Book excerpt: Small gas turbine liner cooling is especially difficult due to the low combustor air flow and relatively large flame tube areas. Therefore, it is desirable to increase the cooling potential of the cooling air by application of combined convective-film cooling. Its advantage must be balanced carefully against the disadvantage of increased weight and production cost. The large number of variable parameters of a combined cooling configuration requires a computer model which allows the simulation of different cooling approaches. To verify this, model tests with various configurations were conducted in a 2D-cooling rig. Good agreement between measured and calculated liner temperatures could be achieved. Thus, the model is suitable to show under which conditions a marked decrease of wall temperature can be reached compared with the case of straight film cooling under the same conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A joint Army/NASA program was conducted to design, fabricate, and test an advanced, reverse-flow, small gas turbine combustor using a compliant metal enhanced (CME) convection wall cooling concept. The objectives of this effort were to develop a design method (basic design data base and analysis) for the CME cooling technique and tben demonstrate its application to an advanced cycle, small, reverse-flow combustor with 3000 F (1922 K) burner outlet temperature (BOT). The CME concept offers significant improvements in wall cooling effectiveness resulting in a large reduction in cooling air requirements. Therefore, more air is available for control of burner outlet temperature pattern in addition to the benefit of improved efficiency, reduced emissions, and smoke levels. Rig test results demonstrated the benefits and viability of the CME concept meeting or exceeding the aerothermal performance and liner wall temperature characteristics of similar lower temperature-rise combustors, achieving 0.15 pattern factor at 3000 F (1922 K) BOT, while utilizing approximately 80 percent less cooling air than conventional, film-cooled combustion systems.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the Phase I ERDA High-Temperature Turbine Technology (HTTT) Program was to provide a ''Program and System Definition'' of the three-phase program which would culminate in the testing of a Technology Readiness Vehicle (TRV) at the end of a six-year period. The TRV is designed for use in a combined cycle using coal-derived fuels at a firing temperature of 2600°F; growth capability to 3000°F is projected. The Phase I results reported are based on a 2600°F gas turbine burning coal-derived fuels. The following major areas are covered: overall plant design descriptions; systems design descriptions; turbine subsystem design; combustor design; phase II proposed program; and phase III proposed program. Details regarding final results of each of these areas are presented. It is concluded that the water-cooled gas turbine in combined cycle has been shown to be capable of extremely attractive levels of performance, both in terms of efficiency and specific output. Coupled with the ability to tolerate a wide range of coal-derived fuels with minimum fuel treatment, an extremely attractive system is presented for the generation of electric power. Future technology development of the high-firing-temperature water-cooled gas turbine is expected to result in the commercial introduction of this concept in combined cycles by the late 1980's or early 1990's.

Book Synopsis Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines by : D.F.G. Durão

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been said and written about the abilities of modern instrumentation to help solve problems of combustion in engines. In the main, however, the design and fabr ication of combustion chambers continues to be based on extrapolation of exper ience gained from use and rig tests, with little input from advanced techniques such as those based on optical diagnotics. At the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to design better combustion chambers without knowledge of the relevant flow processes. Thus, the future must involve improved understanding which, in turn, will require detailed measurements of velocity, temperature and concentration. The need to narrow the gap between current industrial practice and the acquisition and implementation of improved techniques motivated the organization of the Advanced Study Institute upon which this volume is based. This Institute on Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines was arranged to display the needs of industry and the possibilities made available by modern instrumentation and, at the same time, to make clear the relative advantages of optical and probe techniques. Held at Vimeiro during the period from 13 to 26 September, 1987, the Institute was attended by 120 participants and 16 invited lecturers.

Download or read book Advanced Low-Emissions Catalytic Combustor Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Task I of the Phase I program, six catalytic combustor concepts were defined. Analysis and evaluation of these six concepts were made under Task II. Major design considerations included low emissions, performance, safety, durability, installations, operations and development. On the basis of these considerations the two most promising concepts were selected. Refined analysis and preliminary design work was conducted on these two most promising concepts in Task III. The selected concepts were required to fit within the combustor chamber dimensions of the reference engine. This is achieved by using a dump diffuser discharging into a plenum chamber between the compressor discharge and the turbine inlet, with the combustors overlaying the prediffuser and the rear of the compressor. To enhance maintainability, the outer combustor case for each concept is designed to translate forward for accessibility to the catalytic reactor, liners and high pressure turbine area. The catalytic reactor is self-contained with air-cooled canning on a resilient mounting. Both selected concepts employed integrated engine-starting approaches to raise the catalytic reactor up to operating conditions. Advanced liner schemes are used to minimize required cooling air. The two selected concepts respectively employ fuel-rich initial thermal reaction followed by rapid quench and subsequent fuel-lean catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide, and, fuel-lean thermal reaction of some fuel in a continuously operating pilot combustor with fuel-lean catalytic reaction of remaining fuel in a radially-staged main combustor.
Book Synopsis Effect of Effusion Cooling Pattern Near the Dilution Hole for a Double-Walled Combustor Liner by : Adam Shrager
Download or read book Effect of Effusion Cooling Pattern Near the Dilution Hole for a Double-Walled Combustor Liner written by Adam Shrager and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas turbine engines are an important technology for power generation and aircraft propulsion due to their relatively high efficiencies compared to other methods of power generation. To further improve the efficiency, pressure ratios in modern gas turbine engines continue to rise, which also causes higher temperatures in the turbine and combustor. As such, advanced cooling methods are necessary to protect the engine components from the high temperatures that occur in the engine and to maintain durability. Modern combustors commonly use a double-walled liner with impingement and effusion cooling plates. The impingement cooling enhances the backside cooling, while the effusion cooling creates a protective film on the external surface. In addition, modern combustor liners also include large dilution holes to promote mixing of the air and fuel in a process that reduces NOx emissions. However, the dilution jets interrupt the cooling film, making it difficult to cool the combustor walls, especially near the dilution holes. This study evaluates the surface cooling effectiveness and flowfield for a double-walled combustor liner with impingement and effusion cooling as well as a row of large dilution holes. The effusion cooling hole pattern was varied with three different hole patterns in the region surrounding the dilution holes including: no additional effusion holes, effusion holes blowing radially outward from the dilution holes, and effusion holes blowing radially inward toward the dilution holes. The momentum flux ratio of the dilution jets and approaching freestream turbulence were also varied. The effusion hole patterns with addition effusion holes surrounding the dilution holes improved the cooling effectiveness through in-hole convection. For each panel geometry, increasing the momentum flux ratio generally increased effectiveness levels with diminishing returns. In addition, decreasing the approaching freestream turbulence intensity increased the effectiveness across the panels. Flowfield measurements showed that the outward blowing effusion jets created a vortex that transported a significant amount of freestream fluid toward the surface at the leading edge of the dilution hole.
