Book Synopsis The Art of the Network by : Paul D. McLean
Download or read book The Art of the Network written by Paul D. McLean and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing letters to powerful people to win their favor and garner rewards such as political office, tax relief, and recommendations was an institution in Renaissance Florence; the practice was an important tool for those seeking social mobility, security, and recognition by others. In this detailed study of political and social patronage in fifteenth-century Florence, Paul D. McLean shows that patronage was much more than a pursuit of specific rewards. It was also a pursuit of relationships and of a self defined in relation to others. To become independent in Renaissance Florence, one first had to become connected. With The Art of the Network, McLean fills a gap in sociological scholarship by tracing the historical antecedents of networking and examining the concept of self that accompanies it. His analysis of patronage opens into a critique of contemporary theories about social networks and social capital, and an exploration of the sociological meaning of “culture.” McLean scrutinized thousands of letters to and from Renaissance Florentines. He describes the social protocols the letters reveal, paying particular attention to the means by which Florentines crafted credible presentations of themselves. The letters, McLean contends, testify to the development not only of new forms of self-presentation but also of a new kind of self to be presented: an emergent, “modern” conception of self as an autonomous agent. They also bring to the fore the importance that their writers attached to concepts of honor, and the ways that they perceived themselves in relation to the Florentine state.

The main task which the book will set itself will be to examine as fairly and as fully as possible the likelihood of the survival of original, authentic tradition within the Christian Church outside the Bible, to see whether there are solid grounds for concluding that independently of the New Testament any considerable or significant amount of original and trustworthy information about Jesus . . . could have survived, and whether it actually has survived. --From the first chapter, Oral Tradition

Book Synopsis Moral Blindness in Business by : Jacob Dahl Rendtorff
Download or read book Moral Blindness in Business written by Jacob Dahl Rendtorff and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jacob Dahl Rendtorff investigates moral blindness in business and public administration based on Hannah Arendt’s concept of banality of evil in her famous report on the Nazi-criminal Adolf Eichmann trail in Jerusalem in 1961. Moral blindness and evil in management is instrumental wrongdoing inflicted upon human beings as a violation of their dignity and humanity. Organizational evil in business, bureaucracies and public administration is analysed with focus on obedience to authority and systemic role conformity of managers and administrators. This includes the critical question about how concepts of banality of evil and moral blindness can explain ethical insensibility and lack of moral understanding in business and administration. Rendtorff proposes a humanistic vision of management and ethical leadership. Moral thinking, responsibility and moral judgment is essential in management and governance in business and administration. This book is a must-read for academics and practitioners studying and working in philosophy of management, business ethics, political philosophy, administration ethics and corporate social responsibility.
