Download or read book Change the Story written by Our Watch and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Watch partnered with Australia's National Research Organisation for Women's Safety (ANROWS) and the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) to create Change the story: A shared framework for the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia. The framework draws upon the latest international evidence and consultations with over 400 stakeholders across Australia to explore what drives violence against women and what works to prevent it. It demonstrates that, while violence against women has no single cause, it is strongly associated with particular dimensions of gender inequality, in both public life and personal relationships. It asserts that an Australia where women and their children live free from violence is an achievable long-term goal, but one that can only be realised by addressing the drivers of this violence, which are deeply entrenched in our social and cultural norms structures and practices, across our communities and in our daily lives.Change the story details the key elements required to create a strategic, collaborative and consistent national approach to preventing violence against women. The framework:* outlines 10 essential and supporting actions to prevent violence against women by addressing its gendered drivers and reinforcing factors* provides evidence-based guidance to government, the private sector, civil society and communities on how to lead, coordinate, resource and support effective prevention effort across Australia* aims to inform and support the development of policy and legislation, prevention programs, strategies and initiatives of all kinds, and advocacy. The framework demonstrates how, by working together, governments, organisations, communities and individuals can create a safer Australia built upon respect and equality. It offers a path towards this ultimate goal of social transformation, providing the necessary evidence, rationale and guidance to drive and support a significant and sustained nation-wide effort to prevent violence against women and their children.

Download or read book Gun Violence written by Philip J. Cook and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 billion dollars. That is the annual cost of gun violence in America according to the authors of this landmark study, a book destined to change the way Americans view the problem of gun-related violence. Until now researchers have assessed the burden imposed by gunshot injuries and deaths in terms of medical costs and lost productivity. Here, economists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig widen the lens, developing a framework to calculate the full costs borne by Americans in a society where both gun violence and its ever-present threat mandate responses that touch every aspect of our lives. All of us, no matter where we reside or how we live, share the costs of gun violence. Whether waiting in line to pass through airport security or paying taxes for the protection of public officials; whether buying a transparent book bag for our children to meet their school's post-Columbine regulations or subsidizing an urban trauma center, the steps we take are many and the expenditures enormous. Cook and Ludwig reveal that investments in prevention, avoidance, and harm reduction, both public and private, constitute a far greater share of the gun-violence burden than previously recognized. They also employ extensive survey data to measure the subjective costs of living in a society where there is risk of being shot or losing a loved one or neighbor to gunfire. At the same time, they demonstrate that the problem of gun violence is not intractable. Their review of the available evidence suggests that there are both additional gun regulations and targeted law enforcement measures that will help. This urgently needed book documents for the first time how gun violence diminishes the quality of life for everyone in America. In doing so, it will move the debate over gun violence past symbolic politics to a direct engagement with the costs and benefits of policies that hold promise for reducing gun violence and may even pay for themselves.

Book excerpt: A classic. Fraternity Gang Rape is a fascinating analysis of how all-male groups such as fraternities or athletic teams may create a rape culture where behavior occurs that few individuals acting alone would perpetrate. The new Introduction and Afterword shed light on how this pernicious problem continues today, insightfully illuminating the complicity of society in the failure of accountability for acquaintance rape."--Mary P. Kimmel, American Journal of Sociology."Sanday draws a chilling picture of fraternity society, its debasement of women and the way it creates a looking-glass world in which gang rape can be considered normal behavior and the pressure of group-think it powerful. "--The Philadelphia Inquirer."An important book Ýthat ̈ should be read by everyone in higher education - faculty, administrators, and students."--Contemporary Sociology."Very accessible...Sanday's book explores the vulnerability of college women, and of young men seeking to prove their manhood.
