Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the continuum hypothesis still open? If we interpret it as finding the laws of cardinal arithmetic (really exponentiation since addition and multiplication were classically solved), it was thought to be essentially solved by the independence results of Godel and Cohen (and Easton) with some isolated positive results (likeGalvin-Hajnal). It was expected that only more independence results remained to be proved. The author has come to change his view. This enables us to get new results for the conventional cardinal arithmetic, thus supporting the interest in our view. We also find other applications, extend older methods of using normal fiters and prove the existence of Jonsson algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, it became apparent that a large number of the most interesting structures and phenomena of the world can be described by networks. To develop a mathematical theory of very large networks is an important challenge. This book describes one recent approach to this theory, the limit theory of graphs, which has emerged over the last decade. The theory has rich connections with other approaches to the study of large networks, such as ``property testing'' in computer science and regularity partition in graph theory. It has several applications in extremal graph theory, including the exact formulations and partial answers to very general questions, such as which problems in extremal graph theory are decidable. It also has less obvious connections with other parts of mathematics (classical and non-classical, like probability theory, measure theory, tensor algebras, and semidefinite optimization). This book explains many of these connections, first at an informal level to emphasize the need to apply more advanced mathematical methods, and then gives an exact development of the theory of the algebraic theory of graph homomorphisms and of the analytic theory of graph limits. This is an amazing book: readable, deep, and lively. It sets out this emerging area, makes connections between old classical graph theory and graph limits, and charts the course of the future. --Persi Diaconis, Stanford University This book is a comprehensive study of the active topic of graph limits and an updated account of its present status. It is a beautiful volume written by an outstanding mathematician who is also a great expositor. --Noga Alon, Tel Aviv University, Israel Modern combinatorics is by no means an isolated subject in mathematics, but has many rich and interesting connections to almost every area of mathematics and computer science. The research presented in Lovasz's book exemplifies this phenomenon. This book presents a wonderful opportunity for a student in combinatorics to explore other fields of mathematics, or conversely for experts in other areas of mathematics to become acquainted with some aspects of graph theory. --Terence Tao, University of California, Los Angeles, CA Laszlo Lovasz has written an admirable treatise on the exciting new theory of graph limits and graph homomorphisms, an area of great importance in the study of large networks. It is an authoritative, masterful text that reflects Lovasz's position as the main architect of this rapidly developing theory. The book is a must for combinatorialists, network theorists, and theoretical computer scientists alike. --Bela Bollobas, Cambridge University, UK

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents results on the case of the Ramsey problem for the uncountable: When does a partition of a square of an uncountable set have an uncountable homogeneous set? This problem most frequently appears in areas of general topology, measure theory, and functional analysis. Building on his solution of one of the two most basic partition problems in general topology, the ``S-space problem,'' the author has unified most of the existing results on the subject and made many improvements and simplifications. The first eight sections of the book require basic knowldege of naive set theory at the level of a first year graduate or advanced undergraduate student. The book may also be of interest to the exclusively set-theoretic reader, for it provides an excellent introduction to the subject of forcing axioms of set theory, such as Martin's axiom and the Proper forcing axiom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a Christian escape from a lion? How quickly can a rumour spread? Can you fool an airline into accepting oversize baggage? Recreational mathematics is full of frivolous questions where the mathematician's art can be brought to bear. But play often has a purpose. In mathematics, it can sharpen skills, provide amusement, or simply surprise, and books of problems have been the stock-in-trade of mathematicians for centuries. This collection is designed to be sipped from, rather than consumed in one sitting. The questions range in difficulty: the most challenging offer a glimpse of deep results that engage mathematicians today; even the easiest prompt readers to think about mathematics. All come with solutions, many with hints, and most with illustrations. Whether you are an expert, or a beginner or an amateur mathematician, this book will delight for a lifetime.

Book excerpt: The walks on ordinals and analysis of their characteristics is a subject matter started by the author some twenty years ago in order to disprove a particular extension of the Ramsey theorem. A further analysis has shown however that the resulting method is quite useful in detecting critical mathematical objects in contexts where only rough classifications are possible. The book gives a careful and comprehensive account of the method and gathers many of these applications in a unified and comprehensive manner.

All contributing authors are eminent academicians, scientists, researchers and scholars in their respective fields, hailing from around the world. This is the second conference on mathematics and computing organized at Haldia Institute of Technology, India. The conference has emerged as a powerful forum, offering researchers a venue to discuss, interact and collaborate, and stimulating the advancement of mathematics and its applications in computer science. The book will allow aspiring researchers to update their knowledge of cryptography, algebra, frame theory, optimizations, stochastic processes, compressive sensing, functional analysis, complex variables, etc. Educating future consumers, users, producers, developers and researchers in mathematics and computing is a challenging task and essential to the development of modern society. Hence, mathematics and its applications in computing are of vital importance to a broad range of communities, including mathematicians and computing professionals across different educational levels and disciplines. In current research, modeling and simulation, making decisions under uncertainty and pattern recognition have become very common. Professionals across different educational levels and disciplines need exposure to advances in mathematics and computing. In this context, this book presents research papers on applicable areas of current interest. It also includes papers in which experts summarize research findings, such as signal processing and analysis and low-rank-matrix approximation for solving large systems, which will emerge as powerful tools for further research. These new advances and cutting-edge research in the fields of mathematics and their applications to computing are of paramount importance for young researchers.
