Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify a potentiation effect on 30 meter (m) fly sprint performance in collegiate sprinters and jumpers (M=21, W=5) following an acute bout of whole-body vibration. The WBV protocol consisted of one 30 second bout at 50 Hz, ~3 mm amplitude, and 60 seconds rest before a 30m fly sprint. Sprint times were measured using timing gates, and characteristics of strength and power were measured using a force plate. Analysis included measures of jump height, peak power, peak force, and rate of force development. Each subject participated in 3 separate trials using randomized treatment sessions over 3 months of preparation training. The control condition consisted of no vibration and WBV treatment 1 and 2 incorporated vibration. Statistics comparing the average sprint times showed no treatment effects. The results of this study indicate that WBV at 50 Hz and ~3 mm amplitude has no effect on sprint times.

Subjects consisted of 20 female athletes currently performing strength and conditioning programs. Subjects random-ly completed 6 sessions of 20 body wt squats to tempo in one of three conditions (CON r UST r or WBV) followed by 4 min passive rest and three each of the CMJs and SJs. Testing was performed on non-consecutive days. Subjects were assessed for jump height (JH) r max force (F) r rate-offorce development (RFD)r max power (P) r and vertical takeoff velocity (V). Post testing r the CMJ and SJ in each condition were analyzed for eccentric utilization ratio (EUR). There was no significant interaction in the current study (p > .05) There were no significant main effects for condition (p > .05). Significant main effects (p .05) were found for JHr RFDr P r and V for jump type (CMJ SJ) In Division III female athletes UST and WBV did not improve performance on the CMJ or SJ. On an acute basis r the use of UST or WBV was not shown to be beneficial for increasing Fr RFDr P r Vr or for improving the EUR.

Being flexible not only prevents injuries, but improves overall athletic performance. The purpose of this investigation is to examine how Whole Body Vibration (WBV), an increasingly popular method of exercise, affects acute flexibility of the hamstring muscle group. The results of this case study showed that there was a significant increase in hamstring flexibility when short term WBV was coupled with stretching. It is with hope that these findings along with the development of the measuring apparatus will aid future studies of hamstring injury prevention and rehabilitation.

This study examined the acute effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) on passive and dynamic flexibility in young, female gymnasts. Participants (n = 27, Junior Olympic levels 5-10) served as their own control. Measurements of passive and dynamic flexibility were obtained using the TOPS forward split testing method to examine passive flexibility and dynamic flexibility was measured via split jumps that were analyzed with video and Dartfish software. According to randomized order, all participants completed a stretching protocol either with the WBV platform turned on (VIB) or off (C) separated by 48 h. Participants performed 4 sets of three stretches on the WBV platform. An ANCOVA was performed (using height, weight, age, years of experience, and gymnastics level as covariates). Significant improvements were found in passive flexibility for both VIB and C conditions, but there was no significant difference between the two stretching conditions (p = 0.17). Book excerpt: High-intensity intermittent or resistance activity for a short period of time causes an increased break down of energy stores and accumulation of metabolic by-products. Increased metabolic disturbances may lead to decreased muscle contractile function which eventually will lead to muscle fatigue. Sufficient recovery time is needed for optimal competitive performance and optimizing the ability to tolerate high-intensity, various lengths and duration training loads. There are a number of recovery modalities available that have been used between training sessions, pre- and post- training, and between competitions. In order to evaluate vibration as a recovery aid that contributes to improved performance, three studies were conducted. The first study evaluated the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) and WBV plus cooling on lower-body peak and mean anaerobic performance, leg volume, perceived recovery, and muscle soreness. The second study evaluated the effects of WBV and upper-body vibration (UBV) on upper-body performance, perceived recovery and muscle soreness, and the third study evaluated the effect of WBV on sprint performance, leg volume and perceived recovery. Healthy and physically active male and female volunteers participated in the studies. In a repeated measures, counterbalanced design, participants completed fatiguing exercise, each recovery treatment and performance test. As indicated by the group mean data, results of the first study suggested possible psychological but not performance enhancing benefits after the use of WBV and WBVC as a recovery method. The findings of the second study suggest no psychological or physiological benefits using WBV and UBV as a recovery modality. The results of the third study suggest no benefits for WBV in enhancing recovery or sprint performance. However, while actual recovery was not enhanced, perceived recovery was better after WBV compared to no vibration. Even though actual recovery or performance was not enhanced by the addition of WBV to the recovery, psychological perception of better recovery may be of some benefit for training or competition. It appears that acute exposure to WBV does not enhance performance under the conditions of this study.

Twenty college aged subjects participated in 10 intervals of whole-body vibration (WBV) at a frequency of 26 Hz and amplitude of 5 mm. Each interval consisted of 60 s of WBV in a half-squat followed by 60 s of rest. After 5 intervals, subjects had 6 min of rest before the final 5 intervals. Each subject also participated in the control which included the same 10 intervals in a half-squat without the WBV. Tests were conducted to assess electromechanical delay (EMD) and vertical jump at baseline, during the 6 min rest period and immediately after the treatment and control. EMD was measured using tibial nerve stimulation and a force plate. EMD was recorded as the lag time between the initiation of gastrocnemeus stimulation and plantar flexion force production. Vertical jump was measured using a force plate and subjects2 flight time. The factorial ANOVA results showed no differences between groups, the control and WBV treatment, for both EMD (F (2, 38) = 1.385, p = 0.263) and vertical jump (F (2, 38) = 0.040, p
