Book excerpt: While the business aspect of an optometrist's practice may come second to patient care, optometrists today are faced with greater competition for new patients and income. This updated guide shows readers how to work smarter through effective practice management to offset reduced earnings due to fixed reimbursements of managed care and competition from 1-800 contact lens companies and chains selling discount frames and lenses. Drawing on over 40 years of experience, the author presents practical strategies for addressing the problems of day-to-day practice, and explains how to develop business and marketing plans without detracting from the optometrist's professional image. This edition features an increased focus on how to work with partners (including how to exit gracefully from a partnership), how to start a part-time practice, and how to be creative in practice. Authored by an expert in the field of practice management and optometry for the most effective, realistic advice and guidance. Concise, readable text synthesizes the author's 40-plus years of expertise in optometric practice. Necessary business and marketing skills are presented in a way that is compatible the optometrist's professional image. Tips and tools are provided on how to approach the client as both a consumer and a patient. Helpful information for students or optometrists who own or are planning to own their own practice. Completely re-written and updated. 4 new chapters cover topics such as practice locations, part-time practicing, managed care, management of un-met vision needs, and the office of the future. An increased focus on how to work with partners, including how to exit gracefully from a partnership. Having performed over 3,000 consultations and coaching sessions with hundreds of optometry practices across the country, I've discovered one irrefutable truth. Your staff is your #1 asset, and a leader's ability to communicate, motivate and "lead" their team is critical to the sustained success of the organization. The idea behind writing this book was to use my consulting experience to give leaders and managers of eye care practices the tools and skills they need to successfully lead their teams. Staff management is easily the #1 challenge I hear from ODs and their managers, and it's been my observation that many leaders lack the leadership skills to get the best performance out of the employees they manage. In fact, poor leadership skills lead to most of the problems I hear pertaining to staff. In 90 percent of my consults involving staff issues, the problem can easily be traced back to one of five areas. This book, written in story format, takes you through these five areas of leadership. Being an effective leader is easier than you may imagine, once you know what it is that you need to be doing - and anyone can do this! In this book you will learn how to: -Clarify your vision and goals -Effectively communicate with your team -Empower your team -Identify your team's strengths and weaknesses -Develop your coaching skills -Hold people accountable -Become a great leader -And much, much more

Book excerpt: Purpose. By studying various practice management strategies and conducting a survey, current practice management courses and methods of study at 14 United States schools of optometry were analyzed. Data was then used to determine how various methods prepared students for practice management in a private practice setting. Results of the study are anticipated to assist practice management educators better prepare optometric students. Methods. A nine-question survey was conducted among optometrists who had graduated within the last ten years. The practice settings of the subjects included private practice, corporate care, institutional (Veterans Affairs, Indian Health Services, and military facilities), and academia. The survey was sent to all American Optometric State Associations, all U.S. Colleges of Optometry, and was posted on optometric Facebook websites. Optometric physicians ranked common practice management instructional techniques according to how beneficial each was, as perceived by the participant. Results were collected through the survey engine Checkbox. Results. One hundred and nine optometrists responded to the survey. All were current practicing physicians. An average of two practice management courses are currently offered at United States Colleges of Optometry. A majority (52.29%) of participants’ perceived an adequate level of preparation for private practice at the time of graduation, while 44.95% felt they were unprepared. Conclusion. The survey data revealed the most effective techniques analyzed were lectures presented by optometric guest speakers and business consultants.
