Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion to the author's earlier book Designing an Older Adult Ministry (Discipleship Resources, 1999), this book will provide new information and outline ways to develop and strengthen ministries by, with, and for older adults that can, and will, enhance the spiritual growth and well-being of people of all ages. The church is beginning to recognize that there are vast numbers of older people in its membership. It is becoming aware of its indebtedness to them for the leadership, support, service, and faith that has made the church of today possible. The church is uniquely positioned to help older adults respond to the challenges of aging; to see the tremendous potentialities in the lives of older adult for making the church and community better; and to assist older people as they experience new meaning and purpose in their later lives. Chapters include "Why Older-Adult Ministries?"; "Understanding the Aging Process"; "Aging and the Spiritual Journey"; "The New Seniors: Boomers?"; "Intentional Ministry by, with, and for Older Adults"; "Organizing for Intentional Ministry in the Local Church"; "Organizing for Intentional Ministry in the Conference"; "Congregational Care Ministry"; "Additional Ideas for Intentional Ministry"; and "Trends in Aging." Appendixes include a "Facts about Aging" quiz, information on creating and using older adult surveys, and suggested resources for further reading and study.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the church depends on the support of effective and dynamic Christian leaders. Churches do acknowledge that there is a lack of innovative and formal processes for developing leaders for church ministries. Leaders may be articulate, but have not embraced leadership skills. This is especially true for the leadership of senior ministries since we live in a youth culture society. There is an absence of ministries that focus on seniors who are over the age of sixty. There is a need to see the potential that seniors have for contributing viable service to the church and community. Seniors cannot be characterized as being the same. Some older adults see themselves as declining while others see themselves as active and vigorous. The myths and untruths about aging can be debunked by accepting the realities of aging. Seniors can help others see the realities of aging by expressing what they need and want. Investigating church leadership and the characteristics of senior adults revealed how an intentional senior ministry can be integrated into the church. Using questionnaires, intense group sessions and case studies, data was collected from an urban African American church that has a century of history and tradition. Information came from two sources: (a) church leaders; and (b) senior adults, age 65+. The investigation produced a Senior Action Plan (SAP) that will assist the church in organizing a ministry for seniors. The plan can be a model for all churches and denominations. Churches who do not recognize the new face of senior congregations will be left behind and miss out on opportunities for service.

Book excerpt: Hospitality and blessing, says Rev. William R. Nirote, are two markers of God's people found in Scripture. Followers gathered to break bread, pray, and learn together often in someone's home. These were places of security, peace, and God's welcome and blessing. Honoring ancient traditions of hospitality and blessing, Nirote, who has blessed several homes during his ministry, has written Bless This Home, a practical guide and ritual for clergy and lay leaders who are called upon to bless homes. The service includes: Gathering The Blessing Blessings for Individual Rooms of the Home Closing Scripture passages Bless This Home will turn the ritual of blessing a home into a celebration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The rapid aging of Korean and American society . . . has presented many significant challenges and opportunities for Korean churches and Korean-American churches alike. Many of existing church programs for older adults are no longer adequate or relevant for our graying congregations; consequently, there has been a growing need for a new model of senior adult ministry that can meet the diverse needs and expectations of older adults in an aged society. Inspired by the Rev. Dr. Gentzler’s ‘intentional ministry by, with, and for older adults,’ and based on A. Maslow’s theory of Hierarchy of Needs, the present paper has suggested a model of senior adult ministry shaped with the following three dimensions: ministry that provides a sense of belonging (community-oriented ministry), ministry that promotes a sense of usefulness (mission-and-service-oriented ministry), ministry that guides discovery of meaning and purpose (spirituality-oriented ministry). By applying this model of senior adult ministry, the present study has designed and implemented a project for boosting the integration of senior newcomers to the life of Korean Church of Atlanta UMC. The project consists of three programs: promoting senior newcomers’ participation in small groups, ‘Bible Stories with Hamuni & Habuji,’ and spiritual life review/spiritual autobiography writing group." -- Leaf [2].

Life expectancy in the U.S. has increased from 47 years in 1900 to 77 years in 2000. The number of people age 65 years or older is expected to double in the next 25 years. The Graying of the Church is based on extensive research which indicates that leaders of older adult ministries want help in identifying new ministry models, ways to motivate older adults, and general resource information. All of these areas (and more ) are addressed by Gentzler in a very readable way. Gentzler's work addresses church leaders who plan and provide ministry with older adults; clergy; parish nurses; Christian educators; Stephen ministers; nurture, health, & welfare teams/committees; evangelism teams/committees.
