Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Upon the Condition of Articulation Teaching in American Schools for the Deaf The Education of the Deaf, about to be issued by the Volta Bureau, says: The returns of pupils taught by speech are incomplete. The number reported for 1891 is 963, or per cent. Of the school population. The above table indicates that the percentage, in the case of the younger pupils, must be very much larger. Out Of 836 new pupils admitted during the past school-year, 363, or 43 per cent., were taught by speech. This percentage, however, is probably excessive, because the table shows that those schools which have done the most work in articulation teaching have been the most ready to respond to Inquiries relating to the subject. We cannot, therefore, assume that the percentage holds for the schools that have not replied to my Circular letter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Articulation Teaching, Vol. 1 BY far the greater number of principles and theories which are advocated in this little volume did not origi nate in my mind. I adopted them after a good deal of thought and study and experiment. Being anxious to gain information from any source whatever, and to make use of anything that might be beneficial to my pupils, I have always tried to get hold of every book and periodi cal from which I thought I could gather knowledge that might directly or indirectly aid me in my work of giving speech to the deaf. I would gladly mention the names of all those whose ideas I have made my own, and whose suggestions I have followed in working out the system of instruction which is described herein, but refrain from attempting to do so, because I am afraid I might not remember them all and, therefore, take this way of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to every one of them. This manual is designed not only for the professional teacher, but also for the mother who is anxious to gather information that will be sufficient to enable her to teach a little deaf child at home for a while, till it is old enough to be sent away to a distant school. Such mothers might shrink from undertaking the task if they found that they would have to study a bulky volume in order to preparethemselves for it. Hence it was thought best to make this book as small as possible. But although it is small there is enough in it to give any person of common sense a good idea of what is to be done with a beginner in articulation, and how it is to be done. After all, the teaching of Speech to the deaf is not, as some people believe, such a wonderful, mysterious art that only those few can master it who are naturally gifted with such special talents as ordinary mortals do not possess and a description of it may be full without being particularly voluminous. In this connection I will also say that, in my opinion, our work does not require such a marvelous amount of patience as many seem to think. Perhaps my enthusiasm for it gets the best of my judgment, yet I must say that it is the most fascinating work, and I do not see how anything that is so highly interesting can be a tax on anybody's patience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventh Report of the Board of Directors and Officers of the California Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, and the Blind, to the Governor of the State of California, for the Two Years Ending Sept. 30, 1867 During the last two years a warm discussion has been carried On in various prominent journals at the East, elicited by the pro posed introduction into American schools for the deaf and dumb of this method. The measure has found most earnest advocates. Because these advocates are, without exception we believe, men practically unacquainted with the present modes in vogue among deaf mute instructors is no conclusive argument that they are wrong. Neither is an isolated case or two of successful articula tion conclusive evidence that they are right. The discussion has now culminated in what we have long desired to see, the estab lishment of a school, at Northampton, Mass, where the system is to be tried under the auspices of those who ardently believe in the practability of teaching articulation. We need no further argument, but rather a comparison of results, not between Ger many and America where the results are obtained in diverse lan guages, and translated into the exaggerated hyperboles of inex perienced visitors, but between Northampton and Hartford or New York, where pupils educated in the use of a common language can be brought face to face, in the presence Of professional experts. Let the test be for mental development, and not for parrot utter ances, and if that test prove the superiority of the German system over the American, we can assure the able Chairman-of the Massa chusetts Board of State Charities, that no professional pride will prevent the speedy introduction of that system into the California school for the deaf and dumb.
