Four women priests have found God in the most unexpected places: in a dive bar, at the drugstore, and even at the grave. As we go about our everyday lives, the divine can feel elusive: grappling with the realities of cancer, infertility treatments, searching for a birth story, and honoring the divine in a child with autism. Yet God was there all along. This book is a guide to help you name God's presence in your own history. Reflection questions and instructions are included for writing and sharing your spiritual autobiography in the hope that you, too, discover grace in the rearview mirror.

Book excerpt: "Life is meant to be lived " Books communicate ideas, yes, but they are more than that. The book you are holding, along with Greg's previous writing (A Journey Shared, 2005), invites you on a journey. It's the life he has lived over the past year or so-shared. It's the ups and the downs, not compressed into scholarly jargon, but hopefully fresh and real, and like a conversation at the corner cafe. There are some deep things in this book, and some more light-hearted. Subjects ranging from the character of God (love, grace, mercy), to life with small kids, to divorce and blended families, to death, taxes, and a whole section on money. But all of it is an invitation to think along with the author, to travel together on the path trod over the past twelve months. The book does not assume to present all the answers to the questions posed. Certainly not. But Greg has pondered the side things, and invites you to do that with him.

Read From the Rearview Mirror and relish the goodness of this man.” — Goldie Hawn, entertainer and philanthropist From the Rearview Mirror is the story of Bill Milliken’s journey from an affluent Pittsburgh suburb to the streets of Harlem and the Lower East Side of New York City in the 1960s, on to communal living in Georgia in the 1970s, to working with multiple presidential administrations in Washington, D.C. He struggled with an undiagnosed learning disability in school, believing he was dumb and had nowhere to go. After connecting with the Young Life outreach program at the age of 17, however, he found his calling doing street work with homeless, addicted, and other at-risk teens in the turbulent ’60s. Bill and his colleagues founded what grew into Communities in Schools, a highly effective organization working to bring services to young people and prevent them from dropping out of school. Along the way, Bill struggled with bringing his personal life into alignment with his ideals, coming to terms with organized religion and his own spiritual path, and creating the family and community he’d always longed for.

Book excerpt: Ward of the court at age eight and marginalized by five foster homes, she became a wanting teenager. Desires of the heart became like a burning fire shut up in her bones resulting in years of painful consequences. Romanticizing an idealistic goal for home and family, she learned the hard way that life is not always sunshine and peppermints. In her teens, she was a hired housemaid. As a young adult, she began to remove self-imposed barriers leading to a twenty-year career in law enforcement. Throughout years of adversity, abuse and fear, she sometimes lived in a world that felt like a big leaky boat, intimidated by the storms. Unable to graduate from high school with no place to call home, she married at seventeen and had her first child a year later. She languished in the wilderness of a barren desert with two children. In her twenties she became an impoverished single mother. She endured two failed marriages, one to a deserting husband and one to a dangerous psychopath. Yet, she found her strength and changed course for a life of productivity, security and independence. As life began to finally settle down for her, she was jolted by cancer which was followed by six recurrences over twenty-four years. At age seventy-six she began care-giving for her third husband of forty years, her childhood sweetheart, who suffered from alcoholism and Lewy Bodies Dementia. In 2013, after fifty-six years, God-ordained events led to finding a child she had given up for adoption. Her triumphs, tragedies, and mystifying events that tested her faith and convictions became a book at age eighty-seven. For a life cannot be fully determined until it is fully lived.

Book excerpt: In Search of Serenity recounts the stories of adoption through the foster system-not once, but twice-as Sally J King weaves her daughter's adoption odyssey with her own. Apprehended as a starved and neglected infant, Sally became a ward of children's services until being adopted at six months of age. Though placed with a caring family, trauma followed her though childhood with the insidious sexual abuse by a family member. Candid and raw, Sally's account cuts to the heart of the wounded foster child and exposes flaws in the system that is set out to protect its children. With an insider's perspective, and practical advice for foster parents and adoptive families alike, Sally does not pull any punches. For the children's sake, change must happen, both with the system and within hurting families. Readers will be encouraged and motivated by Sally's energy and irrepressible spirit to "do the hard things" that can make a difference for their children and families. Sally's positive message to families is "Healing, Help, Hope." This book dishes it out in huge helpings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its simplest, this is the story of an adoption. Simple stops there. This is a book that takes you to Europes highest mountain, to Moscow in chaos, to the streets and valleys of Bulgaria, and the palaces of Vienna, all part of the unimaginable tangle that begins when a 13-year old Russian sends a fax to America. Anyone who has been involved with adoption, or has contemplated adoption, will feel the twists and turns, the emotional peaks and valleys. Normally, international adoptions involve infants, who in effect, start an entirely new life before they are old enough to remember anything about their pre-adoption days. On the other hand, a 13-year old: Is already formed, has a culture and a language (which isnt yours) Has parents who have raised himso why would they let him go? He still loves his birth parents, and they have raised him well. So, what is going on? In this case, has had more than his fair-share of tragedy, dislocation and trauma, and is in for a lot more before the book is done The story truly has all the elements of a suspense novel, and it teaches you never to take anything for granted, never to give up, and never to think that anything is hopeless. There is deep, deep sadness in this book, as well as the miracle of two families fusing into one. There is a lot of laughter too, and many, many wonderful characters, some of whom could have stepped out of the pages of Dickens. Furthermore, what happened nextwell that is even more remarkable. But, that is another story.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • “A powerful, heartbreaking, necessary masterpiece.”—Cheryl Strayed, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wild The moving story of what one woman learned from fostering a newborn—about injustice, about making mistakes, about how to better love and protect people beyond our immediate kin May you always feel at home. After their decision not to have a biological child, Sarah Sentilles and her husband, Eric, decide to adopt via the foster care system. Despite knowing that the system’s goal is the child’s reunification with the birth family, Sarah opens their home to a flurry of social workers who question them, evaluate them, and ultimately prepare them to welcome a child into their lives—even if it means most likely having to give the child back. After years of starts and stops, and endless navigation of the complexities and injustices of the foster care system, a phone call finally comes: a three-day-old baby girl named Coco, in immediate need of a foster family. Sarah and Eric bring this newborn stranger home. “You were never ours,” Sarah tells Coco, “yet we belong to each other.” A love letter to Coco and to the countless children like her, Stranger Care chronicles Sarah’s discovery of what it means to mother—in this case, not just a vulnerable infant but the birth mother who loves her, too. Ultimately, Coco’s story reminds us that we depend on family, and that family can take different forms. With prose that Nick Flynn has called “fearless, stirring, rhythmic,” Sentilles lays bare an intimate, powerful story with universal concerns: How can we care for and protect one another? How do we ensure a more hopeful future for life on this planet? And if we’re all related—tree, bird, star, person—how might we better live?

Book excerpt: The softer side of the abortion debate In contrast to the front line war of words that emanate with most protest views, Doris takes us behind the scenes into real life drama. The stories contained in this book will make you smile, cry, and find a place in your heart for hurting people that are usually blurred out of the media headlines. As a Pastor, I appreciate the caring way she approaches the issues and the caring hands that she reaches out with to touch hurting hearts. Pastor Rudy Bond New Life Worship Center, Tyler, Texas Doris has gathered a treasury of hope and joy surrounding the adoption process, including Scriptural encouragement and honesty about the fears and challenges involved. This book is a testament to the hand of God with even the least of these. Sara Maynard is a Texas attorney, specializing in representing children. She is Board Certified in Juvenile Law. ADOPTION JOYS, THEY EXPECTED A MIRACLE, explains Gods plan for unplanned pregnancies through moving testimonies of families who have experienced the joy of adoption. As the mother of two adopted children and one adopted grandson, I found myself rejoicing with the families through their stories. This book will be an effective tool to encourage couples to consider adopting children to complete their family. Birth parents will also understand the joy their baby will bring to the adoptive couple; and, perhaps, cause them to consider releasing their baby for adoption. God patterned adoption by adopting us into His family through His Son Jesus hrist. May this book challenge birth and adoptive parents to allow children to experience Gods unconditional love through the gift of adoption. Judith E. Shalllcross, Retired Christian School principal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on ethnographic fieldwork at a small Chicago adoption agency specializing in transracial adoption, Contingent Kinship charts the entanglement of institutional structures and ideologies of family, race, and class to argue that adoption is powerfully implicated in the question of who can have a future in the twenty-first-century United States. With a unique focus on the role that social workers and other professionals play in mediating relationships between expectant mothers and prospective adopters, Kathryn A. Mariner develops the concept of “intimate speculation,” a complex assemblage of investment, observation, and anticipation that shapes the adoption process into an elaborate mechanism for creating, dissolving, and exchanging imagined futures. Shifting the emphasis from adoption’s outcome to its conditions of possibility, this insightful ethnography places the practice of domestic adoption within a temporal, economic, and affective framework in order to interrogate the social inequality and power dynamics that render adoption—and the families it produces—possible.

Book excerpt: "Latin American countries are the only Western countries that are poor and that aren't gaining ground on the United States. This paper evaluates why Latin America has not replicated Western economic success. We find that this failure is primarily due to TFP differences. Latin America's TFP gap is not plausibly accounted for by human capital differences, but rather reflects inefficient production. We argue that competitive barriers are a promising channel for understanding low Latin TFP. We document that Latin America has many more international and domestic competitive barriers than do Western and successful East Asian countries. We also document a number of microeconomic cases in Latin America in which large reductions in competitive barriers increase productivity to Western levels"--National Bureau of Economic Research web site.
