This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject matter of this book is not entirely new in that much has been written about the state of the interfacial chemistry in other textbooks. However, the authors have found that there is really a need for a book which can lead an investigator, a student, or a beginn er through the in-depth understanding and descriptions involved in the derivations and usage of the adsorption equations based on the unified concept of the Gibbs surface excess. The derivation of the original Gibbs equation for the liquid interface has been amplified with reformulations and criticisms. Attempts have been frequently made to relate the surface excess quantities with the thermodynamic properties of the physically defined interfacial phase. In the last two decades, useful applications of the Gibbs equations have been made for the study of adsorption at solid-liquid as weIl as liquid-gas interfaces formed in the presence of the multicomponent solutions in the bulk. These recent treatments become useful for the experimental studies of the adsorption of electrolytes and interfacial properties related to neutral and charged monolayers. The consistency of the experimental results with those to be expected from the theories of the electrical double layer needs careful examination. An attempt has been made to present in a single volume all these developments based on the unified concept of the Gibbs surface excess. The study of the adsorption from solution is of considerable importance in the field of biology and in many other branches of applied science.

Book Synopsis Fluid Interfaces by : Eduardo Guzmán
Download or read book Fluid Interfaces written by Eduardo Guzmán and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid interfaces are promising candidates for confining different types of materials, e.g., polymers, surfactants, colloids, and even small molecules, to be used in designing new functional materials with reduced dimensionality. The development of such materials requires a deepening of the physicochemical bases underlying the formation of layers at fluid interfaces as well as on the characterization of their structures and properties. This is of particular importance because the constraints associated with the assembly of materials at the interface lead to the emergence of equilibrium and features of dynamics in the interfacial systems, which are far removed from those conventionally found in traditional materials. This Special Issue is devoted to studies on the fundamental and applied aspects of fluid interfaces, and attempts to provide a comprehensive perspective on the current status of the research field.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Interface and Colloid Science by : J. Lyklema
Download or read book Fundamentals of Interface and Colloid Science written by J. Lyklema and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-07-10 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Interface and Colloid Science (FICS) is a standard reference work with an educational nature. The emphasis is on the basic facts and phenomena, which are systematically explained. FICS aims to make interface and colloid science accessible to a wide audience. Interface and colloid science is an important and fascinating field, but one that is often overlooked and undervalued. It has applications as diverse as agriculture, mineral dressing, oil recovery, industrial chemistry, medical science and biotechnology.A deductive approach is followed, with systems of growing complexity being treated as the book progresses. Volume I: Fundamentals (1st ed. 1991, 2nd ed. 1993) reviews the physical chemistry required to understand current literature on interfacial and colloid science. The volume starts from first principles and gradually increases the level. Volume II: Solid-Liquid Interfaces (1995) treats the subject systematically for the first time, including adsorption, double layers and electronkinetics. Volume III: Interface Tension covers interfacial tensions, monolayers and wetting. - Accessible to a wide audience without a detailed knowledge of physics and chemistry - Complex mathematical derivations are kept to a minimum - Treats interfacial and colloidal phenomena from first principles (advanced command of physics and chemistry not required) - Takes the reader from elementary to expert level - Acts as a reference and a textbook - Contains extensive and detailed cumulative subject index
Book Synopsis Adsorption From Solution by : R. H. Ottewill
Download or read book Adsorption From Solution written by R. H. Ottewill and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption From Solution discusses the significance of adsorption behavior in thermodynamic terms, with emphasis on the interplay between enthalpic and entropic contributions to the free energy. This book examines the role of simple models and of elementary thermodynamic and statistical mechanical arguments in relation to the concept of surface phase. Organized into 22 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the theoretical model for the solid/liquid interface. This text then proceeds with a discussion of the general thermodynamic treatment of adsorption from mixed solvents, which is designed to apply in situations where adsorbed species may be regarded as distinct from their bulk counterparts. Other chapters discuss the adsorption from solutions of various interfaces of liquid/gas, liquid/liquid, or liquid/solid. The final chapter deals with the roles of adsorption from solution in controlling other phenomena, such as liquid–liquid displacement, wetting, and the forces between colloidal particles. Physicists, chemists, and materials scientists will find this book extremely useful.

Download or read book COSMO-RS written by Andreas Klamt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-07-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COSMO-RS technique is a novel method for predicting the thermodynamic properties of pure and mixed fluids which are important in many areas, ranging from chemical engineering to drug design. COSMO-RS, From Quantum Chemistry to Fluid Phase Thermodynamics and Drug Design is about this novel technology, which has recently proven to be the most reliable and efficient tool for the prediction of vapour-liquid equilibria. In contrast to group contribution methods, which depend on an extremely large number of experimental data, COSMO-RS calculates the thermodynamic data from molecular surface polarity distributions, resulting from quantum chemical calculations of the individual compounds in the mixture. In this book, the author cleverly combines a vivid overview of the partly demanding theoretical steps with a deeper analysis of their scientific background and justification. Aimed at theoretical chemists, computational chemists, physical chemists, chemical engineers, thermodynamicists as well as students, academic and industrial experts, COSMO-RS, From Quantum Chemistry to Fluid Phase Thermodynamics and Drug Design provides a novel viewpoint to anyone looking to gain more insight into the theory and potential of the unique method, COSMO-RS. - The only book currently available on COSMO-RS technique - Provides a novel viewpoint for the scientific understanding and for the practical quantitative treatment of fluid phase thermodynamics - Includes illustrative examples of the COSMOtherm program
