A grande fertilidade destas terras, acertadamente proclamada em tempos passados, nao mais se justifica nos dias atuais. A prova disto esta em que a producao media de milho nestas terras mal se aproxima da media do Estado, a despeito do uso relativamente grande de sementes hibridas. Nos Estados Unidos o consumo de adubos aumentou com o progresso no plantio do Milho hibrido, que exige terras mais ferteis. no Estado e no municipio em apreco isto nao vem ocorrendo, o que em parte se justifica pelo alto preco dos fertilizantes do mercado. E necessario que se aumente o numero de experimentos de adubacao para se poder indicar uma adubacao para se poder indicar uma adubacao mais segura, que propicie maior aumento por unidade de fertilizantes empregados. Com este objetivo foram instalados no minicipio de Ribeirao Preto, em terra roxa, 27 experimentos fatoriais N P K , 3x3x3, de cujos resultados podem ser tiradas as seguintes conclusoes: a) e o nitrogenio o elemento que propiciou maior aumento na producao do milho, nos experimentos analisados. A dose mais economica e a de 50 kg de N por hectare com um aumento medio de 730 kg de graos, embora a dose de 80 kg tenha dado um aumento de 1 036 kg por hectare. O nitrogenio reagiu favoravelmente em 23 dos 27 experimentos instalados; b) o fosforo mostrou reacao bem menor e mais oscilante do que o nitrogenio. Para a media dos experimentos constatou-se um...

Book excerpt: In Brazil, sugarcane ethanol supplied, in 2009, 17.6 % of the energy for land transportation (excluding railroads)and about 55% of the total energy supplied by liquid fuel for Otto cycle engines. Besides the lower production costs ethanol produced from sugarcane in Brazil has another important advantage: in Central-South Brazil only 1 unit of fossil energy is used for each 8-9 units of energy produced by ethanol from sugarcane. Carbon emissions reduction also benefits from sugarcane ethanol: for each cubic meter of ethanol used as fuel, there is net saving of around 2 t CO2 not emitted to the atmosphere while, at the same time, no SO2 is emitted. Sugarcane was introduced in Brazil in 1532. The "Brazilian model" of producing concomitantly sugar and ethanol, brought important technical benefits and made possible an outstanding increase in the competitiveness in the international market for sugar and ethanol. Today about 50% of the sucrose of sugarcane produced in the country is directed to the production of sugar while another half is used to produce Ethanol. Industrial and academic R&D has helped to increase the productivity of ethanol steadily over the past 35 years, at a rate of 3.2% per year. Productivity gains implied savings of planted area by a factor of 2.6. In 2009/2010 the area planted with sugarcane for Ethanol production was 4.2 Mha, amounting to 1% of the total arable land available in Brazil. About 60% of the Ethanol produced in Brazil comes from the State of Sao Paulo, where the productivity is the highest (around 86 t/ha.year). Most of the recent expansion is happening in the center-west region of the country, in degraded pasture lands. The FAPESP Program for Research on Bioenergy, BIOEN, aims at articulating public and private R&D, using academic and industrial laboratories to advance and apply knowledge in fields related to ethanol production in Brazil. The BIOEN Program has a solid core for supporting academic exploratory research activities that will generate new knowledge and form scientists and professionals essential for advancing industry capacity in ethanol related technologies. On top of this, BIOEN includes partnerships with industry for cooperative R&D activities between industrial and academic laboratories, which are to be co-funded by FAPESP and industry.Federal agencies, such as CNPq, will also co-fund the research.

Angola is also the world's fourth largest producer of rough diamonds in terms of value, with the potential to become one of the leading global diamond producers. In addition to oil and diamonds, the country is well endowed with agricultural resources which remain mostly untapped. However, despite the country's significant natural wealth, a prolonged civil war, the rapid development of the oil sector, and the policies pursued after Independence in 1975 have left the Angolan economy in a unique situation, characterized by very uneven indicators of development. The Angolan economy is now experiencing massive oil windfall gains that are expected to last throughout the next decade. Since oil rents are to a large part concentrated in the public sector, the question of how the oil revenue should be spent and distributed across present and future generations becomes key to any economic development strategy. This study identifies six core areas where a strategic approach for the development of a broad-based growth strategy is required: (i) the incomplete transition to a market economy; (ii) macroeconomic management; (iii) governance and transparency in the management of the mineral wealth; (iv) the business environment; (v) agriculture; and (vi) public service delivery to the poor.
