Book excerpt: Using tissue-cultured technology is a potentially important way for smallholder banana farmers to improve their yields and income. In the situation of the impoverishing effects of high HIV/AIDS-prevalence in a rural banana-farming community, this applies even more. The research documented in this book examines the balance between required inputs and potential benefits of applying the tissue-cultured technology among HIV/AIDS-affected and non-affected households in Maragua district, Central Kenya, using a livelihood approach. The results show that adoption of the technology and its continued use differs according to the resources endowment of the farming households. Lack of financial and physical capital, notably a water tank, inhibits adoption, irrespective of HIV/AIDS-status. However, households headed by elderly females dominate among the poor households and the HIV/AIDS-affected households. This illustrates how HIV/AIDS interfaces with poverty and, thereby, indirectly with the feasibility of sustainable technology adoption. The research also shows that livelihood decisions and strategies of farming households are influenced by land tenure status (having title deeds or not) and labour constraints at the household level. The latter arise as a consequence of HIV/AIDS-related morbidity and mortality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the first in a series on HIV/AIDS and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa with the overall objective of providing a resource base on issues of rural development in a broad sense in the times of HIV/AIDS. This first book discusses the impact of the epidemic as it has emerged over the last decades at different levels of the agricultural sector, namely the farming system level, the livelihood level, and the household level. In a further step, impact on the agricultural estate sector as well as pastoralism is discussed. One overarching issue that emerges is the importance of gender attributes to adequately understand and address HIV/AIDS impact - the topic at the centre of the second part of the series. The text ends with a discussion of HIV/AIDS in relation to other shocks that befall rural livelihoods. It is followed by an annotated bibliography.

Book excerpt: This last part of the AWLAE series on HIV/AIDS and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa focuses on the epidemic as a challenge to human development in general and rural development in particular. In the face of the impact of the epidemic as described in parts one and two of the series, the agricultural sector can play an important role in mitigating some of its effects. Strategies for agricultural intervention are of particular importance in sub-Saharan Africa, given the fact that most of the countries hardest hit by the epidemic are heavily reliant on agriculture. Different agricultural sector based mitigation strategies are discussed. It is further argued, however, that such interventions need to be complemented by interventions from the health and other sectors, in particular by treatment regimes including access to anti-retroviral drugs. The text is followed by an annotated bibliography.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of Zambia, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MACO), has requested FAO Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) assistance in awareness raising and capacity building of senior agriculture staff in the Ministry for addressing HIV/AIDS concerns and mitigating the negative impact of HIV/AIDS on agricultural production and household food security. Given the cross-cutting nature of HIV/AIDS, it is important to identify possible interventions that are within the mandate of MACO. Therefore, this document will outline an Integrated Framework for Mitigation that would guide future action by MACO. The mitigation framework has been developed on a pilot basis for Choma district, Southern Province and started with a stakeholders’ workshop in Choma. The output of the workshop were the following proposed mitigation strategies i) promote labour saving practices; ii) promote low labour- low risk commercial agro businesses; iii) enhance food security and nutrition among HIV/AIDS affected households; iv) support orphans and vulnerable children; and v) promote appropriate extension messages to vulnerable households. Based on these identified thematic areas, participatory planning workshops were organised in four communities. Data was collected from individuals and households–selected according to four household types: female headed households with orphans, male headed households with orphans, female headed households with people living with HIV/AIDS, and male headed household with people living HIV/AIDS.
