Book excerpt: The growing complexity of modern software systems makes it increasingly difficult to ensure the overall dependability of software-intensive systems. Mastering system complexity requires design techniques that support clear thinking and rigorous validation and verification. Formal design methods together with fault-tolerant design techniques help to achieve this. Therefore, there is a clear need for methods that enable rigorous modeling and the development of complex fault-tolerant systems. This book is an outcome of the workshop on Methods, Models and Tools for Fault Tolerance, MeMoT 2007, held in conjunction with the 6th international conference on Integrated Formal Methods, iFM 2007, in Oxford, UK, in July 2007. The authors of the best workshop papers were asked to enhance and expand their work, and a number of well-established researchers working in the area contributed invited chapters in addition. From the 15 refereed and revised papers presented, 12 are versions reworked from the workshop and 3 papers are invited. The articles are organized in four topical sections on: formal reasoning about fault-tolerant systems and protocols; fault tolerance: modelling in B; fault tolerance in system development process; and fault-tolerant applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing demands for efficiency and product quality plus progress in the integration of automatic control systems in high-cost mechatronic and safety-critical processes, the field of supervision (or monitoring), fault detection and fault diagnosis plays an important role. The book gives an introduction into advanced methods of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD). After definitions of important terms, it considers the reliability, availability, safety and systems integrity of technical processes. Then fault-detection methods for single signals without models such as limit and trend checking and with harmonic and stochastic models, such as Fourier analysis, correlation and wavelets are treated. This is followed by fault detection with process models using the relationships between signals such as parameter estimation, parity equations, observers and principal component analysis. The treated fault-diagnosis methods include classification methods from Bayes classification to neural networks with decision trees and inference methods from approximate reasoning with fuzzy logic to hybrid fuzzy-neuro systems. Several practical examples for fault detection and diagnosis of DC motor drives, a centrifugal pump, automotive suspension and tire demonstrate applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In architecting dependable systems, what is required to improve the overall system robustness is fault tolerance. Many methods have been proposed to this end, the solutions are usually considered late during the design and implementation phases of the software life-cycle (e.g., Java and Windows NT exception handling), thus reducing the effectiveness error and fault handling. Since the system design typically models only normal behaviour of the system while ignoring exceptional ones, the implementation of the system is unable to handle abnormal events. Consequently, the system may fail in unexpected ways due to faults. It has been argued that fault tolerance management during the entire life-cycle improves the overall system robustness and that different classes of threats need to be identified for and dealt with at each distinct phase of software development, depending on the abstraction level of the software system being modelled. This book builds on this trend and investigates how fault tolerance mechanisms can be applied when engineering a software system. In particular, it identifies the new problems arising in this area, introduces the new models to be applied at different abstraction levels, defines methodologies for model-driven engineering of such systems and outlines the new technologies and validation and verification environments supporting this.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Markov modeling has long been accepted as a fundamental and powerful technique for the fault tolerance analysis of mission-critical applications. However, the elaborate computations required have often made Markov modeling too time-consuming to be of practical use on these complex systems. With this hands-on tool, designers can use the Markov modeling technique to analyze safety, reliability, maintainability, and cost-effectiveness factors in the full range of complex systems in use today. Featuring ground-breaking simulation software and a comprehensive reference manual, MARKOV MODELING FOR RELIABILITY ANALYSIS helps system designers surmount the mathematical computations that have previously prevented effective reliability analysis. The text and software compose a valuable self-study tool that is complete with detailed explanations, examples, and a library of Markov models that can be used for experiments and as derivations for new simulation models. The book details how these analyses are conducted, while providing hands-on instruction on how to develop reliability models for the full range of system configurations. Computer-Aided Rate Modeling and Simulation (CARMS) software is an integrated modeling tool that includes a diagram-based environment for model setup, a spreadsheet like interface for data entry, an expert system link for automatic model construction, and an interactive graphic interface for displaying simulation results."

Book excerpt: This timely resource offers a comprehensive, unified treatment of the techniques and practice of systems reliability and failure prevention, without the use of advanced mathematics. Featuring numerous, in-depth real-world examples, the book distills the author's many years of practical experience in designing and testing critical systems. The book helps you set reliability requirements for a new product, monitor compliance with these requirements during development and later life cycle phases, account for software failures in an integrated reliability assessment, and allocate a fixed reliability improvement budget to guide decisions by cost considerations and trade-offs. then focuses on the organizational causes of failure, a critical topic that rarely receives attention. It thoroughly examines the techniques for reducing and preventing failures that affect system reliability - conservative design, the use of analytical tools and procedures, extensive testing and redundancy - and discusses their capabilities and limitations. Moreover, this comprehensive reference covers the formulation of functional and reliability requirements for critical systems, and concludes with examples from communication networks, aircraft and missile systems, the process industry and satellite missions.
