I do not suppose that the cross-lots pilgrim who blazed the trail I fol lowed that midsummer day was consciously making a path for his successors. His choice was primarily an individual matter. He was suiting his own convenience or pleasure. He was thinking and deciding in personal terms. Exactly. And why shrink from the logic of that? Until one identifies with his own felicity the needs of others; until their cries ring in his. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land Across the Sea I Wonder how many of you from childhood, like the writer, have hoped to some day have the opportunity of visiting the lands across the sea. Come with me, in imagination, and we will board an ocean liner bound for Bremen, Germany, and cross the great Atlantic Ocean which separates the old from the new world. Such a hustling and hustling preparing for the long journey. The hours fairly fly on wings. The days are woefully short in which to accomplish the "thousand and one" things which come up at the last moment. Friends and neighbors drop in to say "bon voyage"; a few tears are shed and we are Anally on our way. Upon our arrival in the great metropolis of New York we take careful inventory of what will be needed on a sea voyage. It being our first crossing we are obliged to purchase a steamer trunk and steamer caps. We spend a very pleasant morning in the shops making our purchases. In the afternoon we go to Hoboken to have a peep at the great ship that is to bear us across the water. We are like children in our eager anticipation, for remember it is our first view of a real ocean liner. Taking the subway to Hoboken we soon arrive at the pier where our vessel lies at anchor. Such a "hurley-burley" of noise and confusion of teams, teamsters and endless trucks of luggage. You would think the entire population of Greater New York was moving. Threading our way through an everchanging throng we arrive at the gangway, where we ask if we may go on board. Consent is courteously given. A friend familiar with foreign travel has given us some valuable information derived from his own personal experience in fourteen crossings. There were no passengers on deck at that cold early hour, and Kate Carmody, when she struggled up the companion-way and viewed the empty steerage, was pleased at the thought that hers would be a solitary watch for the land. We reach Deadwood, that once wicked city, at about '9 p. M. And, of course, wonder if we will be waylaid before a lodging place can be found, but happily, we do not find it such a. Bad city after all. We soon find comfortable quarters and sleep, only to be awakened by Old Sol dashing a ray of gold into our face. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marks of Lincoln on Our Land Marks of Lincoln on Our Land is a study in pictures of the life of Abraham Lincoln - an extraordinary life which be came a unique chapter in history and which has been recorded across our country in a phenomenal number of landmarks, statues and memorials. These shrines and markers which posterity has erected to honor the Great Emancipator have followed in his wake wherever he went in his brilliant rise from log cabin to White House, from rural obscurity to Pres idency, from frontier innocence to national tragedy. This pictorial treasury has a three-fold purpose: to serve as a guide book to the markers and memorials themselves; to relate in its essential outline the story of Lincoln's life, which is, indeed, most interestingly traced in the very events the memorials commemorate; and finally, to stimulate its readers to travel in person the historic trail of the Lincoln monuments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip Through Headline Land Stranger - All this is true, we have noted these things from Saturn, while most of your own people are blind to them. This regrettable condition, which amounts to depriving America of its own intellect and its own knowledge, seems to have arisen partly because your newspapers are content to take second-hand carbon copy versions of the news of the rest of the world from English correspondents, and partly because your magazines are snobbish enough to consider any little loose-thinking, unreliable English publicist a great authority, for whose articles they scramble, while rejecting the writings of American students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Redemption of Kenneth Galt His gaze was drawn perforce to the face of the young organist, who sat staring listlessly over the top of her hymn-book. She had a face and form of rare beauty and grace. Her features were most regular; her skin clear; her eyes were large, long-lashed, dreamy, and of the color of violets. Her hair was a living mass of silken bronze. She looks tired and worried, was Dearing's half professional comment. Perhaps her mother is worse, and she sat up last night. Poor Dora! She has certainly had a lot to contend with since her father died. I'll wait for her after church and ask about her mother. The service over, he made his way through the throng down the aisle toward the door. He was quite popular, and there was many a hand to shake and many a warm greeting to respond to, but he finally succeeded in reach ing a point in the shaded church-yard which Dora Barry would pass on her way home, and there he waited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Through the Land of Burns To ramble through the land of Burns is an easy matter; but to describe it, so as to make the reader enjoy it in a description, is a somewhat difficult task. Notwithstanding after considerable misgiving, the writer has essayed it, and in following the footsteps of his illustrious countryman, robert burns, from the cottage of his birth to the scene of his death and burial, he has called attention not only to the rich natural beauty of the various districts celebrated by the residence and muse of the Poet, but also to their historical and traditional associations, and to passages in his life and writings inseparablv connected with them. Having done this, and pointed out numerous interesting objects, he lays no claim to originality, and aspires to no higher merit than that of having gathered a posy of other men's flowers and bound it together with a string of his own, in a. Manner, he fondly hopes, that will interest the reader and make it a not un worthy contribution to the thought-gemmed literary cairn.
