Book Synopsis Acupuncture as an Alternative Therapy to Opioid Use in Migraines by : Ann Yurco
Download or read book Acupuncture as an Alternative Therapy to Opioid Use in Migraines written by Ann Yurco and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is strong evidence that alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, are just as effective or more appropriate than over-the-counter or prescription medications to control pain as well as nausea and vomiting in people who suffer from migraine headaches. In some instances, evidence shows these medications can cause rebound or secondary headaches. Research shows patients who have used or overused medications such as opioids for chronic pain have been successfully treated with acupuncture as a viable alternative. Evidence-based research supports the use of acupuncture as a safe, non-invasive alternative form of therapy. Several studies have shown acupuncture is effective for treating migraine pain. This paper is intended to describe chronic migraine pain, provide details in regard to a solution for people who may not be able to, or should not, take medications due to side effects or complications and educate patients about the complications associated with opioid use and to inform them about acupuncture treatment and its benefits for long-term use. Patients were asked to fill out a pain assessment questionnaire as well as keep a 12-month long pain journal in which they describe the onset of symptoms, pain levels, intensity, duration and frequency of their migraine episodes in order to determine whether or not the acupuncture treatments they received reduced pain levels significantly. The patients were given information about alternative treatments as well as information in regard to the overuse of medications, including opioids.
Book Synopsis WHO Standard Acupuncture Point Locations in the Western Pacific Region by :
Download or read book WHO Standard Acupuncture Point Locations in the Western Pacific Region written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acupuncture has been practiced for more than 2500 years in the Western Pacific region and has become a global therapeutic method in recent decades. However, it was reported that acupuncturists differed by up to 25% in the acupuncture points they used, raising doubts and uncertainty regarding the efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment, as well as causing difficulties in the fields of acupuncture research and education. Member States therefore increasingly began to demand standardization in acupuncture point locations. Responding to this request, the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office initiated a project to reach consensus on acupuncture point locations and thus convened 11 serial meetings resulting in these guidelines. This Standard acupuncture point locations in the Western Pacific Region stipulates the methodology for locating acupuncture points on the surface of the human body, as well as the locations of 361 acupuncture points. The Standard is applicable for teaching, research, clinical service, publication, and academic exchanges involving acupuncture.

Download or read book Headaches in Women written by Mark Green and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women suffer from headaches far more than men. According to the World Health Organization, migraine is one of the most disabling medical conditions. The understanding of the pathophysiology of migraine has changed dramatically over the past decade, leading to more rational and targeted treatments. Since most migraineurs are young women, use of contraception, management of headaches with menstruation, pregnancy, lactation, and menopause are important issues addressed in this text. Headaches are often inherited, and, as such, the book also discusses genetic issues, particularly relevant in this era of customized medicine. The hormonal management of transgenders is important as many will experience severe headaches during their transitions. Comorbidities, including psychiatric syndromes and strokes, are also presented in detail. This text will be of interest to all practitioners who manage women with headaches.
