitting diodes, functional adsorbents, and antimicrobial and biocompatible layer formation. This volume in the Advanced Materials Book Series includes twelve chapters divided into two main areas: Part 1: Functional Metal Oxides: Architecture, Design and Applications and Part 2: Multifunctional Hybrid Materials: Fundamentals and Frontiers

Book excerpt: This is the first text to cover all aspects of solution processed functional oxide thin-films. Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) comprises all solution based thin- film deposition techniques, which involve chemical reactions of precursors during the formation of the oxide films, i. e. sol-gel type routes, metallo-organic decomposition routes, hybrid routes, etc. While the development of sol-gel type processes for optical coatings on glass by silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide dates from the mid-20th century, the first CSD derived electronic oxide thin films, such as lead zirconate titanate, were prepared in the 1980’s. Since then CSD has emerged as a highly flexible and cost-effective technique for the fabrication of a very wide variety of functional oxide thin films. Application areas include, for example, integrated dielectric capacitors, ferroelectric random access memories, pyroelectric infrared detectors, piezoelectric micro-electromechanical systems, antireflective coatings, optical filters, conducting-, transparent conducting-, and superconducting layers, luminescent coatings, gas sensors, thin film solid-oxide fuel cells, and photoelectrocatalytic solar cells. In the appendix detailed “cooking recipes” for selected material systems are offered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a lucid presentation for chemists, electrical engineers, surface scientists, and solid-state physicists, of the fundamentals underlying the construction of simple and small chemical sensors. The first part of the book is a review of the theoretical background in solid state physics, chemistry and electronics. Semiconductor and solid electrolyte bulk models are reviewed as well as solid/gas and solid/liquid interface models. Membranes and catalysis theory are also covered expansively. The second part is a discussion of more complete sensor devices, their essential components, and of the important developments in this area over the last fifteen to twenty years. The book provides guidance through the multidisciplinary world of chemical sensors. It should be understandable to students with some training in physics and chemistry and a general knowledge of electronics. Finally, comments on economic considerations in the development of new sensor products and suggestionsfor future research and development should be of value to company R&D planners.
