Book excerpt: The major research results from the Scalable Input/Output Initiative, exploring software and algorithmic solutions to the I/O imbalance. As we enter the "decade of data," the disparity between the vast amount of data storage capacity (measurable in terabytes and petabytes) and the bandwidth available for accessing it has created an input/output bottleneck that is proving to be a major constraint on the effective use of scientific data for research. Scalable Input/Output is a summary of the major research results of the Scalable I/O Initiative, launched by Paul Messina, then Director of the Center for Advanced Computing Research at the California Institute of Technology, to explore software and algorithmic solutions to the I/O imbalance. The contributors explore techniques for I/O optimization, including: I/O characterization to understand application and system I/O patterns; system checkpointing strategies; collective I/O and parallel database support for scientific applications; parallel I/O libraries and strategies for file striping, prefetching, and write behind; compilation strategies for out-of-core data access; scheduling and shared virtual memory alternatives; network support for low-latency data transfer; and parallel I/O application programming interfaces.

Book excerpt: Since the first edition was published, new technologies have come up, especially in the area of convergence of Computing and Communications, accompanied by a lot of new technical terms. This second expanded and updated edition has been worked out to cope with this situation. The number of entries has been incremented by 35%. With about 159,000 entries, this dictionary offers a valuable guide to navigate through the entanglement of German and English terminology. The lexicographic concept (indication of the subject field for every term, short definitions, references to synonyms, antonyms, general and derivative terms) has been maintained, as well as the tabular layout.

Book excerpt: Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, there has been much discussion on the subject of immigration to America, including the intersection of race, culture and identity. The devastating attack had an effect, not only on Americans but, also on citizens in other countries who hope to live or visit the United States. Public discourse has produced questions and concerns, but few from a personal standpoint. Lost & Found in America is the story of an immigrant from Africa, who, after the events of September 11, 2001, gets caught up circumstances that transforms his relationships, personal well-being, and perceptions about the United States. Lost & Found in America explores the multi-faceted circumstances that immigrants face, including how they deal with racism, expectations from home, the Barack Obama phenomenon, love and romance. As immigrants grapple to understand variations of American identities, Lost & Found In America provides a lens through which the folks from Africa see and analyze events in United States and tells the unique story of how new immigrants find a sense of belonging in the American culture. Reviews "Lost & Found in America is an outstanding first novel Dr Yvonne Seon, Founding Director Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center, Wright State University The story in this book is real, fascinating and humorous" - Dayton Weekly News

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, Senegalese hip hop--"Rap Galsen"--has reverberated throughout the world as an exemplar of hip hop resistance in its mobilization against government corruption during a series of tumultuous presidential elections. Yet Senegalese hip hop's story goes beyond resistance; it is a story of globalization, of diasporic movement and memory, of imagined African pasts and contemporary African realities, and of urbanization and the banality of socio-economic struggle. At particular moments in Rap Galsen's history, origin narratives linked hip hop to a mythologized Africa through the sounds of indigenous oralities. At other times, contrasting narratives highlighted hip hop's equally mythologized roots in the postindustrial U.S. inner city and African American experience. As Senegalese youth engage these globally circulating narratives, hip hop performance and its stories negotiate their place in a rapidly changing world. In Hip Hop Time explores this relationship between popular music and social change, framing Senegalese hip hop as a musical movement deeply tied to both indigenous performance practices and changing social norms in urban Africa. Author Catherine Appert takes us from Senegalese hip hop's beginnings among cosmopolitan youth in Dakar's affluent neighborhoods in the 1980s, to its spread throughout the city's ghettoized working class neighborhoods in the mid- to late-'90s, and into the present day, where political activism and hip hop musicality vie for position in local and global arenas. An ethnography of the inextricability of musical and social meaning in hip hop practice, In Hip Hop Time charts new intellectual territory in the scholarship of African and global hip hop.

Book excerpt: This is no ordinary history of a small weekend community in New Hampshire. Local lore has it that Malcolm Ford murdered his more famous brother, Paul Leicester Ford, at a tavern at the end of the road. In the process of investigating this legend, the Rev. William D. Eddy has compiled this fascinating chronicle of the inhabitants and associates of Merrywood, the grand estate on Stone Pond near Malborough, New Hampshire. In this idiosyncratic memoir, Mr. Eddy takes the readers through the local history of one grand estate, Merrywood, and it's inhabitants and associates. He shows the reader a glimpse of the lives and foibles of the Chases, Fords, Kidders, and the Lodges -- among them publishing magnates, German refugees, and influential folksingers. This book is a must-read for anyone who knows and loves the Arcadia at the base of Mt. Monadnock.
