Book excerpt: This book is based on an Adirondack furniture book donated to Philippe Weisbecker 20 years ago by a New York friend who worked in a hardware store.00"I've always loved rustic furniture, made from stumps, branches or pieces of wood. Initially I wanted to faithfully reproduce the furniture in the book. Very quickly, I realized that I was especially interested in the skeleton of these pieces of furniture, their structures and the vectors of force that govern them. Little by little, I even came to free myself from these parameters to arrive at simpler structural compositions, halfway between figuration and abstraction." Philippe Weisbecker00Born in 1942, Weisbecker studied interior design in Paris. By 1968 he moved to New York. First working as a draftsman in an architectural firm, he started a career as an illustrator at the age of 30. His work has been published in major american publications such as the New York Times, Time magazine and The New Yorker among others. In the late 90's he shifted gradually from commissioned work to his own original production which he is now showing in galeries worldwide. Moving back to France in 2006, he is now sharing his time between Paris and Barcelona.

In essence, Weisbecker's art consist of depicting elements of our daily life untouched by the sometime devastating effects of fashion's changing mood. These range from tools to appliances, from industrial buildings to public housing and, in the present case, greenhouses. Greenhouses were created for the purpose of preserving an inner world from the outside world. they haven't changed much over time. Their purpose created their form. There lies their eternal beauty. It is this beauty that Weisbecker invites us to share with him through his Greenhouses study book."

Download or read book Remembering Che written by Aleida March and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Che Guevara’s widow remembers a great revolutionary romance tragically cut short by Che’s assassination in Bolivia. When Aleida March first met Che Guevara, she was a twenty-year-old combatant from the provinces of Cuba, he an already legendary revolutionary and larger-than-life leader. And yet there was another, more human side to Che, one Aleida was given special access to, first as his trusted compañera and later as the love of his life. With great immediacy and poignancy, Aleida recounts the story of their epic romance—their fitful courtship against the backdrop of the Cuban revolutionary war, their marriage at the war’s end and the birth of their four children, up through Che’s tragic assassination in Bolivia less than ten years later. Featuring excerpts from their letters, nearly one hundred never-before-seen photographs from their private collection, and a moving short story Che wrote for Aleida, here is an intimate look at the man behind the legend and the tenacious, courageous woman who knew him best—a story of passionate love, wrenching sacrifice, and unwavering heroism.

Download or read book A Wild Thing written by Hilde Bouchez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Everyday objects can have an extra dimension or quality that has no relation to functionality, form, a concept or a trend. So what is it that gives a particular glass an 'aura'? Why should one thing have more shine, passion and 'mystical allure' than another? A Wild Thing attempts to identify and describe these often intangible qualities. There seems to be an inner light that shines from certain things. Unlike the blinding spotlight of media and marketing, this light is gentle and clear and reflects the methodology and intention of the maker. Ancient craftsmen designed from a place of unity with matter and the cosmos, putting themselves at the service of the making process and thereby creating a moment of transference from maker to thing. A Wild Thing focuses on how this unity between a person, a thing and the universe can be attained through a particular manner of both designing and experiencing objects. This approach is in stark contrast to that of the star designer, who frequently conceives useless products that are nothing more than status symbols designed to generate wasteful consumption. In a series of essays, Hilde Bouchez reflects on design history and the latest movements within the design world. She also presents a phenomenological methodology that opens up a new, more poetic approach to everyday objects for both maker and consumer. The texts are linked by the author's search for a sustainability and meaning that transcends the organic component of materials"--Back cover.
