Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study develops a theoretical model that explains how leaders come to adapt their leadership behaviors to achieve follower effectiveness. Mindfulness theory suggests that mindful individuals are better able to engage in self-regulation and I consider empathy, response flexibility, and emotional regulation as three self-regulatory processes in particular which likely impact the leader-follower relationship. I suggest that leaders who have the ability to self-regulate in these three ways will be better able to engage in leadership behavior characterized by adapting or flexing the specific types of leadership they demonstrate according to the needs of the situation and what their followers most require at a given time to perform at their best. When followers receive the type of situationally-appropriate support in the form of leader behavior, they are more effective (e.g. have higher job performance and extra-role performance). I validate a new trait and state measure of workplace mindfulness with multiple samples and utilize this new scale to collect data from leaders and followers from a government organization to test the theoretical relationships proposed in this study. I utilize an experience sampling methodology (ESM) design over 10 days to investigate the within-leader variation among variables in the study given theory suggesting the dynamic nature of the mindfulness, self-regulation, and situational leadership constructs which may not adequately be captured when data are collected at one point in time. Finally, I introduce organizational constraints as a moderator of the relationship between leader mindfulness and leader self- regulation in order to understand how stressors and strains outside the control of a leader may overload a leaders ability to ultimately self-regulate his/her behavior.

Book Synopsis Follower-Centered Perspectives on Leadership by : Mary Uhl-Bien
Download or read book Follower-Centered Perspectives on Leadership written by Mary Uhl-Bien and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of leadership theories and studies have tended to emphasize the personal background, personality traits, perceptions, and actions of leaders. From this perspective, the followers have been viewed as recipients or moderators of the leader's influence, and as vehicles for the actualization of the leader's vision, mission or goals. One of the major challengers of this dominant view was the late James R. Meindl. As an alternative to the leader-centric perspective on leadership, Meindl offered a follower-centric approach that views both leadership and its consequences as largely constructed by followers and hence influenced by followers' cognitive processes and inter-follower social influence processes. As a tribute to Jim Meindl and his contributions to the field of leadership studies, Information Age Publishing is releasing a book on follower-centered approaches to leadership. The book covers a wide variety of perspectives that acknowledge the active roles of followers in the leadership process. These include the psychoanalytical perspective, leadership categorization theory, social identity theory, the shared leadership approach, attribution of charisma through social networks, the role of the media in constructing images of the leader, the social construction of followership, vision implementation by followers and a post modern approach to followership. It is hoped that the volume will provoke readers to reflect upon and extend Jim Meindl's seminal work on followership. ars and practitioners curious about the nature of research on leadership, both those with much research exposure and those new to the field.
Book Synopsis A Communication Approach to Exploring Followers' Influence on Leaders' by : Cassandra Ray
Download or read book A Communication Approach to Exploring Followers' Influence on Leaders' written by Cassandra Ray and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, followership has increasingly captured the attention of academics. More recently, followership has begun to gain momentum in capturing the attention of practitioners. By far, the questions and demands for understanding effective followership and the ways followers influence leaders outweigh answers and solutions. Because followership, leadership, and follower-leader relationships are intricately connected and an inherently communicative phenomenon, advancing understanding of followership requires examining followers' influence on leaders from a communication perspective. The purpose of this study was to understand follower effectiveness and followers' influence on leaders by examining hypothesized relationships among followership characteristics, leader-follower relationship context, followership behaviors, and leader behavior, as evaluated by followers from a communication perspective. Using structural equation modelling methods, the results of this study reveal followership characteristics (i.e., self-regulation, empathy, and positive implicit leadership theories) influence leader-follower relationship quality (i.e., leader-member exchange; LMX) as well as follower communication behaviors (i.e., promotive voice and prohibitive voice). Moreover, results indicate follower prohibitive voice and LMX influence leaders' attention to followers (as explored through leader feedback-seeking behavior). The results of this study also indicate a need for more rigorous testing in terms of scale validity and reliability.

Book excerpt: The results suggest that leader trustworthiness is central to this relationship. Leaders with a broad behavioral repertoire were perceived as more trustworthy but differentiated leader behavior was found to build trust when it was perceived as adaptive but erode trust when it was perceived as inconsistent. Leader authenticity was not found to mitigate the negative effect of flexible leader behavior as hypothesized. These results and the implications for future research and practice are discussed.
Book Synopsis The Effective Executive by : Peter Drucker
Download or read book The Effective Executive written by Peter Drucker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measure of the executive, Peter Drucker reminds us, is the ability to 'get the right things done'. Usually this involves doing what other people have overlooked, as well as avoiding what is unproductive. He identifies five talents as essential to effectiveness, and these can be learned; in fact, they must be learned just as scales must be mastered by every piano student regardless of his natural gifts. Intelligence, imagination and knowledge may all be wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that convert these into results. One of the talents is the management of time. Another is choosing what to contribute to the particular organization. A third is knowing where and how to apply your strength to best effect. Fourth is setting up the right priorities. And all of them must be knitted together by effective decision-making. How these can be developed forms the main body of the book. The author ranges widely through the annals of business and government to demonstrate the distinctive skill of the executive. He turns familiar experience upside down to see it in new perspective. The book is full of surprises, with its fresh insights into old and seemingly trite situations.
Book Synopsis Strategic Followership by : D. Zoogah
Download or read book Strategic Followership written by D. Zoogah and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of followership is not new, to the extent that it has been around since the beginning of time. In the organizational literature, followership (a complementary role to leadership) was ignored until recently, when scholars observed that followers play as much of a role as leaders in their relationship to each other. Followership is a role in which an individual succumbs to the influence of another person, deemed a leader. In Strategic Followership, Dr. Zoogah focuses on the recent phenomenon of strategic followership, where an individual behaves in response to a social problem either adaptively or transcendentally. In this ground-breaking work, he explores this type of followership and illustrates the various ways it can happen.

Book Synopsis The Connecting Leader by : Zahira Jaser
Download or read book The Connecting Leader written by Zahira Jaser and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous books of the Leadership Horizon Series showed unequivocally how both leaders and followers play an equally important part in the co-production of leadership outcomes, and how leader and follower identities are fluid, so that the same individual can enact both at different times. This book stretches the notion of leadership a step further by exploring the co-enactment of both roles, identities, and positions of leader and follower by one same individual. This individual is defined as a connecting leader, as in this co-enactment he/she functions as connector between different leadership relationships. The concept of connecting leader emerges from the observation that most individuals in organizations engage in the leader-follower role co-enactment: managers, pulled between executives and reportees; CEOs, between the board and the head of departments; or employees involved in cross functional teams, leading and following in different degrees, subject to their expertise. Yet, despite its pervasiveness this concept is at best under theorized by the literature, which, dominated by dyadic and romanticized views, mostly presents the roles as enacted by separate individuals facing each other. To advance our understanding of connecting leaders the editor proposes to shift our focus on leadership in three ways: to unpack the interconnectedness and interplay of leader and follower identities; to investigate the tensions arising from the co-enactment and how these can be overcome; to widen the way in which we study leadership, through new configurations (e.g. leadership triads) and ontologies; and finally to consider the similarities between leading and following. The book chapters are organized to mirror these areas of exploration. Understanding leadership from a perspective that acknowledges that many individuals in organizations are not just leaders or followers, but both, democratizes the way we theorize leadership, and moves us further away from the temptation to romanticize it.
