Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conception of Volume 17 of the International Treatise Series on Advances in Plant Physiology has been made possible entirely due to worthy contributions from World Scientists, teachers and researchers of eminence in unequivocal fields. Scientists are well in search of specific and complete literature pertaining to meaningful research for the holistic development of agriculture. The undertaking of this Treatise Series on Plant Physiology is to genuinely categorize the insufficiencies in view of mounting consequential researches for increasing productivity, prosperity and sustainability of agriculture through influential and developing technologies for restructuring metabolic limitations most responsive to abiotic stress factors. Certainly, our idea is to recognize innovative science of value across the broad disciplinary range of the treatise. The aim is to make stronger the distinctive outcome of conscientious research in some of the very sensitive areas of Plant Physiology-Plant Molecular Physiology/ Molecular Biology that broadly highlights the recent developments and mechanisms underlying plant resilience to changing environments. This volume brings collectively much needed twenty-one review articles by fifty-one dedicated contributors for this volume assorted into five relevant sections, viz., Section I: Abiotic Stresses & Plant Productivity: Physiological & Molecular Perspectives; Section II:Plant Trace Elements in Plant Physiology; Section III: Plant Functions Research in Agricultural Progression; Section IV: Physiological Basis of Yield; Section V: Nutraceuticals, Medicinal & Aromatic Plant Wealth. This is commendable that the Volume 17 deals with challenges of ongoing international concern over the abiotic stresses under changing climate besides vital aspects related to image-based plant phenotyping; phenomics and its application in physiological breeding; trace elements; plant functions; physiological basis of yield variation; medicinal and aromatic plants and so on. Apart from fulfilling the acute need of this kind of select edition in different volumes for research teams and scientists engaged in various facets of plant sciences research in traditional and agricultural universities, institutes and research laboratories throughout the world, it would be extremely a constructive book and a voluminous reference material for acquiring advanced knowledge by post-graduate and Ph.D. scholars in response to the innovative courses in Plant Physiology, Plant Biochemistry, Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, Agronomy, Horticulture, and Botany.

Book excerpt: The study of air pollution effects on vegetation has made rapid progress in the last five years. Growing concerns about effects of future increases in temperature and carbon dioxide (C0 ) levels on plant life have altered 2 the perspective of plant biologists in the field of pollutant-plant inter actions. In many cases, it is anticipated that crops and trees will increasingly experience multiple stresses in an altered environment: an environment in which physiological processes will no longer be matched to climate. Because of this problem, a major part of the focus of the air pollution effects research has shifted since 1987. Moreover, recent advances in our understanding of plant metabolic and molecular responses to stress have made it clear that many abiotic stresses elicit similar fundamental mechanisms. Adaptation responses to drought, extremes of temperature, xenobiotics and air pollutants are now known to involve the response of both specific and common resistance mechanisms, which often include altered gene expression. The field of air pollution effects on vegetation has benefitted greatly from this unification since results obtained and advances made in allied fields are now directly relevant. The advent of molecular genetics has made possible the production of transgenic plants containing altered amounts of resistance gene products which enables the posing of experimental questions which could not be addressed only five years ago. Hypotheses concerning the relevance of specific metabolites and processes to known responses to air pollution stress can now be tested.

Book excerpt: The field of plant physiology includes the study of all chemical and physical processes of plants, from the molecular-level interactions of photosynthesis and the diffusion of water, minerals, and nutrients within the plant, to the larger-scale processes of plant growth, dormancy and reproduction. This new book covers a broad array of topics within the field. Plant Physiology focuses on the study of the internal activities of plants, including research into the molecular interactions of photosynthesis and the internal diffusion of water, minerals, and nutrients. Also included are investigations into the processes of plant development, seasonality, dormancy, and reproductive control. The chapters focus on various aspects of plant physiology, including phytochemistry; interactions within a plant between cells, issues, and organs; ways in which plants regulate their internal functions; and how plants respond to conditions and variations within the environment. Given the environmental crises brought about by pollution and climate change, this is a particularly vital area of study, since stress from water loss, changes in air chemistry, or crowding by other plants can lead to changes in the way a plant function. Readers of this book will gain the information they need to stay current with the latest research being done in this essential field of study.

An exploring mind, deeply religious spirit, and scientist's respect for truth, combined with singular personal charm, made of him not only a missionary in science, but a natural leader among the botanists of the United States. He set for his goal the building of a complete structure of the house of botany, and he took the lead in organizing defined branches of study which eliminated the waste of duplicated effort. The thread of this story of his life is maintained largely through excerpts of the correspondence of Coulter and his associates and by means of articles from the Botanical Gazette, which he founded. Originally published in 1944. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Plant response to reduced water availability and other abiotic stress (e.g. metals) have been analysed through changes in water absorption and transport mechanisms, as well as by molecular and genetic approach. A relatively new aspects of fruit nutrition are presented in order to provide the basis for the improvement of some fruit quality traits. The involvement of hormones, nutritional and proteomic plant profiles together with some structure/function of sexual components have also been addressed. Written by leading scientists from around the world it may serve as source of methods, theories, ideas and tools for students, researchers and experts in that areas of plant physiology.

Whittingham) and Plant Respiration (W.Stiles) in the 1950s and have been of great guidance for post-graduate studies in those years. Now great breakthrough have been made with the introduction of isotopes, modern tools and instruments which can project into the cell components and unravel the 'secrets' of plant life, with the results no one book could so completely cover a single topic like photosynthesis or respiration.
