Book excerpt: Beaches are places of contact, play, confrontation and friction: first comers always arrive on a beach. After Europeans moved into the Antipodes, the coast was the first frontier to be defined. Flinders' circumnavigation in 1802 had mapped 'Australia', revealing the land as 'girt by sea', as the national anthem continues to remind us. All kinds of ideas about the coast, beaches, sea changes, holiday places and islands swirl and eddy in this unique collection of writing.
Book Synopsis Chain Letters by : Hamish Maxwell-Stewart
Download or read book Chain Letters written by Hamish Maxwell-Stewart and published by Melbourne University. This book was released on 2001 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to apply new academic understandings of the convict transportation system to explore the lives of individual convicts. In searching for the convict voice, each chapter is a detective story in miniature, either an exercise in discovering the identity behind a particular account or a piecing together of a convict life from the scattered fragments of a tale. Many issues of great contemporary interest arise from these stories, including the multicultural nature of Australian colonial society and, above all, the importance of love and hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia is one of the most ethnically diverse societies in the world today. From its ancient indigenous origins to British colonisation followed by waves of European then international migration in the twentieth century, the island continent is home to people from all over the globe. Each new wave of settlers has had a profound impact on Australian society and culture. The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australia has attained the centenary of its federation.

Book excerpt: Since Mentor, Telemachus' advisor in Homer's Odyssey, gave name to the figure of the ›wise teacher,‹ fictional representations of mentoring have permeated classic and contemporary cultural texts of different literary genres such as fiction, poetry, and life writing. The contributions of this volume explore wisdom in old age through a series of narratives of mentorship which, either from a critical or a personal perspective, undermine ageist views of later life.

Book excerpt: In 1829 Adelaide de la Thoreza, a twenty-three-year-old woman born in Madrid, was tried at London's Old Bailey and sentenced to seven years' transportation to Australia. Half a century later a Presbyterian clergyman in the New South Wales town of Richmond wrote a biography of this Spanish convict, who had recently died. In this book chapter we interrogate his romantic account of how the daughter of Spanish aristocrats became first a convict and then a pioneer mother, whose oldest son Alf was born in the Parramatta Female Factory and given the surname "Smith" to cover his illegitimacy. Alf's reminiscences of life as a drover were published in 1909.

Book Synopsis Photography in Colonial Australia by : Robert Holden
Download or read book Photography in Colonial Australia written by Robert Holden and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography in Colonial Australia examines the Australian books of the nineteenth century that use original photographs as a means of illustration. For the first time in Australia, Robert Holden has assessed the importance of photographically illustrated books. Part One of Photography in Colonial Australia is an historical survey, looking at issues like colonisation through photography and whether it was a nineteenth-century photographer's role to create images like an artist, or to accurately recreate the image before the camera's eye like a mirror. Part Two of the work focuses on a range of photographic genres; specifically royalty, Aborigines, exploration and travel, science, varia and art. Any person with an interest in photography, nineteenth-century social history, illustrated books, or bibliography will find this work an invaluable reference. Sixty-five photographic illustrations and a full bibliography of 130 items makes Photography in Colonial Australia the standard cited source, and this important text is further enhanced by an extensive index of photographers and publishers. 'This pioneering work by Robert Holden, which details 130 publications issued in Australia before 1900... will place one country's publishing curiosities in an international context...' (from the foreword by Lucien Goldschmidt, world authority on photographically illustrated books).
