Book Synopsis Levels in Clause Linkage by : Tasaku Tsunoda
Download or read book Levels in Clause Linkage written by Tasaku Tsunoda and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a cross-linguistic exploration of the use of clause linkage markers in causal, conditional, and concessive sentences. Employing a five-level classification of clause linkage based on semantic and pragmatic grounds, it shows that, within individual languages different markers exhibit different distributions on the five levels. Also, the rich evidence presented from seventeen languages from many parts of the world documents that these distributions present commonalities as well as differences across the languages of the sample.

Book Synopsis Factual Nonsense by : Darren Coffield
Download or read book Factual Nonsense written by Darren Coffield and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joshua's gallery 'Factual Nonsense' was quite unlike any other. Called a 'crazy powerhouse of ideas' it was a kind of cultural think-tank located in the then run-down East End area known as Shoreditch, which would later become a cohesive and creative hub (since rebranded as 'Silicon Roundabout'). Joshua was the driving force that turned the area's fortune and reputation around. Under the auspices of his Factual Nonsense banner, he held some of the most important and influential public art events of the late 20th Century. The first of these was an anarchic swipe at the notion of a traditional village fete called 'A Fete Worse than Death', with some of the biggest but the still yet unknown stars of the art world, including Damien Hirst and Angus Fairhurst, famously dressed as clowns and produced the first spin paintings at the Fete (for sale for the princely sum of £1). Whilst Hirst's spin machine has, from lowly beginnings at the Fete, gone on to appear recently at the World Economic Forum, a billionaire's playground, creating spin paintings for rich oligarch's wives as entertainment, Joshua was to die alone, poverty stricken back in 1996 on the cusp of international fame. Never reaping the rewards that were to come from the economic upturn and Charles Saatchi's Sensation exhibition, his death was a marker for the beginning of an era of international fame and success for his contemporaries and the end of the 'classic' avant-garde. The list of the seventy or so names of people I have interviewed for the book over the past year reads like a who's who of the contemporary art world, with contributions from the likes of Jay Jopling, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gary Hume, Gavin Turk, Maureen Paley and Sir Peter Blake. Although Joshua never achieved the recognition that he deserved in his lifetime, he was a pivotal figure in the London art scene during the early 1990's. Josh moved into Hoxton and opened a gallery there and started a veritable art movement, while the place was a neglected London backwater. His lasting legacy was to bring together a group of artists and gallerists and create what is now known as the YBA scene. The text is illustrated with previously unseen photographs, letters and extracts from Joshua's diaries, which give insight into his thought process as well as the deterioration of his mental state towards the end of his brief but eventful life.

Book Synopsis A Critical Companion to Terry Gilliam by : Sabine Planka
Download or read book A Critical Companion to Terry Gilliam written by Sabine Planka and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Critical Companion to Terry Gilliam provides a fresh, up-to-date exploration of the director’s films and artistic practices, ranging from his first film Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) to his recently released and latest film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018). This volume presents Gilliam as a director whose films weave together an avant-garde cinematic style, imaginative exaggeration, and social critique. Consequently, while his films can seem artistically chaotic and thus have the effect of frustrating and upsetting the viewer, the essays in this volume show that this is part of a very disciplined creative plan to achieve the defamiliarization of various accepted notions of human and social life.
Download or read book Story Smart written by Kendall Haven and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind book reveals the secrets of a story's power to persuade, inspire, influence, and to teach. Our brains have been evolutionarily hardwired to think, to make sense, and to understand in simple—but hidden—story terms. You'll discover the Neural Story Net, the Make Sense Mandate, Motive Matching, and the Story Influence Line—and understand how these powerful concepts control listener/reader engagement, attention, and the impact your communications will exert. You'll learn that what reaches the conscious mind of your target audience is significantly different from what first reached their eyes and ears—and that you can control that internal, neural process. This easy to use guide is organized into four parts: the neuroscience of narrative; your story tools; how narratives exert influence (changing beliefs, attitudes, values, etc.); and the straightforward process of creating "Story Smart" stories.

Book Synopsis Truthful Fictions: Conversations with American Biographical Novelists by : Michael Lackey
Download or read book Truthful Fictions: Conversations with American Biographical Novelists written by Michael Lackey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new collection of interviews, some of America's most prominent novelists identify the key intellectual developments that led to the rise of the contemporary biographical novel, discuss the kind of historical 'truth' this novel communicates, indicate why this narrative form is superior to the traditional historical novel, and reflect on the ideas and characters central to their individual works. These interviews do more than just define an innovative genre of contemporary fiction. They provide a precise way of understanding the complicated relationship and pregnant tensions between contextualized thinking and historical representation, interdisciplinary studies and 'truth' production, and fictional reality and factual constructions. By focusing on classical and contemporary debates regarding the nature of the historical novel, this volume charts the forces that gave birth to a new incarnation of this genre.
