Book excerpt: Practical Airport Operations, Safety, and Emergency Management: Protocols for Today and the Future focuses on the airport itself, not the aircraft, manufacturers, designers, or even the pilots. The book explores the safety of what's been called ‘the most expensive piece of pavement in any city’— the facility that operates, maintains, and ensures the safety of millions of air passengers every year. The book is organized into three helpful sections, each focusing on one of the sectors described in the title. Section One: Airport Safety, explores the airport environment, then delves into safety management systems. Section Two: Airport Operations, continues the conversation on safety management systems before outlining airside and landside operations in depth, while Section Three: Airport Emergency Management, is a careful, detailed exploration of the topic, ending with a chapter on the operational challenges airport operations managers can expect to face in the future. Written by trusted experts in the field, users will find this book to be a vital resource that provides airport operations managers and students with the information, protocols, and strategies they need to meet the unique challenges associated with running an airport. Addresses the four areas of airport management: safety, operations, emergency management, and future challenges together in one book Written by leading professionals in the field with extensive training, teaching, and practical experience in airport operations Includes section on future challenges, including spaceport, unmanned aerial vehicles, and integrated incident command Ancillary materials for readers to reinforce concepts and instructors teaching operations courses Focuses on the topics of safety, operations, emergency management, and what personnel and students studying the topic can expect to face in the future

The guidance addresses identifying the parameters to be monitored and discusses the appropriateness of various monitoring methods and instrument types to meet an airport's specific needs. The guidebook also provides recommendations for setup, operation, and maintenance of each monitoring method. The guidebook also includes helpful appendices that define relevant technical terms and provide sample outreach materials to help communicate the selection process to nontechnical stakeholders. Technical information on various on-site monitoring methods is provided in a series of fact sheets. These fact sheets, which are organized by the parameter being monitored, describe key factors such as how the method works, its current level of adoption within the industry, implementation considerations, cost, and advantages/disadvantages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airport collaborative decision making (ACDM) is a process in which the stakeholders of operations--airport operators, the air traffic control tower staff, flight operators, ground handlers, fixed-base operators, and others--share information to improve policies, planning, real-time coordination, and decisions regarding operations. The TRB Airport Cooperative Research Program's ACRP Research Report 229: Airport Collaborative Decision Making (ACDM) to Manage Adverse Conditions proposes a step-by-step approach to achieve ACDM implementation, supported by templates and a workbook, to involve stakeholders, define common goals and objectives, appoint leadership for the initiative, tailor a vision that serves the local needs, and develop a roadmap of successful projects delivering practical improvements. Of the airports surveyed as part of this project, 67 percent do not hold regular meetings with the flight operators. Interviews with staff at individual airports show a lack of real-time coordination between the stakeholders. However, nearly all the survey participants responded affirmatively that they would consider holding such meetings to improve collaboration because it is commonly understood that more cooperation can help address local issues and improve overall efficiency.
