Book excerpt: This study is about the modeling and control of permanent magnet synchronous motors which are prime candidates for direct drive applications, due to their characteristics like high torque over a wide speed range, high acceleration/deceleration and high torqe/intertia ratio. Direct drive applications solve problems like backlash, friction and coupling effects, but as a result the filtering effect on torque ripple is also lost which may give rise to undesirable performance in robotics. Thus initially in this thesis, the modeling of the PMSM is done to include the space harmonics which give rise to torque ripple. First, past studies on torque ripple suppression are reviewed and new and more efficient methods are presented, offering more generality and flexibility of control. Assuming these methods first, the adaptive model folowing control of PMSM is studied and simulated on a single link manipulator to demonstrate theimproved performance of the system in terms of tracking error and torque ripple suppression. Then, simulation results are obtained for an adaptive feedback linearization scheme developed for the smooth motion of a single link manipulator, using parameter identification. Next, experimental results are obtained for the position control of PMSM using conventional PID, optimal and adaptive control. The test stand is arranged to simulate a single link manipulator with varying inertia and it has been noted that the adaptive control method gives the overall best system responses in terms of error convergence. However, with this control scheme no parameter convergence has been achieved. Thus, in the final part of the thesis simulation results are given using the same adaptive control method but for a persistently exciting reference signal instead of the previous critically damped one and parameter convergence is obtained, as expected.

Book excerpt: Fast dynamic response, precise tracking performance, and strong robustness to disturbance are usually needed for high-performance field-oriented control (FOC) of permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). Moreover, electromechanical sensors are commonly used to obtain accurate rotor position information for the FOC of PMSMs. The use of these sensors not only increased the cost but also reduced the reliability of the PMSM drive system. To overcome these drawbacks, the development of rotor position sensorless FOC schemes for PMSMs is desired. In this dissertation, based on the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) technique, three control schemes, i.e., an adaptive sliding-mode current control (SMCC), an adaptive sliding-mode speed control (SMSC), and a robust rotor position sensorless control were developed for PMSMs. In the adaptive SMCC scheme, an extended state observer (ESO) was designed to estimate in real time the PMSM parameter variations, which were treated as the internal disturbance of the PMSM drive system; the control law of the SMCC was then adapted by compensating the estimated internal disturbance. The adaptive SMSC scheme was designed in a way similar to the adaptive SMCC scheme. The core of the sensorless control scheme is a novel enhanced linear ADRC (ELADRC) algorithm consisting of two linear ESOs (LESOs) and a proportional current controller. One LESO was designed to estimate the back electromotive force, which was treated as the external disturbance. The other LESO was designed to estimate the internal disturbances, i.e., parameter and current regulation quality variations. The estimated total disturbance was used as a feedforward compensation term in the current control loops to improve the current regulation quality of the PMSM drive, which further improved the rotor position estimation performance. The proposed three control schemes were validated by experimental studies on two laboratory PMSM drive testbeds. The experimental results showed that the proposed ADRC-based adaptive SMCC and SMSC schemes had a faster dynamic response, more precise current and speed tracking performance, and stronger robustness to disturbances than the existing control schemes. Moreover, the proposed ELADRC-based sensorless FOC scheme had better dynamic performance and was more robust to PMSM parameter variations than the existing sensorless FOC schemes.

Book excerpt: In this book, modeling and control design of electric motors, namely step motors, brushless DC motors and induction motors, are considered. The book focuses on recent advances on feedback control designs for various types of electric motors, with a slight emphasis on stepper motors. For this purpose, the authors explore modeling of these devices to the extent needed to provide a high-performance controller, but at the same time one amenable to model-based nonlinear designs. The control designs focus primarily on recent robust adaptive nonlinear controllers to attain high performance. It is shown that the adaptive robust nonlinear controller on its own achieves reasonably good performance without requiring the exact knowledge of motor parameters. While carefully tuned classical controllers often achieve required performance in many applications, it is hoped that the advocated robust and adaptive designs will lead to standard universal controllers with minimal need for fine tuning of control parameters.

Book excerpt: With the rapid development of military and aerospace industries, the performance requirements of numerical control equipment are constantly improving. Permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) has the advantages of high speed and high precision. Meanwhile, it overcomes the influence of various factors in the intermediate links such as the screw and gear in the rotating motor. Therefore, PMLSM has very important value in high-precision industrial servo applications that require high-precision linear servo drivers. This book mainly introduces the intelligent vector control strategy and sensorless control strategy of PMLSM. Compared with the traditional control strategy, the intelligent vector control strategy of the motor can better improve the control performance of the motor. In modern motor control systems, many new intelligent vector control strategies have been proposed. This paper focuses on the sliding mode control strategy, model predictive control strategy, adaptive control strategy, active disturbance rejection control strategy and model free control strategy of PMLSM. Relying on the mathematical model of PMLSM, the formula derivation of the above intelligent control strategies is explained in detail, and the system block diagram is drawn to help readers better understand the basic working principle of these intelligent control strategies. In the control system of the motor, in order to achieve better control performance, accurate speed information and mover position information of the PMLSM are required. The traditional collection of speed information and mover position information is realized by adding mechanical sensors, but the addition of mechanical sensors will lead to an increase in the cost of the motor. Meanwhile, the size and weight of the motor will be affected, and there will be some additional interference factors, which will have a certain impact on the control performance of the motor. In order to make the motor get rid of the dependence on mechanical sensors, the sensorless control strategy is introduced into the motor control system, and the position information and speed information of the motor are estimated through a certain control algorithm. At present, the common sensorless control strategies are high-frequency signal injection method and fundamental back EMF observation method. This paper introduces the design of the sliding mode observation method, the observation method based on the model reference adaptive system and the observation method based on the extended Kalman filter algorithm. The above sensorless control strategies are introduced in detail through the corresponding formula derivation and system block diagram.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue deals with improvements in the energy efficiency of electric devices, machines, and drives, which are achieved through improvements in the design, modelling, control, and operation of the system. Properly sized and placed coils of a welding transformer can reduce the required iron core size and improve the efficiency of the welding system operation. New structures of the single-phase field excited flux switching machine improve its performance in terms of torque, while having higher back-EMF and unbalanced electromagnetic forces. A properly designed rotor notch reduces the torque ripple and cogging torque of interior permanent magnet motors for the drive platform of electric vehicles, resulting in lower vibrations and noise. In the field of modelling, the torque estimation of a Halbach array surface permanent magnet motor with a non-overlapping winding layout was improved by introducing an analytical two-dimensional subdomain model. A general method for determining the magnetically nonlinear two-axis dynamic models of rotary and linear synchronous reluctance machines and synchronous permanent magnet machines is introduced that considers the effects of slotting, mutual interaction between the slots and permanent magnets, saturation, cross saturation, and end effects. Advanced modern control solutions, such as neural network-based model reference adaptive control, fuzzy control, senseless control, torque/speed tracking control derived from the 3D non-holonomic integrator, including drift terms, maximum torque per ampere, and maximum efficiency characteristics, are applied to improve drive performance and overall system operation.
