Book excerpt: Since the last century, ceramics have become essential to modern society and our daily lives. They have become an indispensable product to many industries, especially within the fields of electronics, automobiles, medicine, and leisure. Japanese ceramic technologies and products are highly sophisticated and world renown, and ceramic products have long contributed to Japanese society. The true significance of ceramics to modern society however, is not well understood. This book describes in detail the background to and objective of the development, materials, manufacturing processes, functions and future prospects of a number of ceramic products. Not merely about the science and technology of ceramic manufacturing, the book is about the products themselves, as it tries to clarify how ceramics continue to contribute to our lives. It is the first such work to show advanced ceramic products in detail, from the technologies used to their application, and can be seen as a kind of illustrated reference book for modern advanced ceramic products as it is filled with easy-to-understand illustrations and photos. By including past and current product technologies, the editors hope the book will serve to guide engineers and the manufacturing sector toward a bright future of innovations for the benefit of us all.

This book is composed of nine chapters that cover the morphological and biochemical aspects of cell growth and development. The opening chapter deals with the principles and phenomena of morphogenesis characteristic of ciliate protozoa Stentor. The succeeding chapters examine the phenomena of symmetrization in amphibian, birds, reptiles, and fish, and discuss comparative biochemical studies on amphibian and invertebrate. These topics are followed by surveys on the histochemical and morpholopgical studies of limb morphogenesis in vertebrates. Other chapters are devoted to embryonic and larval development, as well as the regeneration in certain group of animals. This book is directed primarily to developmental biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1959 Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee is pleased to pre sent the papers of the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. We are fortunate to have had the University of California at Berkeley, Ca!., as our host for the fifth national meeting of this kind. The move to the West Coast for this past Cryogenic Engineering Conference was prompted in part by the large concentration of missile activities which are to be found there. Recognition of cryogenic operations and techniques in the mis sile field is given in many of the included papers. The University of California was certainly wen suited for such a meeting as this because it was here that much early work was done in cryogenics. This pioneering in cryogenics is still evident today in the operation of the 72-in. bub ble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference salutes the missile industry and the cryogenic pioneers of yesterday and today at the University of California. Special thanks must go to Dr. D. N. Lyon from the Low-Temperature Laboratory of the University of California, who as chairman of the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee has worked tirelessly to increase the stature of this conference. vii ACKNOWLEDGMENT The Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee is deeply grateful for the continued support and interest of the following organizations who made the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering Conference possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salt tectonics is the study of how and why salt structures evolve and the three-dimensional forms that result. A fascinating branch of geology in itself, salt tectonics is also vitally important to the petroleum industry. Covering the entire scale from the microscopic to the continental, this textbook is an unrivalled consolidation of all topics related to salt tectonics: evaporite deposition and flow, salt structures, salt systems, and practical applications. Coverage of the principles of salt tectonics is supported by more than 600 color illustrations, including 200 seismic images captured by state-of-the-art geophysical techniques and tectonic models from the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory at the University of Texas, Austin. These combine to provide a cohesive and wide-ranging insight into this extremely visual subject. This is the definitive practical handbook for professional geologists and geophysicists in the petroleum industry, an invaluable textbook for graduate students, and a reference textbook for researchers in various geoscience fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Tilly Edinger's first published paper dealt with a brain cast-in more exact terms an endocast of the cranial cavity-of Noth08auru8, a Triassic relative of the plesiosaurs. With this she embarked on a working lifetime of devotion to paleoneurology, a field of study that she was to transform. A daughter of the famous neurologist Ludwig Edinger, it was appropriate as well as fortunate that her early interest in fossil vertebrates should have become focused upon the recovery of such information concerning the history of the central nervous system as could be obtained from fossil material. Her father evidently had no direct influence upon her choice of· this then obscure and difficult subject, although within the family circle she presumably absorbed from him some appreciation of neoneurology. Indirectly, however, through his accumulation in Frankfurt of an outstanding collection of recent brains, he provided the comparative material essential to her studies during the years she spent there. Early in her career she published Die FOBsilen Gehirne (1929). Here was gathered together for the first time nearly all the widely scattered information on the topic. It had an immediate effect. As one author justly remarked, this "invaluable review . . . serves not only as a basis for continuing and systematizing research on brain casts but also as an indication of the more serious gaps in present knowledge" (Simpson, 1933). The bibliography appended to it listed 250 titles. A bibliography she published in 1937 included 160 additional titles.
