A number of the chapters were published in The Sunday School Times as a' series of articles on The Adult Class. The chap ter on The Modern Bible Study and The Adult Class appeared in The Biblical World, May, 1903. We are indebted to these journals for permission to reprint these articles. The lesson courses accompanying the book as separate pamphlets are a selection made by the Editorial Board of The Pilgrim Press from a larger number presented. We wish to acknowledge our obli gation to Rev. H. L. Wriston, Rev. Edward M. Noyes and Prof. H. M. Burr for permission to use the courses we have incorporated in the pamphlet publica tions. The book and the courses owe much to a wide correspondence with persons engaged in adult class work. We wish here to express our gratitude, not only to those whose courses we used, but to many others, for courteous and often painstaking answers to our inquiries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks for Bible Classes Now both of these are true ideas, and they are the principal ideas belonging to the outward rites of Christianity. For this reason, as well as because the name has been in common use for many hundred years, we apply the word sacrament to designate these ordinances, though it is not given to them in the Bible. It is convenient to have such a name, for we often want to speak of these rites in common and this is an appropriate name, for it indicates their chief features. But we must remember, that as it is not a Bible name, we cannot infer anything from it, except what We find taught in the Bible itself about the things that are meant by it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks: Bible Classes and Private Students Christianity is in its essential nature remedial; it is not a mere benefit bestowed to increase the wellbeing of men; it is a deliverance, and indeed the only deliverance, from a most terrible and deadly evil; and that evil is, throughout the pages of Revelation, described as having its root and chief part in sin. The founder of Christianity was called Jesus, because He should save His people from their sin; He was hailed as "the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world;" He declared that He came to call sinners to the kingdom of God; and it is pro claimed as a faithful saying among His disciples "that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners." Entirely consistent with this are the anticipations and promises of the Old Testament. In the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms, sin is recognised as the radical and greatest evil from which man needs to be saved. Yet the Bible gives no didactic explanation of what sin is, but from the very outset of its teaching assumes that to be known. Just as the inspired writers do not think it needful to begin with a definition of God or a proof of His existence, as little do they count this necessary in regard to sin. A., is sending forth this book as the official teacher training manual for Negro Baptist Sunday Schools of America, and we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to secure the services of Dr. S. N. Vass as author - a Sunday school expert and a Bible scholar. Dr. Vass has had more than a quarter of a century's experience in Sunday school and Bible work. This book is the first one written by Dr. Vass bearing on this work, and shows the secret of his wonderful grasp upon the Bible. If there were no other features to the book but the Bible instruction, it would richly repay the price at which we are selling the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks: For Bible Classes and Private Students This book is an endeavour to show, in brief compass, that the main points of Christian Doctrine, as taught among us, rest directly on Scripture, and are vitally connected with one another. The substance of the book has been repeatedly given orally to audiences of Christian Workers and Students of practical Christianity. It has, in that form, found acceptance among them; as also with the members of the Y.W.C.A. when monthly portions of it appeared in the pages of their Magazine. It is now for the first time published, in the hope that it may reach a still larger circle of Christian Teachers and Bible Students who desire to see for themselves how Evangelical Doctrine stands upon a strictly Scriptural basis, and is worthy of all believing acceptance and reasonable exposition.
