As in wireless networks, the wireless network must also be capable of providing guaranteed quality of service (QoS) over the lifetime of mobile connections. Some challenging problems that appear in multimedia wireless networks, such as user mobility and shortage of bandwidth, influence the QoS provisioning for the users. In this thesis, we propose a new framework callef Adaptive quality of service(AdQoS) to guarantee the QoS of multimedia traffic. The objective that AdQoS framework tries to accomplish are minimum new call blocking and handoff dropping rates. The keys feature of this framework is the bandwidth reallocation scheme. This scheme is developed to control the bandwidth operation of ongoing connections when the system is overloaded. The other key feature is the bandwidth reservation scheme incorporating a user mobility prediction to manage QoS of the networks. Based on the mobility, bandwidth is reserved to guarantee the uniterrupted handoff process. A comparison between existing user mobility prediction and the proposed scheme is also presented. An integrated system, which combines the bandwidth Allocation Level technique and the user mobility prediction, is also proposed. The proposed user mobility prediction algorithm integrates the Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurement for the mobile terminal's intra-cell movement and aggregate history of mobile terminals for inter-cell movement. When compared with the conventional scheme proposed in the literature, the simulation results show that our proposed schemes reduces the new call blocking probabilities, the handoff dropping probabilities and reduce significantly the probability of terminating calss while still maintaning efficient bandwidth usage.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second IFIP-TC6 Netw- king Conference, Networking 2002. Networking 2002 was sponsored bythe IFIP Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. For this reason the conference was structured into three tracks: i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols, ii) Perf- mance of Computer and Communication Networks, and iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. This year the conference received 314 submissions coming from 42 countries from all ?ve continents Africa (4), Asia (84), America (63), Europe (158), and Oc- nia (5). This represents a 50% increase in submissions over the ?rst conference, thus indicating that Networking is becoming a reference conference for wor- wide researchers in the networking community. With so manypapers to choose from, the job of the Technical Program C- mittee, to provide a conference program of the highest technical excellence, was both challenging and time consuming. From the 314 submissions, we ?nallys- ected 82 full papers for presentation during the conference technical sessions. To give young researchers and researchers from emerging countries the oppor- nityto present their work and to receive useful feedback from participants, we decided to include two poster sessions during the technical program. Thirty-one short papers were selected for presentation during the poster sessions. The conference technical program was split into three days, and included, in addition to the 82 refereed contributions, 5 invited papers from top-level rese- chers in the networking community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Call Admission Control (CAC) and Dynamic Channel Assignments (DCA) are important decision-making problems in mobile cellular communication systems. Current research in mobile communication considers them as two independent problems, although the former greatly depends on the resulting free channels obtained as the outcome of the latter. This book provides a solution to the CAC problem, considering DCA as an integral part of decision-making for call admission. Further, current technical resources ignore movement issues of mobile stations and fluctuation in network load (incoming calls) in the control strategy used for call admission. In addition, the present techniques on call admission offers solution globally for the entire network, instead of considering the cells independently. CAC here has been formulated by two alternative approaches. The first approach aimed at handling the uncertainty in the CAC problem by employing fuzzy comparators. The second approach is concerned with formulation of CAC as an optimization problem to minimize call drop, satisfying a set of constraints on feasibility and availability of channels, hotness of cells, and velocity and angular displacement of mobile stations. Evolutionary techniques, including Genetic Algorithm and Biogeography Based Optimization, have been employed to solve the optimization problems. The proposed approaches outperform traditional methods with respect to grade and quality of services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficiency in managing scarce wireless resources has been a major design obstacle in wireless mobile networks since its advent. A large body of work has been published on the subject in relation to the first two generation and third generation (3G) of wireless networks. However, these solutions are not readily applicable to the future IP based multi-hop wireless networks. Increased trend in the number of users accessing multimedia rich traffic, and the impacts of mobility management support mechanisms alongside the shared nature of backhaul nodes demand exploration of new avenues of resource management policies. In this thesis a set of schemes are proposed to address the issue of Call Admission Control (CAC) in future multi-hop IP based mobile networks. The first scheme is based on a joint CAC and route assignment design mechanism in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) environment, addressing issues such as pricing policies, wireless resource constraints of the access and backhaul links as well as maximising network provider's revenue. Study's focus is then shifted towards CAC design in Mobility Agent (MA) based Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) networks. A novel class-based CAC mechanism was proposed with the aim of eliminating bottleneck effect at the MAs. To further improve the overall capacity of the network, in conjunction with the proposed CAC mechanism, a modified version of a previously proposed Route Optimisation (RO) scheme is implemented. The performance of the proposed schemes is investigated and analysed through extensive simulations. Comparative studies are then carried out to examine the network provider's total revenue gain in WMNs environment, total blocking probability and per class blocking probability in PMIPv6 networks.
