Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-awaited update and expansion of a widely recognised classic in the field by pioneering acoustics expert, Leo L. Beranek Builds upon Beranek's 1954 Acoustics classic by incorporating recent developments, practical formulas and methods for effective simulation Uniquely, provides the detailed acoustic fundamentals which enable better understanding of complex design parameters, measurement methods and data Brings together topics currently scattered across a variety of books and sources into one valuable reference Includes relevant case studies, real-world examples and solutions to bring the theory to life Acoustics: Sound Fields and Transducers is a modern expansion and re-working of Acoustics, the 1954 classic reference written by Leo L. Beranek. Updated throughout and focused on electroacoustics with the needs of a broad range of acoustics engineers and scientists in mind, this new book retains and expands on the detailed acoustical fundamentals included in the original whilst adding practical formulas and simulation methods for practising professionals. Benefitting from Beranek's lifetime experience as a leader in the field and co-author Tim Mellow's cutting-edge industry experience, Acoustics: Sound Fields and Transducers is a modern classic to keep close to hand in the lab, office and design studio. Book Synopsis Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals by : National Research Council
Download or read book Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-05-22 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the 119 species of marine mammals, as well as for some other aquatic animals, sound is the primary means of learning about the environment and of communicating, navigating, and foraging. The possibility that human-generated noise could harm marine mammals or significantly interfere with their normal activities is an issue of increasing concern. Noise and its potential impacts have been regulated since the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Public awareness of the issue escalated in 1990s when researchers began using high-intensity sound to measure ocean climate changes. More recently, the stranding of beaked whales in proximity to Navy sonar use has again put the issue in the spotlight. Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals reviews sources of noise in the ocean environment, what is known of the responses of marine mammals to acoustic disturbance, and what models exist for describing ocean noise and marine mammal responses. Recommendations are made for future data gathering efforts, studies of marine mammal behavior and physiology, and modeling efforts necessary to determine what the long- and short-term impacts of ocean noise on marine mammals.

Book Synopsis Signals, Sound, and Sensation by : William M. Hartmann
Download or read book Signals, Sound, and Sensation written by William M. Hartmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to follow an introductory text on psychoacoustics, this book takes readers through the mathematics of signal processing from its beginnings in the Fourier transform to advanced topics in modulation, dispersion relations, minimum phase systems, sampled data, and nonlinear distortion. While organised like an introductory engineering text on signals, the examples and exercises come from research on the perception of sound. A unique feature of this book is its consistent application of the Fourier transform, which unifies topics as diverse as cochlear filtering and digital recording. More than 250 exercises are included, many of them devoted to practical research in perception, while others explore surprising auditory illusions generated by special signals. Periodic signals, aperiodic signals, and noise -- along with their linear and nonlinear transformations -- are covered in detail. More advanced mathematical topics are treated in the appendices. A working knowledge of elementary calculus is the only prerequisite. Indispensable for researchers and advanced students in the psychology of auditory perception.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of principles, materials, and technologies Architectural Acoustics provides the vital information that architects, engineers, and all concerned with the built environment need to control and direct wanted or unwanted sounds within and around buildings. A team of internationally recognized experts presents the very latest information on acoustical materials, technologies, design criteria, and methods for a wide variety of applications, including airports and other transportation facilities; theaters, churches, and concert halls; classrooms, lecture halls, and libraries; music practice rooms and recording studios; sports venues; and all types of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. This comprehensive reference is one of the few books of its kind to include richly detailed case studies that demonstrate real-world applications of acoustic principles, materials, and methods. Nearly two hundred photos and illustrations further elucidate specific principles, applications, and techniques. Topics covered include: * Basic principles of architectural acoustics * Acoustical materials and methods * Building noise control applications

Book Synopsis Acoustics: Sound Fields, Transducers and Vibration by : Leo Beranek
Download or read book Acoustics: Sound Fields, Transducers and Vibration written by Leo Beranek and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustics: Sound Fields, Transducers and Vibration, Second Edition guides readers through the basics of sound fields, the laws governing sound generation, radiation, and propagation, and general terminology. Specific sections cover microphones (electromagnetic, electrostatic, and ribbon), earphones, and horns, loudspeaker enclosures, baffles and transmission lines, miniature applications (e.g. MEMS microphones and micro speakers in tablets and smart phones), sound in enclosures of all sizes, such as school rooms, offices, auditoriums and living rooms, and fluid-structure interaction. Numerical examples and summary charts are given throughout the text to make the material easily applicable to practical design. New to this edition: - A chapter on electrostatic loudspeakers - A chapter on vibrating surfaces (membranes, plates, and shells) Readers will find this to be a valuable resource for experimenters, acoustical consultants, and to those who anticipate being engineering designers of audio equipment. It will serve as both a text for students in engineering departments and as a valuable reference for practicing engineers. - Provides detailed acoustic fundamentals, enabling better understanding of complex design parameters, measurement methods and data - Extensive appendices cover frequency-response shapes for loudspeakers, mathematical formulas and conversion factors
