Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of Bridget Riley’s major exhibition at David Zwirner in London in the summer of 2014, this fully illustrated catalogue offers intimate explorations of paintings and works on paper produced by the legendary British artist over the past fifty years, focusing specifically on her recurrent use of the stripe motif. Riley has devoted her practice to actively engaging viewers through elementary shapes such as lines, circles, curves, and squares, creating visual experiences that at times trigger optical sensations of vibration and movement. The London show, her most extensive presentation in the city since her 2003 retrospective at Tate Britain, explored the stunning visual variety she has managed to achieve working exclusively with stripes, manipulating the surfaces of her vibrant canvases through subtle changes in hue, weight, rhythm, and density. As noted by Paul Moorhouse, “Throughout her development, Riley has drawn confirmation from Euge`ne Delacroix’s observation that ‘the first merit of a painting is to be a feast for the eyes.’ [Her] most recent stripe paintings are a striking reaffirmation of that principle, exciting and entrancing the eye in equal measure.” Created in close collaboration with the artist, the publication’s beautifully produced color plates offer a selection of the iconic works from the exhibition. Book excerpt: Published in conjunction with Flaka Haliti's solo presentation conceived for the Kosovo Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, this book continues the artist's invitation to encounter a visual field in which territorial boundaries are referenced and mediated by the sensory. Through the use of a saturated blue color altered by light and demarcated by architectural forms, the installation at the Venice Biennale reflects on the salient concept of the border. The United Nations building in Pristina was a point of departure for the exhibition, as Vanessa Joan Müller backgrounds in her essay on the project, as well as relating to concerns of the threshold and the horizon line: "Concatenated concrete pylons form a tall, compact barrier which separates the UN building at the city limits from that very city. The concrete of the barriers was painted on the outside to downplay the appearance of a military safety zone. Different shades of blue." The conversation between Markus Miessen and Haliti in the book tracks topics from migration to subjectivity, material states in relation to the digital and the status of internationalism. Haliti's approach is to recontextualize these politics into a spatial and visual abstraction. The accompanying book follows through on the exhibition's experience of place and the notion of the horizon as emblems of both possibilities and limitations; bounded by a deep blue, pages have been set as color fields and the typography of the texts shift in scale. Book excerpt: Shadow of a Daydream is a series of powerful new paintings inspired by the artist's recent residency in Berlin. The works demonstrate Ghenie's fascination for history and the trauma of dictatorship; they also reveal his current preoccupation with the Jungian notion of the 'collective unconscious'. Ghenie has dramatically increased the scale of his paintings for this show in order to develop and sustain an array of complex compositions peopled with unexpected ensembles of figures, statues, boxes and buildings. Strangely, the eclectic and often bizarre groupings are completely convincing in their present contexts, connected as they are by what Ghenie describes as the 'surrealistic exercise' of daydreaming. There is a strongly progressive narrative that runs through Ghenie's exhibition; the sources for his images are derived from a combination of his own personal store of memories and from historical books, archives and film - both documentary and fictional. The weaving together of personal histories with collective memories makes for a psychologically disturbing encounter on the part of the viewer, who may experience a sense of unease or an uncanny jolt of recognition as they survey the paintings.
