Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 13 million unemployed during the Great Depression, the country's new president in 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt, as one of his programs to get people back to work, established the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC, as it became known for short, grew into one of FDR's most successful and popular programs. Underfed young men throughout the country enlisted in the CCC and were bused to camps in national and state forests, where they were employed making the forests accessible to visitors. In Rhode Island, seven camps were established, from Primrose/Woonsocket to the north, Escoheag/Beach Pond to the west, and Burlingame/Westerly to the south. Rhode Islanders should be grateful that Martin Podskoch, one of the nation's authorities on the CCC, has turned his talents to Rhode Island. In this remarkable and authoritative book, Podskoch rediscovers the wonderful stories of CCC efforts undertaken by Rhode Islanders and fills the book's pages with photographs that bring the period back to life. Some of the sites can be visited today. This book is a real treat for readers to enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, the vast Adirondack wilderness has beckoned. Some, having sampled the treasury of Adirondack art and literature, are drawn by its spectacular beauty; many are lured by its year-round sports and recreational opportunities; others are enticed by its health-giving qualities-the clear air, sparkling waters, and refreshing woodlands. The Adirondacks: 1931-1990 celebrates the years in which the six-million-acre preserve truly became a people's park. With some two hundred rare images, the book includes views of the Winter Olympics held at Lake Placid in 1932, attended by thousands from the world over. It applauds the American boys working in the CCC camps in the Adirondacks during the Great Depression. It follows the steamboats as they ply Lake George and the Fulton Chain and other lakes, as well as the railroads as they bring in more and more visitors. It traces the rise and fall of the grand hotels and their successors: the cabins, motels, cottages, second homes, and campsites of the motoring public. It highlights the music, the architecture, the animals, the crafts-the more recent history of the Adirondack culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While numerous books have been written about the great camps, hiking trails, and wildlife of the Adirondacks, noted anthropologist David R. Starbuck offers the only archeological guide to a region long overlooked by archeologists who thought that "all the best sites" were elsewhere. This beautifully illustrated volume focuses on the rich and varied material culture brought to the mountains by their original Native American inhabitants, along with subsequent settlements created by soldiers, farmers, industrialists, workers, and tourists. Starbuck examines Native American sites on Lake George and Long Lake; military and underwater sites throughout the Lake George, Fort Ticonderoga, and Crown Point regions; old industrial sites where forges, tanneries, and mines once thrived; farms and the rural landscape; and many other sites, including the abandoned Frontier Town theme park, the ghost town of Adirondac, Civilian Conservation Corps camps, ski areas, and graveyards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed, rejuvenated, and protected American forests and parks at the height of the Great Depression. Propelled by the unprecedented poverty of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established an array of massive public works programs designed to provide direct relief to America’s poor and unemployed. The New Deal’s most tangible legacy may be the Civilian Conservation Corps’s network of parks, national forests, scenic roadways, and picnic shelters that still mark the country’s landscape. CCC enrollees, most of them unmarried young men, lived in camps run by the Army and worked hard for wages (most of which they had to send home to their families) to preserve America’s natural treasures. In The New Deal’s Forest Army, Benjamin F. Alexander chronicles how the corps came about, the process applicants went through to get in, and what jobs they actually did. He also explains how the camps and the work sites were run, how enrollees spent their leisure time, and how World War II brought the CCC to its end. Connecting the story of the CCC with the Roosevelt administration’s larger initiatives, Alexander describes how FDR’s policies constituted a mixed blessing for African Americans who, even while singled out for harsh treatment, benefited enough from the New Deal to become an increasingly strong part of the electorate behind the Democratic Party. The CCC was the only large-scale employment program whose existence FDR foreshadowed in speeches during the 1932 campaign—and the dearest to his heart throughout the decade that it lasted. Alexander reveals how the work itself left a lasting imprint on the country’s terrain as the enrollees planted trees, fought forest fires, landscaped public parks, restored historic battlegrounds, and constructed dams and terraces to prevent floods. A uniquely detailed exploration of life in the CCC, The New Deal’s Forest Army compellingly demonstrates how one New Deal program changed America and gave birth to both contemporary forestry and the modern environmental movement.
