Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced English Grammar and Composition This book has been prepared especially for use in the intermediate and higher schools in the Philippine Islands. It presents a thorough study of the essentials of English Grammar and the elements of English Composition. The book is characterized by its use of the inductive method, the large number of illustrations, the extent and variety of application of each grammatical fact developed, the emphasis placed upon the verb and upon other features of special difficulty to the foreign learner of the language, and the development of the elements of composition with, and based upon, the topics in grammar. Exercises in word formation, also, are a valuable feature of the book, showing the relation of the more important parts of speech and the formation of important groups of words, and greatly aiding the pupil in learning and correctly using an extensive vocabulary. The book consists of three parts: Part I contains a brief review of the parts of speech and the elements of the sentence, with a variety of exercises in composition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Old English: Elementary Grammar and Reference Grammar The primary purpose of the authors of the Elements of Old English has been to produce an introductory book which will facilitate and expedite the teaching and study of Old English in such classes as their own, composed of graduate and advanced undergraduate students. To attain this object we have, in the Elementary Grammar, selected and arranged the essential paradigms, in the order of their relative importance, into twenty-four chapters designed as progressive lessons. In this part of the book the less frequent variant forms have been omitted. All the grammatical information necessary to enable a student to begin reading freely is contained in the first seven chapters. Each chapter includes a reading selection adapted to the advancing capacity of the student, and accompanied by notes explaining those forms which have not yet been presented systematically. In the chapters the primitive and prehistoric Old English sound changes have been explained more fully on a historical and phonetic basis than is usual in such a book as this, partly in order to clarify and rationalize the apparent irregularities of the inflections, and partly in order to acquaint elementary students with the methods and principles of the historical study of language and linguistic change. In the Reference Grammar is given a systematic and ordered treatment of Old English phonology and morphology which serves to bridge the gap between the Elementary Grammar and such standard grammars as those of Cosijn, Sievers, Wright, and Biilbring. It was originally intended to include a considerable body of texts with notes and glossary; but to do this at present would render the cost of the book prohibitive. The Elementary Grammar has been used in mimeographed editions at the Universities of Chicago, Michigan, and Wisconsin, at North western University, and at other universities and colleges. It has been twice re-written, and is now issued with the changes suggested by experience and criticism. Further criticisms and corrections from instructors and students will be welcomed. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of English Grammar The author wishes to enter a plea for a certain amount of liberty in the interpretations which students may make of various grammatical constructions. The instances in which legitimate difference of opinion may exist are, it is true, relatively infrequent; yet such instances actually do occur. The student, for example, who analyzes the sen tence We asked for bread as consisting of the subject We, the verb asked for, and the object bread, should not be utterly condemned, since his logic after all is perfectly sound. /the preposition for, which 1s a relational or link word, indicating the relation between asked and bread, is certainly as closely united to one word as to the other, and therefore may as appropriately be grouped with one as with the other. The student who is capable of such a logical analysis should be given due credit and encourage ment for it. The question as to how much independence of judgment pupils in general should be allowed and to what extent uniformity of terminology in class-room work is necessary must be left for every teacher to decide ac cording to the special circumstances of each case. Com plete uniformity, however, at the expense of an inquiring and independent attitude of mind on the part of the stu dents, is certainly too dearly bought to justify itself. The author is personally of the opinion that nothing is lost and a good deal is gained by a frank confession that our system of grammatical classification and terminology is to a con siderable extent arbitrary and conventional, and that in many instances other classification and terminology would be just as reasonable as those which we follow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of English Grammar: With Suggestions for Composition Work I'r may be felt by many that there should be some reasonable justification for adding another text-book on grammar to the long list of such books already before the teaching public; and it is not without a constant recognition of this fact that this book has been prepared. It would seem almost impossible at this late day to present anything very strikingly new in a science as old as that of the grammar of our language. Not only has the field been worked over and over, but the field itself is by nature limited. Both from their logical and their historical points of view the grammatical subtleties of our tongue have been ex plained by one author or another in almost every conceivable way, and about all that has been left to the student of grammar is a choice among authorities. It is not the purpose of this book to add anything new along these line's. As its name indicates, it is an elementary treatise of the subject'. It is intended for use in the upper grades of grammar schools, where it is believed that the teaching of gram mar is found most difficult. The only excuse for being that can be claimed for the book must be upon the basis of its order of arrangement, its method, its simplicity and clearness. In other words, whatever merits it may have are fundamentally pedagogic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Grammar: The First Book of English Grammar; Prepared as a Text-Book for Public Schools, and for the Primary Classes of High Schools and Academies In the revision of his. Manuscripts, 'the author placed at the commencement, The Corrections of the First Part. The Second, Third, and Fourth Parts, which make up the remaining portion of the Elements of Grammar, were written as a connecting link between Part First and the Second Book of Grammar; which latter was originally pre pared for the use of classes that had already made consider able progress ih this science. The Third and Fourth Parts were completely re-written, and every sentence submitted to a critical examination. Thus revised, the manuscripts have been 'used in the instruo tion of every grade of pupils, for nearly ten years; and such has. Been the interest they have awakened, as to make the study of Grammar a, recreation, and the hour of its recitation one of almost unmingled delight. To this interest, the system of symbols has greatly con tributed; and'to their use the attention of teachers is invited. An experience of years has only strengthened the conviction, that they are to Grammar what figures are to Arithmetic, and diagrams to Geometry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Grammar: With Comprehensive Outlines, and a Concise and Progressive System of Analysis and Parsing, for Schools and Colleges Thoughtful teachers have long felt the need of a text-book on Eng lish Grammar which would accord with the present state of Philology and Mental Science. The grammars in use seem to have been pre pared without careful investigation. The errors Of former ages are repeated. Thought and language are confounded, and the definitions are merely descriptions of prominent characteristics, not of features common and essential. In order to rescue English Grammar from this empirical state and reduce it to a Science, the author has devoted much thought and labor to the subject. The principles contained in this volume have been developed and tested in the recitation room and the study, and have been adopted only after careful consideration. The nature of language is important as a conditioning fact. Speech is a natural endowment, but language is artificial, being evolved from a few roots, and elaborated and improved as the race have advanced in the social scale. The vocables and forms of expression are conventional, being shaped by physiological and social laws. Language and thought are not identical. Mental acts are momentary; their formulation occupies time. Thinking in words is a double act: it includes the conception of the thought and also the conception Of its expression. Language is therefore the embodiment of a mental act in words, and the vernacular, the laws of thought and the general usage of cultivated persons become the test of accuracy. The province of grammar 18 another important fact. Grammar is not the science of language; it treats only of a certain phase of language. Lexicology treats of the material element, of words in an isolated condition; Exegesis, of the expository element, of forms and modes of expression no longer current. Grammar treats of the formal element and investigates the principles, relations and forms Of words combined into sentences. Logic is sometimes called general grammar. Logic is the art of reasoning, but grammar combines words into propositions for the use of the dialectician, points out the connection between ideas and words, and weaves into enduring forms thoughts and sentiments which other wise would die with their conception.
