Book excerpt: Based on many years of hands-on teaching experience involving students and practicing engineers alike, this text offers an ideal introduction to the design and performance of turbomachinery. Pumps, compressors, and turbines are described in detail, with emphasis on their key features and the flow equations relevant to each part of the machine. Experimental data are presented to aid understanding. Also covered are boundary layer and computational techniques for flow prediction, stability limits, and structural and modal analysis of blades and rotors. Test bed, laboratory, and workshop procedures for turbomachinery development together with instrumentation issues are also covered, drawing on the authors' wide experience. Fully illustrated and comprehensive in its treatment of turbomachinery types, Introduction to Turbomachinery provides the most up-to-date account of the subject for final-year undergraduates or new graduates beginning a study of turbomachinery, as well as a refresher and reference text for established practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mechanical engineer with a Pennsylvania turbomachinery company, A ungier describes his own system and strategy for designing and analyzing centrifugal compressor aerodynamics. To address the novice as well as the experienced in the field, he presents the basic thermodynamic and fluid dynamic principles, empirical models, and key numerical methods that form the basis of his methods. His strategy, or design practice, he found harder to describe because it involves a process of reasoning rather than following an established set of principles. He recognizes that his is only one of many possible methods, but makes no effort to compare or contrast his with any other.

Book excerpt: The performance and flow structure in an unshrouded impeller of approximately 4:1 pressure ratio is synthesized on the basis of a detailed analysis of 3D viscous CFD results and aerodynamic measurements. A good data match was obtained between CFD and measurements using laser anemometry and pneumatic probes. This solidified the role of the CFD model as a reliable representation of the impeller internal flow structure and integrated performance. Results are presented showing the loss production and secondary flow structure in the impeller. The results indicate that while the overall impeller efficiency is high, the impeller shroud static pressure recovery potential is underdeveloped leading to a performance degradation in the downstream diffusing element. Thus, a case is made for a follow-on impeller parametric design study to improve the flow quality. A strategy for aerodynamic performance enhancement is outlined and an estimate of the gain in overall impeller efficiency that might be realized through improvements to the relative diffusion process is provided.

This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rotor dynamics is an important branch of dynamics that deals with behavior of rotating machines ranging from very large systems like power plant rotors, for example, a turbogenerator, to very small systems like a tiny dentist’s drill, with a variety of rotors such as pumps, compressors, steam/gas turbines, motors, turbopumps etc. as used for example in process industry, falling in between. The speeds of these rotors vary in a large range, from a few hundred RPM to more than a hundred thousand RPM. Complex systems of rotating shafts depending upon their specific requirements, are supported on different types of bearings. There are rolling element bearings, various kinds of fluid film bearings, foil and gas bearings, magnetic bearings, to name but a few. The present day rotors are much lighter, handle a large amount of energy and fluid mass, operate at much higher speeds, and therefore are most susceptible to vibration and instability problems. This have given rise to several interesting physical phenomena, some of which are fairly well understood today, while some are still the subject of continued investigation. Research in rotor dynamics started more than one hundred years ago. The progress of the research in the early years was slow. However, with the availability of larger computing power and versatile measurement technologies, research in all aspects of rotor dynamics has accelerated over the past decades. The demand from industry for light weight, high performance and reliable rotor-bearing systems is the driving force for research, and new developments in the field of rotor dynamics. The symposium proceedings contain papers on various important aspects of rotor dynamics such as, modeling, analytical, computational and experimental methods, developments in bearings, dampers, seals including magnetic bearings, rub, impact and foundation effects, turbomachine blades, active and passive vibration control strategies including control of instabilities, nonlinear and parametric effects, fault diagnostics and condition monitoring, and cracked rotors. This volume is of immense value to teachers, researchers in educational institutes, scientists, researchers in R&D laboratories and practising engineers in industry.
