Book excerpt: Results of experiments to determine the fluid loadings on harmonically oscillating circular cylinders show that the inertial (added mass) component of the loading is in good agreement with the inertial loading predicted by potential flow theory. The results show, however, that the commonly used velocity-squared law for damping is inadequate. In fact, experiments indicate that fluid damping is sensibly viscous (linear) for vibration amplitudes up to 0.8 diameter peak-to-peak and is a combination of viscous and velocity-squared damping at larger amplitudes. This new damping law has important implications for the design of offshore structures. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a circular cylinder is immersed in a fluid of infinite extent and oscillated in such a manner that drag effects are negligible, the closed form solution gives an added mass coefficient of 1.0. However, if boundaries are placed in proximity to the cylinder, and the cylinder is oscillated parallel to the boundary, the added mass varies from the classical result, and the forces are dependent upon the boundaries as well as the frequency. The study experimentally determined the total force on such a cylinder in proximity to an impermeable bottom surface under a free surface and related this force to the added mass coefficient. A+ COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS USED4 AND THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED GRAPHICALLY AS A FUNCTION OF DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETERS.

Book Synopsis Added Masses of Ship Structures by : Alexandr I. Korotkin
Download or read book Added Masses of Ship Structures written by Alexandr I. Korotkin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-12 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of added body masses that interact with fluid is necessary in various research and applied tasks of hydro- and aeromechanics: steady and unsteady motion of rigid bodies, total vibration of bodies in fluid, local vibration of the external plating of different structures. This reference book contains data on added masses of ships and various ship and marine engineering structures. Also theoretical and experimental methods for determining added masses of these objects are described. A major part of the material is presented in the format of final formulas and plots which are ready for practical use. The book summarises all key material that was published in both Russian and English-language literature. This volume is intended for technical specialists of shipbuilding and related industries. The author is one of the leading Russian experts in the area of ship hydrodynamics.

Book Synopsis The Added Mass and Damping Coefficients of and the Excitation Forces on Four Axisymmetric Ocean Platforms by : Kwang June Bai
Download or read book The Added Mass and Damping Coefficients of and the Excitation Forces on Four Axisymmetric Ocean Platforms written by Kwang June Bai and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents numerical results of the added mass and damping coefficients of vertical axisymmetric bodies on or under the free surface. Also computed are the excitation forces on these bodies due to an incident regular wave system. The numerical scheme employs a localized finite-element method, which is based on the theory of the calculus of variations. The excitation forces and moments on a submerged half-spheroid lying on the bottom are computed and compared with the results obtained by others. The agreement is good. Several specific types of floating vertical axisymmetric platforms are considered for ten different wave lengths, in connection with the design of an ocean-thermal converter platform. The added mass and damping coefficients, as well as the excitations, are presented. It is shown that simple strip theory gives a good approximation of the sway (and pitch) added mass for a disc platform having a long circular cylinder. (Author).

Book Synopsis Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures by : Jorgen Fredsoe
Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.
Book Synopsis Flow-Induced Vibration of Circular Cylindrical Structures by : Shoei-Sheng Chen
Download or read book Flow-Induced Vibration of Circular Cylindrical Structures written by Shoei-Sheng Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987-07-21 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the vibration of circular cylinders in quiescent fluid, axial flow, and crossflow, and applications of the analytical methods and experimental data in design evaluation of various system components consisting of circular cylinders. It emphasizes analytical tools to predict structural vibration and experimental data for fluid forces and will help solve many important flow induced vibration problems in different industries. The techniques and results presented in this book will be useful not only to designers but also to researchers in this field. A comprehensive treatment of different situations is given in this book. For example, a thorough review of the analytical models and most recent development of fluidelastic instability of an array of cylinders in crossflow are presented in Chapter 10.
